Firespray repaint: Kath Scarlet themed

By Raine, in X-Wing

This is my first attempt at a repaint of X-Wing Miniatures, so I was super paranoid when I started. Two days I pondered if I should even attempt it, out of fear of ruining the model itself. Yup...I have no confidense in my work. Heh! But, I will say I have been enjoying this project. Not 100% finished yet (Maybe, I'd say 90% currently). Stil some small details and clean-ups I'd like to do with it, but she is at least recognizably table ready.

I did a bunch of research as to which schemes to go with, as there are a lot of Kath Scarlet repaints out there. Which shows that she's definitely a fan fave with the Firesprays! I saw a few patterns I really liked, but this one seems to have a nice symmetry to it that looks great to me, so I took most of the concepts and added a few tweaks here and there. One of the greatest mental challenges I faced was to whither to strip the original paint, or go over it with a primer. In the end I chose to go over it, as there seems to be an even split in the community on which is the best way. Once again fear took over, and I didn't want some cleaning chemical melting the soft plastic.

I took production shots as I went along. I think about 50 or so, but I won't bog you all with that many angles and lighting fixes. Instead, I'll just show the major turning points in the project for you, up until where I'm at currently. If curious, I used a mix of Citadel and P3 Paints.

Hope you like it, and opinions, suggestions and even criticism is welcome.

Thanks!

So, that's where I'm at currently. Oops..forgot to post a back shot. Sorry about that.

Not bad, not bad at all. But try to water down paints more, i can see that thickness of You coat could be counted as another hull point for that firespray:D

Nice job mate.

You are a little heavy on the paint though.

moving forward you should pick up some thinner and some gloss varnish for windows and engine glow

For a first repaint I think that's brilliant mate. Just trying my first repaints now, I know what you mean about the nerves.... but it's just so cool to make the ships your own!

Edit: removed double post ;)

Great work on the beige/grey. The strokes are visible enough to show some wear and adds a lot of character.

'Grats on the finished product!

Thank you all so very much.

I agree that the Cream (P3's Menoth White Base) and White (P3's Menoth White Highlight) came out way thicker than I had imagined it would, and even a bit of water didn't seem to help that. I'll need to invest in some Thinner I think. I'll have to remember that for when I use those again. I used Citadel's 'Ardcoat (similar to a high gloss varnish) on the windshield, which gave it a rather nice glossy finish over the black. So I''m actually quite happy how that turned out. I will be adding some "Activated Engine" effects at the back, and hopefully that'll work out.

Note to self, and all dog owners though...if you look closely, you'll see a few small hairs on the surface there. I thought I picked them all out, but I guess not. My pup decided that my workstation needed some added touches, and her hair got everywhere after the Priming, and then after the first Nuln Oil washing. Ah well. After I finish with everything, I plan on sealing it completely with a Matt Finish spray, just for handling/gaming purposes.

Once again, great responces on this first attempt of mine. Thank you all! :)

Any more feed back or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Cheers!
