VSD tactics and ship parity

By Viper827, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

I am very new to this type of game, in fact a total Virgin. I have played 4 starter games with 3 of my friends and tried varing things but in all 4 games only once have I manage to get a front arc shot with the VSD!!!!!!

Is there something I am missing?

Also bit of a moan but the rebel ships are rock.... A frigate with 5 die to each left and right arc and speed 3 with shields that equal a VSD ...... MC 80 with 6 die to the flanks!!!!! Not to mention the MKII more shields, faster and comparable armed to the VSD!!!!!It is much easier, especially with speed, to get a broadside. Also superior fighters/bombers......

Beginning to think the empire is the underdog lol.....

Am I just being a total newbie ????

Use more navigation commands.

This isn't quite a rules question but I have some suggestions.

The VSD isn't really a get in there and fight ship. It's best used as a squadron carrier and an area denial tool. Wherever the VSD front arc is, you know you're opponent won't be going there.

Imperial squadrons are quite strong especially with Interceptors and pretty much all of the unique pilots. Rhymes bombers can do things and threaten ships in a way that most Rebel squadrons simply cannot.

Straight forward and simple..... Thanks fellas things to try in my next game

You're just being a total newbie. Imagine you're playing against me. You're using Rebels and I'm the Imperial player. You have your CR90s and Nebulons, I have my VSD. You KNOW my VSD rolls 6 dice on the front arc. Are you really, REALLY going to park your ships on my front arc? No. You're going to use your speed and maneuverability to get out of that arc and attack me from my sides, right? You will make me have to work for that front-arc shot!

Why would you expect your friends to do anything different?

As for Empire being the underdog, well, I've played a few opponents who would strongly disagree. :D

If you want tips on how to play the game, on how to fly Imperials (or Rebels), then you are in the right spot on the interwebs. If you want to know how YOU want to play the game, you're in the wrong place. Go out there and play and figure out what's best for you. For instance, MikeNYHC suggests that the VSD is a squadron carrier and an area denial tool. True, it is an area denial tool as nobody wants to be in it's front arc... in fact the only place WORSE than the front arc is that sliver of space where the VSD can fire at you with both a side arc and the front arc! However, I disagree with the VSD being a squadron carrier. I've only played my fleet with squadrons in my first few games and in my first tournament. After that, I've been playing ships-only. 2 VSDs and a GSD, 1 VSD and 2 GSDs, 3 GSDs, 4 GSDs, and not a squadron in sight!

I like the idea of a huge "no" zone and the overall sluggish-ness of the Vics.

I assume you mean to use the nav command to get a yaw of I I ? I can see how that would have been useful in yesterday's game.

Yes, but you don't always want to be zipping around at speed 2. You need to be able to speed up and slow down on the victory, so its always good to have a navigate token at least on hand.
