X Wing Masters Tournament

By atkrull, in X-Wing

My wishlist for what I would like to see in X Wing:

It's called the X Wing Masters. It will take place after Worlds and before the Store Championship season begins. It is an exclusive tournament with only Regional winners, National winners, and the Worlds Champion able to attend. It is a two day tournament, with the best of the best going head to head. It would be professionally filmed (think Magic the Gathering Pro Tour top 8 quality) and broadcast over Twitch. There would be a $2000 for first, $1000 for second, and $500 for third.

While the tournament is going on, have a fundraiser for the "Let 'em Fly" campaign. People could call in or donate through paypal to help support the troops.

During the broadcast hopefully we could have interviews with past winners, game developers, have a fan q&a session, squad discussion, get some good commentators, really make it a pro event.

And as the tradition is in the golf Masters, the X wing Masters Winner gets a one of a kind bomber jacket (black- imperial, red- rebel, dark green - scum) complete with name, year they won and a specially designed patch for that years event.

Call me crazy but I would hole myself up in my house for the weekend and watch the crap out of that. Or spend $$ for a pass to sit and watch!

Call me crazy...

Okay, you're crazy. :P

One of the things that really appeals to me about X-wing is the openness of the tournament structure. One does not simply walk into Mordor a major Magic event, but I chatted with two people at Nationals who hadn't been to a tournament outside their local store before. I honestly think that's great for the game, and--although the telethon aspect could be cool, and provision to stream and comment on in-progress games would be really cool--I'd like to keep it that way.

Problem is with this it maybe a small tournament.

Not every winner from these event will make it.

Some would have to fly over seas and then add in time from work. Accommodations, etc.

I'd love to go to national myself, it's not all that far, bout a day/day and half drive, but still, hotel, food, gas.

Don't have that kind of money right now.

Plus my wife would probably rather going somewhere else if we were to take a trip somewhere

No. This is not Magic. FFG needs to get MORE people into tournaments, not fewer. They already have a tiered event structure with season kits < store champs < regionals < nationals < worlds. I would much rather see them expand the events they already have than add more limited-number events.

No cash. EVER. We don't need to bring out the money players.

And having been to the Masters, I can gaurentee that going to an "X-wing Masters" wouldn't be nearly as good of an experience.

Yeah, I forgot about epic. My bad. They should totally add more some organized play support to the epic format. However, these would still be open tournaments that would allow all players to participate, which is what I was advocating for.

The idea is nice, but Krynn mentions the logistics aren't there. Maybe it can be possible through Vassal? Not everyone plays on it though.

I'm really hoping the game continues to grow to the point of multiple state wide tournaments that are regionals size. The hardest opponent at these events is fatigue, and I would like to figure out what squads are more effective once fatigue starts kicking so mental errors are less common/significant.
