Here's a glimpse into the K-wings early concept designs:
Three pegs aren't enough... Stupid TIE fighters. Well, those are rare, right? What are the odds of running into TIE fighters?
3720 to 1
My problem with it is there's just no cohesiveness to it's design. It's like parts of 4 completely unrelated ships were cobbled together in a bad kitbash. The main wings are too rectangular - they need some tapering or some sweep (forward or backward). Meanwhile the nose has some curves, but looks like it was cut out of the middle of a bigger (maybe flying wing or Cylon or Dralthi) curved ship. Needs a longer, more built-up fuselage to connect the cockpit to the wings and engines. And those ventral wings? Because more wings with more bombs! And landing gear! As someone said previously, external munitions aren't very Star Wars.
As much as I think B-Wings are a bit silly looking, at least they have an overall design aesthetic which the K-Wing just lacks. We'll see if my opinion changes like the OP's did once I have one in hand. FFG probably did the best they could with the source material they had.
At least the punisher is made from 4 of the same ship!
I know right. It's just so Rebel. Exactly how I like my Rebel ships

"Never tell me the odds"
I respect all of you who like the ship but as soon as I have one, I'll chop it up and convert the heck out of it, only my procrastination could save it
Looks even better in Esege's paint scheme... here's my WIP on it.
I think it says something that it takes a garish orange paint scheme to improve the looks of the Kwing. I keep looking at this paint job and trying to figure out why it suddenly looks better...

I can't say I agree. Speaking strictly from the original trilogy standpoint, all their ships had clear designs. The Rebels may have repurposed non-military ships (Mon Cal) or stolen Imperial ships, but they didn't raid the Empire's chop shops and weld together whatever they could get their hands on and call it a day.
In any case, it's great that many people like how it looks and I'm sure FFG's execution of the concept was solid, but for me it's in the so ugly it's ugly camp rather than so ugly it's cool. Many consider the A-10 an ugly aircraft, and while I agree it's not sleek or flashy, it's design uncompromisingly reflects it's purpose in life, and there is a beauty in that. The K-Wing is more like an unrestrained uber-spaceship wishlist given form, if that makes sense.
But hey, sorry for the negative vibes. Enjoy your K-Wing(s)!
