Seeking advice on future Rebel purchases

By hammerghast, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey guys,

Newish to the game, having a reasonable amount of fun though I feel like I'm in for more within the next $100 or so. That said, I'm in a weird spot. I have two Nebulons and Corvettes but from the core set, so no upgrades/titles that the standalone ones come with. I'm not seeing any pressing need for another of either ship, except to get those upgrades, so I'm assuming (wildly) that it'd be cheaper buying any cards you guys reccommend individually.

After that, or maybe instead, I want to buy 2 assault frigates. Would I get my use out of both, or would one do it for most (not all, I'm sure there are plenty of effective lists with 2) list building. Do they come with many upgrades the Nebs and Vettes could make much use of?

Come the next wave I'll be getting Home One and possibly 1-2 MC30's, would love any thoughts on whatever's been spoiled about them regarding what they're capable of.

I also am contemplating more fighter packs, two at most. I have one, plus two core sets of X-wings. Are you guys finding a use for more than two A-wings, B-wings or Y-wings at a time? Im sure that'll change come the increase of tournament sized games to 400 but I'll mostly confine the discussion to the here and now.

Thanks!

Definitely on the Assault Frigates, and fighter packs give you options, which is always nice.

Not sure how the MC30c is going to fare. I'm personally feeling it's a bit of a lightweight that's gonna have a hard time going toe-to-toe with ships like the Gladiator who will be jumping at the chance to get in close with it. One thing the MC30c might have though would be new, nice upgrade cards.

The Home-One is definitely a good ship to pick up, methinks. If for nothing else than because it's your faction's Large ship, and it's a beast.

The MC30 is going to be a game changer for the Rebels. It will allow us to play all sides of the fields play styles. I love it

I would get one of each of the wave 1 ships, just for the upgrades. I did double up on the fighters packs, but i restrained myself from buying 2 core boxes... At least so far.

I would ask why buy 2 core sets instead of just one plus the CR90 pack and the Neb pack?

Cheapest suggestion I have for you is to proxy things left, right, and center. Think you like that upgrade? Print out or handwrite what it does, play a few games with it with a buddy, and see if it fits your game style. There are a few cards here that are "Oh! That's cool!" when you read them but don't really work as you thought they would once they're on the table. Think you might want a few more A-Wings? Proxy a few X-Wings for now, see if it fits your game style. If you don't have the base size and/or the card, then borrow it from someone who has.

My approach with X-Wing and Armada is to buy one of each box, give it a go, and go from there. Because of this, I have two Gladiators for Armada and thinking of getting at least 1 more. Do I need any cards from the box? Nope, but flying 3 Gladiators was fun and I want to do that again (I borrowed the third Gladiator to test the fleet build). I've seen the XI7 laser from the Neb box and I've had it used against me a couple of games. I want to use it too and I have one. I'm thinking of getting a second one too. However, none of my fleet builds seems to allow me to fit two of these so I've not bought a second Neb yet.

In other words, what's cool and what you can use --- only you can answer that question. Go out there and test some builds!

The core sets allow you the extra damage deck which is always good to have.

Plus a maneuver tool that just goes to speed 2 or 3.

Mate, just get one of the Assault Frigates, you may find you want a second, then spend some time looking into the options you may not have and do like Intys Rule suggested and proxy a few games.

Take it all slow and buy into what you can as you can.

I never said i didn't want another core box, just that I have restrained myself.

The extra move tool, dice and damage cards would be nice. The extra fighters at this point would be modeling fodder, and if I ever run 3 Nebs at once, I may start questioning my own sanity. The core set is a lot to lay out to get those cards, as i can get the dice and move tool for 10-12 bucks.

I have 5 Nebulon-B's. . . I never run more than 2 but then again I have bought my things with the concept in mind of lending out models for others to try the game out

If you are cash strapped, I'd recommend the Assault Frigate as it really opens a lot of Rebel options up. From there, I'd say try proxying a few of the cards in the CR90/Neb B solo packages. With fighters viewed as slightly ineffective at this moment, I'd limit yourself to one pack to start, and you could always proxy those as well. The other option is Ebay as people on there do split the upgrade cards from the ships frequently. I don't watch there too much, but it may be a way to get the upgrades if you don't want the additional ships.

Plenty of our rebel players fly double assault frigates. The mix of fighters is fine, most of our best users have a mix in their force vs using large amounts of the same type.

I concur with anyone saying you want 2 AFs and especially with Wave 2 and 400 points you will always find room for them.

I concur also, a pair of whales is a fantastic backbone for any Rebel fleet. I almost got my rear end handed to me by two today, both with Intel Officer + XI7 Turbolasers,... they brought my VSD-II to half-hull on round 2! Scary monsters, those things. If you try one, you'll certainly want another.

A single fighter pack is OK to start with, you can proxy easily. But eventually you'll want two pairs of A-Wings :)

If you still have disposable funds after the AF2s, I'd buy a third CR90 and/or save the rest for MC30s.

Look on Ebay for the ship cards your missing or make some. I would pick up 2nd pack of fighters shop around they can be had for less then $15 each ( I got mine for $13.50 each)and get an assault frigate or two. I just got one for $26. the price for SWA ships fluctuate from day to day so don't buy to fast unless to see a ship for 30% off or more. I got 2 of each of the Nebulon Bs and Corvettes for $10.42 each by shopping around and keeping and eye on places. I also pre ordered 2 mc 30s and 1 Home One for 30% off.

Have fun and shop a round

I'd say you might want to go the ebay route for the frigate cards, but it's definately worth picking up another corvette or two, especially once wave II hits and the points limit goes up. 3-4 corvettes as flanker will be a force to be reckoned with

I recommend at least the nebulon b as the titles and upgrades are worth it and I only got 1 mkII as I plan on fielding other wave 2 stuff with it.

Great help all around, letting this all sink in. To clarify as a few people seem to misunderstand that I bought multiple core sets: I've simply split one on two occasions with a friend who has no interest in owning anything Rebel haha. Thanks guys!
