I got into X-Wing after watching a few Youtube videos from a father that was playing the game against his 9 year old son. I had gotten back into Magic the Gathering, and was teaching my 7 year old son how to play, but it was getting rather expensive to keep enough competitive decks for us to play. Decided on trying X-Wing and have not regretted the switch. I spend plenty of time looking through competitive builds, and bring these to the table for my son and I to try out. He has really starting to figure out how to fly the ships, but he still gets discouraged if the dice are not rolling his way. I bring him along to our LGS, and the group I play with allow us to fly as a team. It is quite fun, and I get the opportunity to discuss strategy with him. Hopefully, in just a few more months, I can set him up on his own to watch him take down some adults that are 5 times his age
Anyone else getting their kids involved?
Anyone play X-Wing with their kids?
I play with my 8 year old daughter. She has her own ships now. All rebels. Still very early learning for her. Her dice rolls are insane however. She's even better in Imperial Assault.
My son is nine. We have board game nights at least 2-3 times a week in our house. He wasn't into X-wing but loves Talisman, King of Tokyo, Rampage, Bang!, etc. The cool part is I have gotten a lot of his friends and families to become gamers as well. Most of them only had played games like Life, Uno, Monopoly. It's always great to see their reaction when you break out a modern board game and blow them away!
Edited by farrlinnNot son, but my 9 year old Nephew is all about X-Wing now. Amusingly, his strategy is the most difficult to play against because you literally do not know what he will do. He loves it, has a firm understanding of the rules and is working on strategy. He needs the odd reminder to use upgrades at times but is pretty solid.
We sometimes play Boss Monster together. Upon a friends recommendation I've picked up a copy of King of Tokyo for Christmas. I'm pretty sure I hold the prestigious title of 'Favourite Uncle' .. and all it took was a couple of games I like and the time together.
I play with my 12 year old sister. She's getting pretty good, her and I just beat our two cousin's today. She's getting really good at flying but I usually put the lists together and whatnot. We also play Settlers and other board games so she has a decent grasp of things.
I mostly play x-wing with my son. He is 12 now and has been playing it since wave 2. I got back into gaming for something for us to do together. His mam doesn't get so angry when he walks in the house with more X-wing or zombicide. (Just pretend you bought this... Wink wink).

Well played sir.
No, but that's because I don't have kids.
I am training up my nephews in the ways of the Force and need only wait a few more years before the eldest (five years old now) is ready.

Lol! My wife wife finally gave up asking "why I need so many board games!"
Been playing X-Wing a bit with my son (16), and it's been great fun.
My son will be 2 in December, so... not yet. Although I'm looking forward to it.
Unfunnily enough my only local player is 9 years old. It's good enough not to rust but for proper games I need to rejoin my buddies two hours away.
Still...now his dad has to start as well so I am hoping for another adult player.
My son started playing when he was 7 now he's 9 and we have a blast. He loves to play as the rebels. He remembers rules and card info better then me.
I've played a few times with my daughters but they're still pretty young for this game. But I have played it with my 12- and 11-year old nephews. We have a blast. They don't have a whole ton ships so they print out and proxy a lot of the upgrades, but we have a blast when we play. Unfortunately, my brother (who is a big Star Wars fan) isn't really into gaming so he hasn't played it with them to my knowledge. What a missed opportunity!
I've tried, but they just won't stay on the flight stands.
My two daughters are too young yet to try. The eldest hasn't turned two yet.
We'll see in the future ![]()

That earned a literal spit-take. Off to find a towel for my keyboard...
Edited by Vorpal SwordNot only do I play X-wing with my three kids, I don't play against anyone else. We have been playing for a year now and have quite a collection. We've tried other games, just didn't hold their attention. X-wing on the other hand has been a hit.
I duke it out with my 10 y/o son. He got the game for Christmas this past year and it's been a blast getting back into gaming after a long hiatus. We've tried to get my 13 y/o daughter (who is a big SW fan) to play but she gets bored quickly. My issue has been getting him to not dance and hoot and hollar when he does something spectacular . . . which is a bit more often than I'd like buwahahaha. Still, it's a lot of fun!
My oldest turns three this year, so only another 4-5 years to wait! He wants to play, and by play I mean throw dice. He is a Star Wars fan already, he can even identify Star Wars text. I am very proud.
I play X-wing with my 8 year old for the last 3 months. He is quite addicted to the game, and is developing a strategic thinking towards his moves. As another parent said, he is still getting frustrated from the results of the cubes sometimes, when luck and tactics need to be balanced. It is a nice addition to his star wars interest (LEGO etc) and as a parent I find him playing a game board instead of the X-Box alternative quite appealing. We are from Israel, and hence as a 3rd grader he does not talk English yet (just started learning), so I do need to read him all the cards descriptions which lengthens the prep time but verse us in the game more quickly and motivates him to do his English homework. I have learnt English when I was 6 due to my interest in computers, and maybe Star Wars will do the same for him.
One nice thing we do is "Bing" days during the vacations - we see the movies through the day and play the battles that we see on the screen.
This is not a cheap game to say the least (at least not here), and hence we position it as "Daddy's game" so bringing more ships won't create a ripple effect with his sisters and mom...(-:
To sum - if you are a geek dad, that's a great game to play with your kids, 7 and above.
