Best Species for Primitive Force Sensitive Witch Docor or Shaman type?

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, what is the most fitting species for a force-using witch doctor character?
The Wookiee on the Survivalist specialization deck looks very cool and primitive, with war paint and what not. I could picture him with a cool looking animal or bird skull on his or her head!..

Would the wookiee or any other species you can think of be the right fit for a force witch in the Rebel Era, where the Jedi Force Tradition is all but dead and faded?...

Based on the species that are available in the current books, the one species that I would personally go with would be the Mirialans; they are a rather religious species, who hold a somewhat primitive understand of the Force (going as far to consider it fate).

You can find more about them in the Force and Destiny book on p.58.

Though many other species could fit the bill, these would just be my personal choice.

Felucians.

Ewok...

Dressellians (sic?) are pretty low-tech, as I recall.

Might I suggest a Dathomirian female, al-la Mother Talzin? They are largely primitive, though they do have access to some advanced technologies, and use dark magicks that are in fact a facet of the Dark Side of the Force.

Nice! Force Witches and Nightsisters are very cool. The next game gm woun`t let me play female, but maybe next time. And the witch doctor character idea really fits much better for a FnD game, and the game after the one I`m running now will have an EotE focus too. I think I`ll go for an harpoon-wielding herglic trader/big game hunter for that one.. And after that my brother might be running his first game in AoR and I was thinking of a failed clone(ala 99 from CW) mechanic/force sensitive emergent for that one or just Rodian Rambo.. We`ll see.

Why not let you play female?

Why not let you play female?

Good question.. It`s not like I wanted to play an insultingly sexualized, male chauvinistic version of a woman. The female characters I would like to play are just female because that`s how I picture that character and idea.

I could see myself playing an ugly, old witch in Discworld, Dragonborn Hermoine in DnD and female Wookiee warrior type or witch-doctor in SW. I could get it if I wanted to play Lara Croft or Twi`lek slave girl, but ban on all female characters is weird. I guess it`s about expectations and references.

I used to be against it in my group too, because of the gm in a podcast I heard didn`t let people play opposite gender because of stereotypical and insulting interpretations based on misconceptions and/or insensitivity.

I got that. But then someone played a huge and hairy, scary wolf girl wizard student in a short Hogwarts game I ran and it was fine. Since then I have both played an old lady in Call of Cthulhu and ran games with more oppsite sex characters and none of them were insulting and embarassing.

Whipheads?

Whipheads?

Whiphid? Good idea:)

If non-book races are acceptable, Talz might be a good option. Talz are (mechanically) pretty much cold-adapted wookiees without the rage. Plus they're relatively uncommon in the galaxy, and come from a fairly primitive culture. Ithorian would be a good alternative as well; their technology is more advanced, but very naturalistic.

Was the podcast "Critical Hit"?

The GM on that podcast has the same philosophy and I largely disagree with it.

Yes, it was Rodrigo...

Hutt...not primitive heck only one known in the EU to be force sensitive but I have giggly thoughts of a light saber wielding lard butt :P

But in all honesty there are som good suggestions out there already ive always had a love for togruta force sensitive characters.

A player in my group made a Torgarian nomad style character. He portrays his space lion as a Native American who often mistakes his force sensitivity with "connection" to nature.

I RP a Female character in the group I play in. I can't deny I might play her a little insensitively, But i wanted a Black Widow style character that exploits her sexuality, partially in resentment of her slave dancer background. It's a good time.

Yeah, that GM is wrong. While some players should definitely be reigned in, I would never assume I know all about my players' gender identity so that I can make the judgment call that they cannot play a particular gender at my table. Nor should they have to explain themselves to me.

RPGs are about wish fulfillment. What is so terrible about wanting to play a sexy woman? In my experience, after the first few sessions a stereotypical, broad strokes character often becomes more nuanced anyway, so I'm not that worried about stereotypes. Usually the other players do a pretty good job of stopping the most offensive stuff.

I am going to confess something.

I have always have found it difficult to have people roleplay someone of a different gender. No idea why since I think in real life gender identity is a non-issue in so far that I think that everyone should do and feel as they please in order to be happiest they can be...

I would never forbid it at my table of course but I did find it difficult to run such games in the past while at the same time I had no problem with people playing Wookies or R2 units... ****, I still have a long road ahead me, I just realized.
