I've been playing Fleet Ambush wrong. Have you?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

As I was working on a homebrew objective system, and borrowing language from the objective cards, I noticed something:

On the Fleet Ambush card, it reads the following:

"The portion of the setup area that is beyond distance 5 of any edge of the setup area is the Ambush Zone. Players mark the corners of the ambush zone with objective tokens." (emph added.)

For months now, I've been treating that as if it was the play area (the whole 3x6), rather than the setup area (the 3x4 in the middle of the 3x6). This has made that Ambush Zone much wider than the rules intended. And, I don't play alone, so all my compatriots have been doing it wrong too.

Have any of you been making the same mistake?

nope. that's where those corner pieces in your core set come in handy. to remind you that you can't set up beyond those.

Yes, I've been using those all along. Except that instead of doing the range ruler twice from each side, I've been doing it just once from each side, making that ambush zone much bigger.

Nope :P

A picture is worth 1,000 words me thinks. :D

Wow, nice catch! My local group has been playing this wrong also, measuring distance 5 from table edges instead  .

Funnier still, we found out over the weekend that either none of us can read, or that we are still clinging to the X-wing rule set, as we were having player 1 set the first obstacle.

Wow. Yep, I've been doing that wrong. This definitely would have made a difference when I played against that Vic Vic Glad Screed list and he chose my fleet bush objective and the game began with a Vic and a glad being shoved right down my throat. Good catch!

Great catch Mikael. We have been playing it wrong. . . I think it is because the set up area for 180 points was the length of the play area.

On a side note. . . I think something is wrong here. . . If it is distance 5 from the setup area and the setup area is already distance 3.. . Distance 3 is about 7" (a bit more I know) and the range ruler is 12" so 19"+ from each side is 38"+ which is wider than the 36" of the play area. ..

Hmmm that means the Ambush zone is 2 feet wide but in the negative for its height. . . Hmmmmm

I think I am confusing the deployment zone borders with the set up areas edges. . . . If so the a Fleet Ambush for 300 points and 400 points is 2 feet wide by 1 foot tall. . .

yep, must deploy ambushed ships distance 5 from either player table edge but still not in the side area that are off limits for all missions. however squadrons can deploy closer to their edge, had one game when i pushed galant haven up as far as i could and deployed my fighters engaged with his before turn one even started haha

I second. A picture would definitely be helpful, as I'm having a hard time conceptionalizing what this would look like. I think it's a 2' wide by 1' deep rectangle in the very middle of the board, which would definitely be smaller than what we've been playing previously.

Good catch, in any case. :-) Out of curiosity, did anyone at GenCon get a judge's ruling on this scenario set-up?

As per OP, the distance 5 is measured from the edge of the setup area, not the players' table edges. Makes it a much smaller area

Hmmm...if I am not mistaken, the Setup Area is the 3 X 4 area. Indeed, the Ambush Zone is the 1 X 2 area. Not sure what all the confusion is about.

Distance 5 away from either short edge of the setup zone (3x4), and distance 5 from both long table edges. Making a 1x2 ambush zone. Essentially you are forcing half the enemy ships into the dead center of the table.

Nope, been doing it right. Caught myself the second time I played it.

Oh poop. I've only been measuring distance 5 from the long edges...
