Flew the AFmkII for thebfirst time and...

By Stasy, in Star Wars: Armada

SWEET BABY JESUS THIS THING RULES!!!!

Blasphemy aside, it's what the doctor ordered for the Rebels. Did a play against myself, randomly drew Contested Outpost to play. Gave 1st to Imperials.

Rebels: (294)

AFmkII B w/ Adv Proj, Enhanced Arm, Exp Hang, and Dodonna

2x CR90 w/ Eng Team, Enhanced Arm, one was Jaina one was Tantive

Wedge, Dutch, Y Wing, X Wing

Empire: (297)

VSD II w/ Warlord and Screed

VSD II w/ Gunnery and XX9

GSD I w/ Demolisher, ACM, and Engine Techs

I held the station for two turns as the Rebels before the Empire forced me out. They paid dearly early when Demolisher thought he was the man and got ahead of the VSD's. Two Structural Damage crits from the Fighters just piled the damage on and he was toast by Turn 3.

Almost lost Jaina's but she got out of range after taking a beating. Then nearly ran out of room to turn her around. Got the non flagship VSD on the way out of town. I'm pretty sure resulting from the fighter bombardment post softening from the fleet.

Ultimately I won without losing a single ship, only the 2nd time I've managed to. Unfortunately the AF carrier ran out of range, as did the remainder of the fleet. Leading to a 6th round of AA fire and only one Y Wing getting a shot. I think the MoV was 158 points.

I'll add more photos as Photobucket allows. Being a real jerk right now.

My takeaway from this is that the space potato whale is pretty impressive. Run it with AP and watch your opponent hate having to strip through every. Single. Shield. Works nice as a carrier as well. I want to love the Neb B, but I've yet to have success feel so natural as the game progresses. That being said, I had some real hot die rolls. I think that's important for people to remember. One slightly worse roll from a fighter or a ship and that GSD got one more turn to lob a ton of black die into the frigate. Could have been a lot different.

Awesome typo in the title... D'oh!!!

Best ship currently in the game, imo.

Great report, ship and play area! Frogs, Whales, or Guppies are a fantastic ship.

Yea, I was really down on rebels til I used it a few games ago. It's pretty amazing. I now see why people use double whale lists all the time. It has so much to offer, and won't die from a single volley (I'm looking at you NEB B you frustrating stickbug thing!!).

EDIT: Everytime I take a Neb B in my list I think, "Ok, this will be the last time." It's like a terrible addiction I keep getting sucked into!

Ran another self game. Hyperspace Assault with the same Rebel fleet and I changed the Imperial fleet to add in a Rhymer ball. Despite losing, it was close. 25 pts MoV. Very impressed with the build around the Whale.

If I had a 2nd GSD, the results may have been different.

I can't get over the look of that ugly sucker, so I'll just keep running my double NebB double CR90 and squadron list until Home One launches.

Just get a MkII and replace the model with a MkI?

It was always the negative space in the back of the space potato that I disliked.

That's why I flip all the their tails upwards.

Think FFG will ever release an MKI for Armada?

And personally I don't see anything wrong with the looks of the AFMKII just puzzled that it has speed 3 with one engine????

The MKI is on the art of a few cards in the game (Adar Tallon's card, I think). That's usually FFG's way of teasing future waves. I have high hopes that it will be released.

What colour are the engines supposed to be? The model is orange, however the card art is blue.

I hated the look of the AFmkII at first, but now I've come to love it. It's a weird design but it's definitely grown on me.

Functionally it's great for the Rebels, and provides a ship that doesn't shatter in a stiff breeze. I haven't run two of these yet (not sure why, actually...) but I imagine it would add some much needed survivability to the Rebel fleet.

And that's the great things about opinions, yours that it looks fine is just as valid as mine that it looks horrible.

I've seriously considered getting a MK1 and just swapping out the pregnant guppy model with it, and I might still yet, but I'm in that weird convergence of Home One is coming eventually and FFG might release their own MK1 and my wallet is empty. So for now, I'll just wait and save.

Assault frigate (mk2) is best frigate

The Afmkii is imo the most flexible (even with command 3) and forgiving ship in the game atm. Strong, wide side arcs and decent nav chart make it perhaps the easiest ship to position a, unlike the cr-90, it has the defensive profile to withstand firepower at every range (just doesn't like close range versus ACM GSDs, but not even ACM GSDs like ACM GSDs)

I´m on the same boat as you. What builds (2xNeb, 2xCR90) do you find the most successful?

I have been thinking about adding aaround 3/8 to 1/2 an inch to the middle and mount the tail /engine on that.also adding a dorsal pod/fin and make it look more like a shark ;)

I run one of each model (CR90 A&B, NebB Support & Escort) with the titles (Jania's light and Dodonna, Tantive & Leia, Yavaris, Salvation & X17 turbolaser), with generic squadrons (2x A's & B's, and an X). Tantive flanks, stays close enough to give dial or tokens, and tries to close to get all those blue dice to bear. Jania screens behind the NebB's looking for a shot with its red dice or goes objective hunting. Yavaris herds the B's and X along, Sal angles for a shot, the A's try to intercept enemy squads or prepares for an assault run.

I don't win every skirmish, but I do okay.
