Dev Questions for Force and Destiny? Sam Stewart returns to the Order 66 Podcast on Sept. 3 to answer them...

By GM Chris, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

What is up, GamerNation? GM Chris, here...

The Order 66 Podcast is proud to welcome FFG RPG Manager and lead developer of the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook, Sam Stewart, back to the show for a special episode on September 3!

Sam has graciously taken his time (yet again) to talk to all of us FaD Core, its development, design, and creation - and to answer our questions about the final core book in the line. Do you have Force and Destiny questions YOU want to ask the lead developer? Then this thread is place to post up your questions.

As usual when we're fortunate enough to have an FFG guest on the show, we're under a time constraint, and won't likely be able to ask ALL of your questions to Mr. Stewart. But (as most of you know by now...) the questions that get asked are prioritized by their relevance to the book material, and we encourage you to get them in by posting them right here.

The cutoff for questions will be Thursday, August 27. We need a week's worth of lead time to compile questions and notes, and get them to Mr. Stewart and FFG for approval.

And we encourage you to catch the live simulcast of this episode at 8:00pm CST on Sept. 3! You can listen live, and chat real-time with the hosts and guest! http://www.ustream.tv/channel/d20radio

Thanks, everyone! Peace, Love, and Good Gaming,

GMC

What is the best way to handle foresee basic power? Seems very tricky to handle right...

Can't wait to hear this.

Any particular favorites regarding the artwork in the book? The chat about that stuff in the Desperate Allies episode was actually pretty entertaining.

For a bit more involved question, I'd like to hear about the "why?" in the design process when it came to assembling the careers for Force and Destiny. In Edge and Age, a clear archetype can be seen in each career (at least regarding the combat/support/social dynamic), but the lines seem more blurred in Force. All the careers feature a lightsaber form spec, giving a cheap combat recourse to any PC and a lot of the specs feel like they could fall into either combat or support roles. We saw some of this in Age with the Recruit spec, and Edge has since grown from the addition of so many sourcebooks, so now I'm left wondering if FFG has just learned/adopted a new career-assembly style. [in summation: I'd like to know if the career-construction in Force is the result of lessons-learned from the development of Edge and Age, a result of trying to portray a specific intent for the Force setting, some combination of both, or something else entirely?]

I've got 2.

First: Are there plans for a 7th Force based Career, with the saber form being Form 7, Juyo, perhaps with possible Vapaad enhancements?

Second: What is the proper amount of acceptable conflict for someone who wants to be the highest order of Paragon?

I love your interpretation of the lightsaber combat forms, so my question is: When will we see a Juyo or Vaapad specialization?

On a similar note: Why aren't there any Universal specializations in the core book? Age of Rebellion had the Recruit universal spec, and it feels like FaD is missing out - why not Shii-Cho as a Universal, and Juyo for the Warrior's lightsaber spec, for example?

  1. What's your favourite beer? And I mean beer, not that light, piss coloured American swill ...

  2. Can extended and curved hilts be used on a shoto?

    1. Can either be used on lightsaber pikes and/or double-bladed lightsabers?

  3. Can I have an extended curved hilt?

  1. On a double-bladed lightsaber?

  1. And up it by suggesting creating Restricted (or Elite) specialisations, which are always considered non-career. So why would anyone take such a spec? Because it would be awesome.

Any plans for the Jar Kai Lightsaber form?

What are your thoughts on reskinning Gunslinger as Jar Kai

Potential future stuff dude. They don't answer that stuff.

I would love to here the history of this book in relation to Edge and Age. How much of the skeleton had to be outlined 3 years ago other than dice mechaics?

When did decisions like species, careers, specialisations and force powers need to be at least given a place holder name?

On the topic of Force Powers how did your team decide which ones to put into Age/Edge and which to keep for Force?

I noticed the Enhance Tree can be used with a variety of skills, but I didn't see any mention of a Lightsaber skill enhancement. Was this left out to preserve game balance Vs. non force using classes or is there some other issue? From reading Enhance's description it seems like the Lightsaber skill would be a perfect candidate for it. Or am I missing something basic?

Oddly enough, it can't be used for Melee either.

You've got the Sense upgrade for that

And the +Brawn commit upgrade. Either one works great for Melee and Lightsaber.

They cannot (and will not) comment on future plans for future books. We won't get any answers from Sam for any of these questions other than "Can't comment, sorry".

You know I have to ask...

If eating pecan pie gave 1 Conflict for every bite taken, would Sam still eat it?

Is there a cap on the force rating as there is on characteristics?

You ask then we try and read the tea leaves of his response...

Yes, but agility would work for Piloting, and yet Piloting is included. Question stands as is.

Assuming that particular lightsaber duelist even uses Brawn. The commits to Brawn and Agility only help Ataru and Shii Cho. What if you're using one of the other 4 stats?

perhaps there are talents coming down the pipeline that will address this?

i would love to hear some of the cross line and inline Specialisation combinations that have been memorable around the FFG office; a Soresu Analyst? Shien Beast Rider (or Pathfinder Beast-rider)? Aggressor Marauder? what about a Seer Survivalist Gand Finds-man? Advisor Entrepreneur?

When rolling for force points, what happens first, the action or 'activating' the force?

Using Force Leap as an example: Padawn Neo is leaping from one building top to another within medium range to follow his master, let's call him Morpheus. Does Neo make the jump and then, in mid air, rolls his force die and unfortunately only gains one pip, one pip shy of the two needed to complete the jump, which leads to him meeting the pavement below? (Fortunately the pavement below was elastic).

(Edit:) Also, can Force Leap be used three times in a single Turn given all appropriate upgrades and Force Pips required? (Twice as a Maneuver, and once as an Action).

I would like to hear Sam's advice on running Holocrons. Any lessons learned on skill selection, powers, and how players unlock or access these things? Does he have any recommendations?

I was hoping for a clarification on the two weapon combat rules. Specifically how damage is calculated if you succeed to hit with both weapons. The rule says each hit deals base damage, +1 damage per uncancelled success. Does this mean that the uncancelled success is added to each weapon damage OR does it mean the extra successes are added on top of the two base damages total. The first option to me seems like double dipping so I ask you as a developer.
