Just played seeds of heresy adventure and my group skipped everything

By Wurstbrotjoe, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

So I set the game up that the Faithful of the Harvest Father and the Sodality are Heretical. But my Group just went to the capitol and pulled their Inquisitional Badges out and went to the palace to get the Food off Novabella, which was corrupted by the Chaos created by the heretical Sodality.

So right now there are tithe ships on their way to pick up millions of tons of corrupted chaos food and spread it all over the Thule sub sector. Also there are some Rogue Psyker on the loose too.

Sooooooo I am looking for some advices to keep the plot going thought about maybe drop it for a bit and come later back to it. Want to teach them a bit about doing their jobs hehe. I.e. Chaos incursion or so.

Praised be the Harvest Father!

That is quite a problem. Especially difficult because you can't even have the heretics attack them really because they are playing right into the heretics plans. How familiar is your group with the setting and the point of the Inquisition because if they think their whole job is just getting the tithe going again then there seems to be a serious lack of understanding in their purpose and goals. If they lack understanding to this degree it may be worth an out of character discussion.

Did you read them the Harvest prelate's letter? What did their inquisitor tell them before they set off? How did they miss the point that they should be hunting heretics? You may need to do more to make them realize that something is not right. Describe things about the local church that seem suspicious, have people in the streets giving them dirty looks, maybe have enemies tailing them that they can notice, have some of the citizens be slightly mutated due to eating chaos tainted food (noticeable with some sort of awareness test), have them notice something when they go to eat some of the food themselves.

Easiest/ Most direct way to try to get them back on track would probably be for someone from the Kathrinkas family to meet with them and share some suspicions they have either about the other organizations and/or the status of the food.

Talked with the group. I think they know they are not finished yet. But they thought getting the tithe rolling again was the most important thing. So I think I will play out the rest and maybe they will have an "OH F$CK WE SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT!" and then let the tithe thing come back later.

The tithe is not the Inquisition's problem. That is the administratum's and arbites' job. The inquisition's job is dealing with heresy and actual direct threats to the imperium. They were sent to deal with growing darkness and corruption warned of by a high ranking priest not to act as tax collectors. At the very least they should further investigate why the tithes stopped.

Might want to remind them that one of the lines of the note says "Our world lives to provide its bounty to others, and should its offerings become tainted so would countless souls fall from the Emperor's Grace". This is practically straight saying "check the food dummies" :P

You should still place clues for them to find that could allow them to realize the food is tainted before it goes anywhere. They should have plenty of time to investigate before the food leaves the planet. It would likely still take months to get tithe ships organized and sent out to pick the food up, considering how slow the gears of the administratum turn and how slow and unreliable warp travel is.

You could also have them make logic tests and if anyone passes use it as an excuse to point out that reestablishing trade with a world that has been cut off for decades and has an unknown heretical threat may not be wise.

If they ignored all the clues and just left after the ships with the tithe are on their way, just drop hints of the tainted food (Novabella food packages, shipping papers, etc.) with the cults / mutant uprisings / chaos incursions they encounter in later adventures. If they make the connection: good for them, if not: just escalate it further until they notice.

A whole IG regiment turning to chaos worship after getting a big shipment of Novabella food is not easy to miss.

Have some of the tainted food end up on their plates. Them noticing it before or after they eat it is up to how cruel a GM you want to be.

I absolutely love this idea.

In Rogue Trader: Lure of the expanse there is a scene where the players can eat some warp eels and consequently a list of what might happen to the players, you should go check that out.

uuuuuuuh sounds nice. I will hint them in the right direction. The Chaos dinner is an awesome idea!

Did you mean "Very Hard (–30) Toughness Test or suffer a mutation (see Rogue Trader page 368). Success indicates 1d10 points of damage (not reduced for Toughness or Armour) instead. Navigators may generate a Navigator mutation instead (see Rogue Trader page 182)." when eating the eel?

I dont have the book at hand, but it sounds about right. Set the difficulty of the test depending on how strongly the food is polluted. :-)

You should be under no obligation to bail them out if they failed. Have them get picked back up, and asked to report about what they found.

"We didn't find anything, just got the tithes back up!"

... So what was the purpose of the Cardinal's letter?

"Uh, I'm not sure...."

They failed the mission, so punish them for it. Loss of Influence, berated by Interrogator, etc. Then get give them a boring mission like having to go get the Inquisitor's laundry, where they witness people eating food and spontaneously mutating. They kill them, look at the food, and find it is from Novabella...
