Placement of Asteroids/Obstacles in EPIC

By tSel, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

First of all, please excuse my english and phrasing as it is not my native language.

I've tried to search for an answer to my question but I can't seem to find out what's right or wrong.

In the set up phase, we place 12 asteroid tokens on the table. I've interpreted the tournament rules as following; The player with initiative start by placing two tokens on the board within range 1 of each other, but not within range 1-2 of any player edge. Then the other player places his first two tokens, and so on until all asteroids have been placed.

The problem is that every other place I've read about asteroid placement it states that no asteroid is to be placed within range 1-2 of any edge. The new Epic torunament rules doesn't mention this. I'm a bit confused.

So in a friendly Epic 500 pts. match, we've agreed on following the tournament rules to keep it consistent, what applies; (assume that two tokens are placed within range 1 of each other when setting this up)

1. Asteroids can not be placed within range 1-2 of any edge, and not within range 1-2 of any other asteroids.

2. Asteroids can not be placed within range 1-2 of any player edge, but feel free to put them anywhere else on the board - as long as they are not within range 1-2 of any other asteroids.

Your thoughts on this?

Thanks!

It's really difficult to say with Epic at the moment.

FFG haven't really paid a great deal of attention to it so the rules and their updates have been a bit uneven to say the least - this could be a proof reading error that has survived since the earliest iteration of the Epic Tournament Rules that I've got ( V1.1 ) or it could be intentional*

Rules as written are clear

12 Obstacles are used in total on a 1828 x 914 playing area

Obstacles are placed 2 at a time by each player in an alternating fashion, starting with the player with initiative.

Only Asteroid tokens are mentioned - No mention of Debris so it's not permitted - odd considering the obstacle tokens in the Raider are treated as debris

Obstacles may not be placed closer than R2 of any player edge

Obstacles may not be placed closer than R1 of each other

No mention of any restrictions of placement near neutral edges, so they can be placed as close as you like to a neutral edge

* my guess is that it is intentional - even on a 1828x914 board things can get pretty crowded with 12 obstacle tokens - especially with a few Huge ships in play- removing the placement restriction on neutral edges frees up extra space for Huge ships to maneuver
