New to x-wing ... recommendations?

By ulf301, in X-Wing

Hello to all. New player here looking to get into the game. Any best recommendations on what to buy to get started at this stage ... got @$150 to spend. Any online retailers that may offer more bang for the buck so to speak? Are model waves considered collectable similar to card games whereas once they are out for a while they would demand a premium price? In other words if i try to buy a Millenium Falcon and the seller is asking for 2x the origional retail quoting "rarity" an i being scammed?

Thanks for any advice and your time in reading my post.

Waves are not sold at a premium and they attempt to keep all in stock.

Get a core obviously first. Then it depends on what faction(s) you wanna get. Since you mention Falcon I assume Rebels I would get core set, Falcon, E-wing, X-Wing, Rebel Aces.

Support local game store but if not an option, Miniature Market is good in the US. There's other online retailers that are better for other countries.

2 core sets first and go from there.

Couple of B-wings and Rebel aces are good for Rebels along with Falcon.

Z-95s for filler.

for the start go with

1core

for rebels:

b-wing

rebel aces

falcon

y-wing

(e-wing)

z95

for imperials:

imperial aces

interceptor

decimator

(phantom)

(shuttle)

for scum:

most wanted

IG2000

y-wing

HWK290

(starviper)

Core set first. 2 if you want to play Imperial

Rebels:

Aces

Bwing

Bwing

Xwing

Falcon

the rest

Scum:

Most Wanted

Firespray

HWK

you're good until Bossk lands

Imperial

If it has TIE in the name, buy it, except for the Advanced or the Defender. They still suck for the moment.

Decimator

Imperial

If it has TIE in the name, buy it, except for the Advanced or the Defender. They still suck for the moment.

Decimator

If you plan to play Imperial, the epic Raider has upgrade cards that make the Advanced much better and viable. Bottom line is get what you like. You can almost never go wrong getting at least 1 of every ship, but on a limited budget, stick with one faction for now, then expand as needed and when you know more about the game and what you like to play.

wow thanks for all the responses .... not looking to focus on any one faction just yet, just used the falcon as an example. Should i go with the 2 core sets vrs 1 core set, dice set and tie/xwing starter for pilots? I know im asking a lot of questions and appreciate the advice.

I would not spend the extra money on a second core set. Just grab an extra set of dice and spend the rest on ships you want to try and fly.

Just buy a bunch of X-Wings and HWK-290's. In fact, buy in favor of the HWK's, using X-Wings as a last resort.

(this is terrible advice, btw)

Heh...feeling saucy today I guess. Anyway, it depends what you want. Are you going to play competitively, going to leagues and events, or are you going to play with friends at home and supply most of the ships?

In response to your last post, I would stick with the single core set for now....most people end up with 2 or 3, but that's once they start getting serious into the game. It is a great value to get TIE's and X-Wings, but as of late, they haven't been seeing much table time.

Ships can become rare and people will start charging premiums for them, as you described, but those are generally "dry spells" with a shortage of current supply, not because something has been discontinued or out of print. In general, FFG will not discontinue ships while the game is still "alive", so don't let anyone tell you "the Millennium Falcon is out of print" or "this was a first run Slave 1 with the special upgrade and is worth more to collectors." Those are scams.

EDIT: for some reason, while individual expansions hold their value well, if people sell their entire collections they generally go for cheap. Join some facebook groups and see if you can score someone's collection...it will be a chunk of change upfront, but is generally the best value.

150 bucks. I'd go something like:

Core

Rebel Aces

Imperial Aces

E-Wing/Xwing

TIE Fighter

TIE Interceptor

Then perhaps a large ship of choice per side, like Falcon + Firespray/Decimator.

And yes, buying the Xwing/TIE/Interceptor expansions is nice because it gets you the other pilots like Howlrunner, Soontir Fel, and Wedge

Actually SCUMHWKS are amazing I find. At least one of them in a support role does wonders. but yeah, no need to spam them.

To the OP. What do you want to run? How do you want to play? If casual rather than tourney then specific cards arn't going to be an issue so much as you can proxy.

Play some games with your core set.

Print out proxy cards and use proxy minis.

See what you like.

Use the search function on this forum to see what others have recommended.

2 Core is a good start because you will need the extra dice and stuff. Plus the 3 ships you get come cheaper than 3 individual ships. Get an X-Wing expansion and a TIE Fighter expansion for the extra pilots (and upgrades). All that should run you about $80 online. Rebel Aces and Imperial Aces for another $40. TIE Interceptor, A-Wing, and B-Wing expansions for your last $30. You'll have 7 Rebel ships and 8 Imperial ships and tons of pilot options for all. Alternatively, dropping the second Core frees up $30, which will get you a large ship (like the Falcon) and maybe another small ship (say another TIE Fighter because they love to swarm). So, either one of these will be a very, very good start to your game:

Option A (7 Rebels, 8 Imperials):

2 Core $60

Rebel Aces $20

Imperial Aces $20

X-Wing $10

TIE Fighter $10

A-Wing $10

B-Wing $10

TIE Interceptor $10

Option B (7 Rebels including Falcon, 7 Imperials)

1 Core $30

Rebel Aces $20

Imperial Aces $20

Millenium Falcon $20

2 TIE Fighter $20

X-Wing $10

A-Wing $10

B-Wing $10

TIE Interceptor $10

Just as a note, if you get 2 core sets to still want the individual tie fighter and x-wing expansions, since they have some of the marquee pilots (wedge and howlrunner). 2 core sets is still a good investment, but not necessary as an initial purchase unless you want to run a 3 x-wing list (stil a good beginners list) or a tie fighter swarm or mini swarm. Extra dice are a waste unless you emphatically DONT want the ships in a second core.

Other than the core, it's really up to what you want. The aces packs are a good buy, as are the falcon or slave 1. Really, it comes down to buy what you want.

As for where to buy, I advocate buying your "start-up" stuff from miniature market to let the budget stretch as much as possible. After that, support your local store.

This post happens literally 5-10 times a week. Do a bit of forum lurking before posting.

Also, the rule of cool does new guys well. You're going to enjoy the game way more playing what you think is cool more than if you play what is hip.

I started with 2 core sets and never regret it. Having an extra pair of dice and templates is nice and you start with 6 ships (2 x wings and 4 tie fighters).

After that, get what appeals to you the most. I started with a mix of agile ships and tanks (interceptor and b-wings).

Having a slave 1 and falcon on the table feels very iconic and epic while playing.

But just the get the ships that appeal to you the most and build from there. Dont worry to much about the meta and what cards to get and not to get. Start with your gut feeling about the ships you like and eventually you want to get more options and can always buy more diverse ships with other interesting cards.

I support the get 2 core sets. That way not only do you get more models which you will probably use if you play either of those factions you have enough dice to be useful plus extra maneuvers and damage decks to replace lost pieces/ play with a friend.
