Painted Minis by a First-Time Cheap Painter

By Boba Rick, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Wow! Love the snow troopers! I hope mine look half as good!

Thanks! As a big-time-major novice, I tried something that was very different for me. They were easy. I primed them white, then put a couple coats of matte white on them, then painted the armor glossy white. Then, I put a dark wash over the fabric parts (watch the head, part of it is armor part is fabric), with maybe a little bit on the armor - but not much. Then, I made a white wash and put it over the whole figure, then final clear coat.

I make my own dark wash by using black paint, some distilled water, and a little bit of acrylic floor polish (I think it's called pledge). I did the same thing with the white wash, only I put white paint in and made it more concentrated. I did this same process with the wampas.

I have no doubt there are better ways for more skilled painters, but this is the best I could do with my skill level and time. I really like them.

Dude, these are so much better then what I can do right now! Very beautiful! Although I am having an issue with how shiny they are, makes them look like the old star wars action figures instead of minis pieces lol Other then that great job!

Thanks!

Some others have mentioned the shine as well. Personally, I like the glossy look over matte. They don't look as glossy on the table as they do in the pictures. Also, some of my first figures I dry-brushed with a metallic that was unfortunately a little glittery - I never even noticed it until I saw the pictures!

You could go for the middle road and apply a Satin varnish to your models. It won't break the bank, but it will protect your paintjob and dull the shine a little bit down. Great job so far ;)

Shucks, I forgot to paint the Imperial logo on his shoulder. I got a 2x2 game tomorrow and I was in a hurry.
