I am sad.

By UnfairBanana, in X-Wing

I feel for ya, Krynn. We've had multiple occasions where my FLGS owner has "reserved" table space for us and then it...wasn't there. FNM draws the MTG crowd every friday, various other TCGs on pretty much every other day. Tuesday was going to be our day. But nope!

So, there's really no local scene. I literally ran into two people who played (They had ships in their hand as we were crossing the street, and I got their contact info) but...let's just say they couldn't fly casual. So, it's been me and my old roommate for the last two years.

I understand mtg is the milk and butter for these small stores, but it is frustrating when you spend a lot of money at a store and feel as though your business goes unappreciated

Like I said earlier I have my cousin and friend who play

I play with my buddy more than my cousin.

He and I went to regionals together and he is a good player. It's just too bad I think he's less interested in the game as of lately.

I'm going to keep trying to find players though.

I'm just extremely happy there is vassal.

It's not the same as using the real pieces but last night I played on vassal, and my opponent was good, and very nice

Hopefully get to play him and many others some more

The retailer was, from my understanding, in a bad situation. Someone wasnt going to get it. Perhaps the other people pre-ordered as well? The post said that the order was short-shipped and that Inwas the one who didnt get it. This implies that the others were paid for. The store credit, earned from a store championship, was not lost. Instead, the player will have to wait.

We don't have the whole story. Who do you piss off and offer the refund to? The person with store credt, who will get it later, effectively for free, or the person who pit down cash that will come out of the till at the wnd of the day? Sometimes a choice has to be made.

My post was mainly in response to the comment by Skargoth of "refund please". It was store credit, from a tournament. The credit won't go away, and the player, sadly, has to wait.

My post was also trying to point out seeing the point of view of both parties.

I too am sad

Partly because I missed a good deal on a raider and still don't have it, and second, probably nobody to play with once I get it :(

This is even worse than my OP. I would totally play with you, but I'm betting you're nowhere even remotely close.

Probably not unfortunately :(

I'm located P.E.I small province eastern Canada.

I've actually been feeling down as of late

Yesterday was my first game in two weeks, and it was on vassal (thank the Lord or muon and others for that lol)

Well I've been trying to get groups going Since summer of 2014. (I started playing Feb 2014)

The first lgs was extremely small two games took up most of the space. Best I've had was 4-5 people one night.

But whenever I try go go there if I didn't get there early it fill up with magic players and netrunner (but mostly magic)

I got frustrated when the store owner didn't seem to even try to promote it. Though he kept saying he would

Magic the gathering seems like it's all he cares about as every second weekend there is tournaments.

What really got me was I spent a lot there on xwing and other things.

And eventually it got to the point I'd drive in and nobody would show...at least for xwing.

So I stopped going there.

Then a new store opened, and the owner seemed very enthusiastic about xwing. Great I thought and it went well.

Second week we had 6 players. Better success in two weeks vs few months.

Was going great for awhile.

Wave 6 came out and he had I think 9 of everything come in and sold out in two days.

People were excited about doing tournaments and epic play.

Two tournaments later literally over night people stopped playing.

Some disappeared and was months before even saw them again

Others started selling off stuff saying they only wanted to keep certian squads.

Then armada came out and the store owner was now so enthusiastic about that. Going from xwing was his favorite game to armada being his favorite and of coarse others followed.

I asked if he would at least get a summer kit in for me and I'd cover the cost.

Sounded like he would.

Then when it was announced I asked again and he said he was asked by the distributor if he wanted it and he said no.

Then a big rant on how we wasn't going to buy ffg products or any of their kits because he was "sick of jumping through their hoops"

I mentioned why wouldn't you have just gotten me to do the things (apparently you have to fill out form and fax it to them etc and he didn't like that, which I would have done and paid him for the kit)

Plus everyone bought into armada and my cousin was asking when he was going to get the next wave and he said he wasn't ordering any unless you pay upfront.

Well that kind of turned us away.

Again spent a lot of money and we didn't like his attitude.

So basically I've mostly had two people to play with (my cousin and a friend who been playing same time as I have) but when I ask them for a game it seems like they make an excuse like stuff isn't organized or something else.

I'm afraid nobody around here has any interest in it other than me. Which is a shame because I'd rather do this over play ps4 or whatever in my spare time

(I don't game until kids are in bed. Oldest is almost 5 hoping to maybe get him into it when he gets little older lol)

There are couple others, but our schedules conflict as well, but they don't really care if they play or not.

Actually been kind of bringing me down lately as it is the one thing I enjoy doing in my spare time (which I don't get much of)

When I read about peoples game nights I really wish I had that hear.

The closet place is about hour and half drive and to get there have to cross the confederation bridge which costs 45 bucks (PEI is an island and bride connect to mainland)

I have traveled off island for tournament and the guys and community they have is great and I still talk to some almost on a daily basis.

I just really wish people here were interested, but it doesnt seem like it.

Magic is the flavor over here, and it's one game I can't stand.

I've tried posting on gameboardgeek message boards, the section on here and searched Facebook (wife account. I hate Facebook but that's how hard I've been looking)

Sorry for the long post, kind of feel lite better getting that out, but I'm still sad

I was in Charlottetown last month, visiting my wife's family. I was dying to play X-Wing. We should play the next time I'm up there!

Nope :( It's $105 CAD before taxes where I live, which is a completely nuts price. I picked this month to set a firm gaming budget and I'm trying to stick to it. We'll see how long it lasts. It's a bit easier because I play Rebel...

I went to my FLGS to pick up a Raider. The only one they had, they were holding for someone. The guy asked if they had any more at their other store, and he said they just sold one to a guy who doesn't even play.

I get that it's pretty. But curse you! I at least needed the TIE Advanced stuff!

To quote a Sith Lord:

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Everyone else enjoying theirs so far?

I too am sad

Why didn't you pre-order one at your store? Heck, most stores in my area weren't even requiring deposits, just putting names on a list.

That said, it's worth the wait! I went to GENCON, and no small part of the decision making was that I would be able to get a Raider and Wave 7 stuff while I was there.

It was very nice to be the first person in my area to not only get a Raider, but to play it in Epic!

The retailer was, from my understanding, in a bad situation. Someone wasnt going to get it. Perhaps the other people pre-ordered as well? Why did he preorder if not to get the first shipment? I'd ask for a refund and the owner can either talk to his supplier to complain or "make it right" in another way.

Neither scenario is acceptable behavior. Neither scenario is supported by the original account unless you're looking for something to be offended by.

You may not understand how "store credit from a Store Championship" works.

It costs X+Y+Z dollars to enter a Store Championship, where X is the owner's cost, Y was the owner's compensation for time and effort in hosting (in this case just space, as our local community ran the tournament), and Z was extra for prize support. I won the prize support, so Z is mine. But all of X+Y+Z went to the owner back in January.

I informed him then that I'd be using mine for a Raider, but he's not going to remember that, I know that, so six weeks ago I called and made sure he had a preorder for me. Three weeks ago I called again. His exact words, "You're all set." Last week I called one final time, to both remind him and let him know they were shipping. Still "all set."

Then he sends me an email that he got shorted one Raider, and I'm the one that has to wait.

So, in case it's not clear, I won the money (Z, above, in the form of store credit), and the store owner has had it since January.

This was a lame move by the store owner. I don't think he's a bad guy, exactly; I almost never go to his store because he's pretty far away. I get that he wants to keep frequent customers happy. But he's had my money for months, I preordered long before anyone else, and he decided to short me because ... what am I going to do? Ask another store to give me the Raider this guy owes me?

It was a lame move, and once I get all my store credit cashed, I'm not going back to that store, and I'll stop calling it "that store" and let the local community know exactly who did what and why.

I'm located P.E.I small province eastern Canada.

At least it's not New Brunswick.

At least new Brunswick has a community there.

I kmow the crowd in moncton and they are a great bunch.

There were a few different stores there that had store championship, and the regionals Was in Fredericton.

PEI is a nice place to raise a family, but everything else here is piss poor

Oh come on! I get to make fun of the second most obscure Canadian Province without pushback. That's how this is supposed to work! I literally have friends from there who sometimes forget the existence of their home Province!

(Mental note: Even Manitoba has it's defenders.)

Anyway: It does sound like you're having a frustrating time. And that does suck. I hope things can get sorted out for you.

The community round here is run by a bunch of extremely cliquey insular people that make no effort to be friendly.

I know of one guy that brought 2 raiders. He spends insane amounts. Does he play? Barely see him take any interest; presumably he has a private group or he's a collector...of components for a game that's meant to be played.

Why put up with that? Life's too short.

My collection's just gathering dust.

What's saddest of all is these people will pretend to a community but if you listen to them discuss buying used all talk of community and camaraderie goes out the window and it's dog eat dog.

It's a new obstacle: catrops!

My local FLGS has some in stock and selling at £60 too, sadly I don't play Imperial enough to make it worth buying one but that's a pretty good deal :)

Assuming the 60 pounds is something you can afford, the model itself is freaking _gorgeous_, and may be a nice display piece. And it might inspire a visiting friend to play Imperials that afternoon. ;)

Obviously, again, finances depending.

You opened with the classic sarcastic "how dare a business..." That's not asking for a balanced view, that's very distinctly taking a side.

What you do in that situation is go first come first served and if everyone tries to pick up their preorder before you can get them in explain the situation to whoever is last. What you don't do is look at how you can maximise profits by choosing the optimal preorderer to back out on and withold their preorder so you can give it to somebody who hasn't paid yet.

The person who preordered on store credit is within full rights to cancel their preorder and buy it at reduced price from the internet.

I wish the game was a little more mainstream.

Some places (bigger cities) seems there are plenty of places to find, but smaller, rural places it's hit or miss.

Like here for example. PEI has a population of about 140k. That's the entire province.

Magic is popular here like it is everywhere else. But table top miniature in general is a hard thing to get into.

There are some i hear who play Warhammer, and I have a friend who plays war machine, but it's usually just 2 or 3 people, and it takes place in someone house/basement.

Try going to the local store and you just get pushed out by the magic players. Also doesn't help the store owner doesn't try to put the word out a little more.

And the other store owner went from lovin xwing to lovin armada.

It was frustrating there at times because the store owner attitude was like "if you fly whatever Krynn007 flies you'll win" because I've won tournaments Herr and away. Doesn't work like that.

He'd also have a fit and forfeit a game the moment Han landed on a rock. Then went on about how he ended up hating Warhammer because of not fully understanding the rules and players took advantage of that. Which I've told him xwing community is great all around it seems.

Last I saw they played armada, but with their own interpretation of the rules, and when my cousin or myself tru to correct them, well you'd have better luck talking to the table.

Seems like they wanted to play it there way, and not the correct way.

Don't think anyone flying rebels won a game yet as the way it's being played is very favorable for the Imps

I'm just very frustrated.

This is a game I enjoy playing. In what little spare time I have for myself, I'd do this if I could. Would love to have a store where there are others who share the same interests and is as passionate about this game as I am.

As mentioned earlier the two I use to regularly play with were pretty passionate but don't seem so much any more.

Maybe things will change here, but I doubt it

i considered trading for Armada, but that's bombed locally - despite people such as the aforementioned spending insane money on stuff for it. I don't really understand people like that at all, if he doesn't play the game i think that's nuts. Still it's his money, who am i to tell people how to spend their hard earned?

It's all so ridiculous. The community here is a complete joke.

You might think I'm ridiculous for spending all this money on X-wing and Armada when I only play with my girlfriend at home. We have 2-3 games a week, and I have never played at a store. Do you think that's a waste of money? Personally, I don't, but I can see it from both sides.

You're playing the game though, that's the whole point.

People who buy up stock just to have something to put on their shelves make me sad.

Don't get me wrong the person in question is a nice guy. It just makes no sense to me, buying up stock for what is intended as a game that doesn't get used strikes me as utterly bonkers.
