At a recent tourney I did very well with Vader/Marek and an Omicron with the Emp and Sensor jammer. Overrated? Negative, it was just plain awesome to land 4 crits multiple rounds paired with ATC/X1 at range 1. He is appropriately cost IMO, if he were any cheaper it would super broken.
i feel like he could be 1 or 2 points cheaper the addidtional cost coming in as taking two crew slots.
Edited by Panic 217Palpatine is an absolute beast.
Watched my friend absolutely wreck Brobots with him and a TIE Advanced escort recently. Not once, but twice. First time in the tournament, the second tine for fun while they were waiting for everyone else to finish.
It was scary to watch. But then, a list featuring two dark lords of the Sith SHOULD be scary

As it is, I only just lost my first match with him last week. I probably went at least 20-1 with him.
imo very overcosted, he should have costed 6 points or stayed 8 but only 1 crew
Or even 3 points... now if he could change a dice once but with all of his ships in range one or even two, say... that would be great. Changing a single dice per turn is not anything super-awesome, and certainly not for the high-ass-cost.

I always thought you might be crazy JBR7. Now, I know for sure.

Just say'n changing a single die roll for two crew AND 8 points once per turn is nothing to fall over backwards over.

I've used him in a couple of games of epic so far and he is so insanely good I actually feel dirty using him.
I've only used him once so far in regular 100 pts and that was on Kenkirk, and again...amazing.
The flexibility he brings is crazy good. He isn't an expensive upgrade, he is a cheap force multiplier.
I've mentioned it in a few places, but I've been running Palpatine on an otherwise naked Omicron Group Pilot, and he's been very effective. If your opponent sees him as a threat and tries to kill him early, it's an extra-durable 29-point Biggs. If your opponent doesn't focus on him early, he represents either an extra point of critical damage or an extra shield every round he's alive.
The Emperor is working just fine for me, thanks.
Just wait until you get on the wrong side of him JBR7. The Dark Side, as I were. And you feel th wrath of his FULLY ARMED AND OPERATIONAL BATTLE STATION.
Seriously, having that ability available is a huge advantage, especially when combined with potent threats like ATC Vader, Juno, Fel or Whisper.
When your playing against two or three ship lists, being able to change one friendly dice result a round can be God-tier awesome.

I shall relent to the Dark Power... i love him too of course, but **** he IS expensive... is all.
**** high-ass-light bill!

I wasn't completely sold on him either. Then I saw a few games of the Nova Open that featured. Sold.

Yes. I should pay closer attention to my own math - the math earlier in this thread essentially concludes that he will always earn his points back, especially when paired with a glass cannon like Fel or Whisper. I'm 0-4 vs Kenkirk+Palpatine. It's a really hard counter to BroBots.
Edited by MajorJuggleri too have to change my opinion, i've played a few games with the OGP+Palpatine and it has served me very well, especially when Stele rolled 4 crits at R1 with the Emperors help on a shieldless Bossk ![]()
He's extremely susceptible to Darth Vader... and gravity.

The math is tough, becuase it is so dependent on the situation. Just how much is it worth to give Whisper an extra turn, for at least one more shot, and worse, potentially getting Whisper into a better position. It is one of those things that you have to see to truly get the benefit for it.
I think the 2 crew was at least in part a thematic restriction. Otherwise you could put him on a Firespray, and that would have been weird.
Overcosted? I think you're not giving it enough credit. Any dice, any ship, every round, after you see the result. That's huge.
Or a Phantom. I can only imagine the screaming that woukd have caused.

More people should listen to me...
I said at the start that he would be really good on Kenkirk, the synergy is obvious and when paired with any glass cannon just gets better.

Nah, it would probably just have been the echo of a whisper....

It's not that hard for a given set of uses though. For example, using it on defense, you increase the durability of the ship by one hit point per use, and use the fundamental square law to calculate the resulting increased value. It's easy enough that I was running the numbers on my phone during one dinner out at NOVA Open. Certainly the more times you get to use Palpatine, the more value you get out him.
It's the same process that I used to put a range on C-3P0's value, which finally put hard numbers to how undercosted he was.
More people should listen to me...

Yup!
Edited by MajorJugglertwo crew is totally thematic - everywhere he travels he has his guards, and aides...
Yep, he's terribly overrated, so everyone should stop playing him while I try to figure out how to make him work.
