Game over for EU?

By patox, in X-Wing

I wouldn't call them EU ships as more of special edition ships since they were added in The Empire Strikes Back.

EU ships would be more of those which did not have characters in the OT. So these ships would be EU

  • TIE Defender
  • TIE Phantom,
  • E-wing
  • Z-95 Headhunter
  • HWK-290
  • YT-2400
  • MA-3 Scyk
  • VT-49 Decimator
  • MA-3 Scyk
  • Star Viper
  • Kihrax Fighter
  • K-wing
  • TIE Punisher/Interdictor
  • Raider Corvette

Those ships are EU

As for Rebel ships such as Ghost/Phantom and the TIE Advanced Prototype Well just call them Rebel ships.

Everything else in X-wing is OT in one way or another, but yeah the OT has been thoroughly exhausted for source material for X-wing.

Good thing we have about a dozen NEW STAR WARS Films coming... all New-OT!

Don't forget the prequels :P

 gosh, that's a horrible thought :(

VII-IX are by definition NOT part of the OT, thank you very much.

I know many don't agree with me. But I remain adamant that ffg should tap into the 3 Canon movies that are already in existence. There's a lot of new play styles that could be utilized, most notably droid fighters.

Shush... afore you start a lot of troubles!

I do LOVE the Jedi & Sith ships, and that Arc is cool. But yeah **** the stink-quills.

:D

No I doubt they are done with the EU... I would love it if out of all the new stuff coming out they pulled ships we already have in game and made them cannon somehow...

As a die hard rebel player, I just can't get past the TIE defender, how smooth, how sleek, how imperial it looks. The TIE phantom as well to a lesser extent.

Anyway, back on subject, I think we will still see the TIE Avenger, and the Missile gunboat as well(For imperials). Maybe the TIE/D (No not the defender!) automated starfighter as well (Imperial brobot swarm is a phrase that makes me shudder, but it also sounds kind of cool). For Rebels, maybe the T-wing?(could also serve as a scum ship); and the Jade's fire now that we have nice new docking and undocking mechanics in the works. I have no idea what would make a good dedicated scum ship, except for the Wild Karrde as an epic ship.

**** dat wild-card...

But yeah bring on all of that Imperial Glory you spotlighted.

At first I was strongly opposed to the idea of bringing ships from the new movies into the X Wing game. I still am, but I was at first as well.

Ah, it's not that bad I guess. I'm only really interested in the OT ships and a handful of others, and I think X Wing should deal SOLELY with the Galactic Civil War. That is, nothing that happened after Endor. In fact, with the new canon and the invalidation of the EU, I'd like to see FFG stop producing any EU content. Canon only, please. But having said all that I respect the right for other people to buy the wierd and cooky looking ships they want (Wave 7! I'm looking at you!) and when I have to play against them I can just rationalise them as hypothetical/theoretical training exercises.

I'll be honest though, I don't think constantly adding more and more ships to the game is necessarily a good thing. Sometimes you just have to put a full stop after something and say "We're done, this is finished now".

For some reason I thought this thread was going to be about the economy of Greece.

As for the EU, there are ships I would still like to see. So many games were so very good. Since we get YT everything give me an Otana.

I'll be honest though, I don't think constantly adding more and more ships to the game is necessarily a good thing. Sometimes you just have to put a full stop after something and say "We're done, this is finished now".

Except, that isn't what is going to happen. The license is too expensive to not milk it. What will happen, is that they will end it. And then the 2.0 game will be released. I'm not entirely sure what the issue with a game contininuing to evolve, as long as balance is maintained.

The licence doesn't need to be exclusively pumped into X Wing 1.0 though. As you say, a 2.0 is inevitable. Much like we have lots of different wargames dealing with different periods of history, we could have different games from FFG to cover the different periods in Star Wars history.

My issues with constant releases are that on the one hand it dilutes the brand. Already we have tables packed with ships that are unrecognisable as 'Star Wars', and we're only up to wave 7. And on the other hand, the more units you add to a game the more difficult it becomes to simultaneously make them interesting and balance them. FFG have done an... ok job with balancing things so far. But they've already had to revisit several units to buff/nerf them. Adding another 30 ships to the mix won't help things.

No way is the last 30 years or so of Expanded Universe material dead just because some business suites say so...and why anyway? Just so some talent-less hack director/script writers can make up what ever BS they want?

I am more than well aware that Star Wars is a mess due to Lucas' policy of "Give me money,do what you want"

So yeah I realise that some stuff needs to be culled but that needs to be a case by case bases not this blanket "EU is gone" BS

Well, it will be decided on a case by case basis. As the story arc people at disney come to each case, they'll either add it back into the canon or leave languishing with a 'legends' status.

But as it stands, all the old EU is basically just fanfic now.

And I highly doubt that X-wing will cause continuity issues.

Just you wait...

It's considered Legends continuity iirc, so basically alt universe?

VII-IX are by definition NOT part of the OT, thank you very much.

True. given that the O is short for 'Original'. So what do we call the New Trilogy .. NT?

But what if they decide to make Episode X-XII .. then they'll be the NT and the old NT becomes the NSNT (Not So New Trilogy). And those OOSAFTFTOT (One Off Stand Alone Films That Form Their Own Trilogy), what do we call them?

Oh, this is so confusing.

Yeah! Who's this "Lawrence Kasdan" guy, anyway? Exactly what part of his resume does he think qualifies him to write a Star Wars movie?

^Keep in mind Kasdan's done like 3 things in the last 20 years, though, and I don't trust Disney not to meddle.

Well, Kathleen Kennedy was able to get the film pushed back to Dec, instead of May this year, like Bob Iger wanted. I am more than confident in LFL being run by Kathleen Kennedy. Just look at what she has been involved in. She knows her stuff.

And I do have to laugh about the worry about the board being filled with a bunch of unrecognizable EU ships. It may not be a ship you want. But someone, somewhere is likely to love that obscure ship. Just because it isn't in a movie, or a ship you like, doesn't mean it doesn't belong in the game. Besides, FFG miniature wizardry has yet to fail. Even minis that you would think look ugly are just amazing minis.

For some reason I thought this thread was going to be about the economy of Greece.

Well, you see...

Some body in Greece was playing a computer RPG and his character was Dash, but he decided to make Dash a minority woman instead. Then their economy collapsed and he couldn't get the x-wing cards he needed.

So the PC PC PC had problems with the EU EU in the EU.

I've got A-wings, Y-wings, TIE Fighters, Interceptors and Advanced so I'm happy.

With the exception of the HWK-290 the ships sourced from outside of the films mean nothing to me. They're a bonus if I like them and no big deal if I don't.

In regards to the original post, without knowing how many ships are coming from the new movies and how frequently FFG wants to pump out ships it's hard to say how many waves the movies will be able to supply. Probably not enough so we'll maybe see more EU ships feeding Scum and Villainy at least.

While I'm not invested in the EU ships, I'd like to see the Dunelizard, Krayt and Kimogila just because they go with the Scyk and I like the idea of running them with a Mandolorian Merc.

Thanks godness, no more ugly ships.

Oh, I wouldn't say that. Lucas and Disney are perfectly competent to make ugly ships. The question is: will they be pretty ugly or ugly ugly?

Yeah. Its not like the Y-wing and Falcon aren't exactly pretty ships, both are quite ugly tbh but I love em all the same.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Has someone behind the scenes actually SAID that is a YT-2400? It certainly could be, but all the picture is is a flatish blur with a glowing blue blur behind it.
