Held off on Scum until now; what should I get?

By Marvingardns, in X-Wing

I'm more of a casual player and have never actually played tournament. I do, however, collect X-wing lavishly judging from my bank statements and play it often with my father or brothers and occasionally at my FLGS. I have held off from buying Scum all this time waiting until the time newer ships hit the shelves. With the imminent arrival of Wave 7 so near, I think now is the time to introduce Scum to my table.

The question is how much of each ship or pack (through Wave 7) should I get to have decent options for a fun and competitive casual build? I don't want gamey tournament dominance (i.e. owning two Decimators or two Falcons), or the ability to outfit a whole swarm of Autoceptors... just wide options for a Scum build. I already own 4 Y-wings, 6 Headhunters, 2 HWK's and two Firesprays.

I thought about picking up the following:

Most Wanted (x1)

Syck (x2)

Kirakz (x3)

Aggressor (x1)

Viper (x2)

YV-666 (x1)

Any thoughts on this? I'm looking to keep this under around $200 for an order.

The aggressor is almost a subfaction of its own if you pick 2 of them. They are easy to get into, but hard to master. Tons of fun though :)

I agree with dotswarlock. See if you can't fit a second IG-88 in there because that is a super-fun archetype to fly. Otherwise, your list looks like a decent spread with lots of options.

I would start with no more than 1 Scyk for now until you try it out. I would also go easy into the Kihraxz until you see how it flies. Many are excited about the prospect of running 5 of them but I'm going to take a wait and see approach on that.

I have 2 Star Vipers and like them a lot but the point cost has limited their use. That may change with the Kihraxz around to fill a point need. The benefit of 2 Star Vipers is that each expansion comes with 2 copies of Autothrusters so if you like using a bunch of A-Wings or Interceptors this could be helpful (but since it doesn't sound like you are a tournament player that could be a moot point as proxies are perfectly acceptable in casual play). That being said you may want just 1 for starters.

I would strongly suggest a second Aggressor to utilize the IG-2000 title and run a pair of loaded up IG-88's. Lots of fun. Very strong.

I would also suggest that you consider a 2nd Most Wanted expansion. By doing so you get a ton of stuff to start and also access to every combination of running dual Firesprays, and in particular a pair of Mando Mercs. The base token arrangement has Boba and Emon sharing one token while Kath and the Merc share the other. Purchasing 2 allows you to run both Kath and the Merc.

Now all of that being said you also may want to add additional HWK-290's or Y-Wings to your collection depending on what you already have.

Lots of choices. I would recommend easing into some until you really know what you like. But dual Aggressors for sure.

I would drop the Sycks all together. They just don't seem to fit well unless you run them as a swarm or one ship carrying a cannon with other ships in the list. Also, the cards it comes with aren't super necessary considering other expansions you might be getting/already have.

I would consider dropping at least one of those (both unless you just really want to have one) and if you don't already have a Rebel Y-Wing, pick that up so you can run two Scum Y-Wings.

Nice purchase list, though. I'm glad someone else shares my opinion on double large ship lists lol

Agreed. I'd get 2 Aggressors as the ship is designed to be flown with other copies of itself and gains bonuses accordingly.

The Scyk isn't a terribly useful ship. I'd remove one Scyk and one Kihrax and add an Agressor to keep roughly the same price.

I have seen Scyks used effectively in one list. It was Kath Scarlet with 3 Scyks. Two had Manglers and the other was naked. Kath would try to boost past and shoot from the rear while the 3 Scyks would fly slowly to blast with Manglers. The naked Scyk would fly in the front of the rest and attract al the attention or try to bump whoever comes at them. It's a good list as you have to pick who to go for. If you go for one group, the other covers them.

I am also thinking Scyks can fly naked, but they need to have other ships to draw their attention away. The Kihraxz fighter could be just the thing to add to beef out a list. Think of the Scyk as a Tie Fighter that can TL. That's great if you have something to occupy their attention with other ships. The little Scyks can get in the way or arc dodge at R1 to fire with TL.

I almost want to see a list of:

2 Kihraxz

2 Scyks

2 Z-95's

Or throw out the Z's for a HWK-290, Y-wing, or something else. I think a hodge-podge list could do well.

Scyks are also good for a cheap Ion Cannon, as well.

If you want to go consevative, just take 1 Scyk, though. I know some people hate them, have to take them in swarms, or can't resist putting an HLC on them.

I love my Starviper and have really good success with a Xizor w/ Z-95 swarm, but I have never used 2 of them in one match. If you don't need them for the Autothrusters, I'd just order one Starviper.

If you are trying to cut costs, you can drop a Kihraxz fighter. No one has tried them yet, but I think they will fill a great roll in Scum. They are a mid-range ship with good movement and firepower. They are X-wings before B-wings came out. There isn't another ship that really fills the role of a solid combat ship for the Scum. I think you would do fine with 3, but it's probably OK if you went with 2.

From what you (and pretty much everyone else so far) are saying, I think I'd go:

Most Wanted (x2)

Syck (x1)

Kiraxz (x2)

Aggressor (x2)

StarViper (x1)

YV-666 (x1)

For starters of course... :-)

I'd start with double IG-2000. Complete list all on their own. Then get a Starviper for the Autothrusters to put on the IGs.

I bought 2 IG-88's and have yet to fly them. I'm kind of wishing I hadn't. I'm just so tired of seeing bro-bots constantly on the table that I just can't bear to put them on..

I almost want to see a list of:

2 Kihraxz

2 Scyks

2 Z-95's

Hmmmmm. What about 2 Cartel Spacers with Manglers and 3 Cartel Marauders?

Hmmmmm. What about 2 Cartel Spacers with Manglers and 3 Cartel Marauders?

I've thought about something like that, as well. It could work very well.

4 x Cartel Spacers

Serissu

That's another list I've thought about. Have Serissu just Evade each turn. If you fire at her, then you are having four 3 red dice attacks at you for that first turn. Depending on what you have, she might actually live. If you fire at the other ships, Serissu makes them much more survivable.

It's that type of a list that 2 ship lists will hate. Pour your 2 shots into Serissu? You may kill her, but then are taking 12 dice back at you in that one turn.

I just realized the other day that I haven't used my Outrider yet! How about you bring BroBots this week and I bring the YT-2400? Lol

I would drop both scyks and 1 Kihraxz and add a second most wanted to your list.

You're going to get a ton of great cards and having 2 scum Y-wings and a swarm if Z's is always handy.

Do you already have a Firespray? I'd also hold out on a second Aggressor to start with. You will like using one and certainly get a second at some point but I don't think it's needed right away

Considering he is new to Scum but not new to X-Wing, I assume he already has the ships he needs for Most Wanted. Getting a second copy likely means 4 Y-wings 4 Zs. Plus, if he has 2 rebel Z dials, a second Most Wanted gives him the potential to run 6 Z-95s. Personally, I think that's overkill because at that point you can almost build a list around just Y-wings or just Z-95 Headhunters. It sounds like the OP is looking for variety more than anything, so I think the second Most Wanted doesn't do as much. Plus, not a few of those upgrade cards are released in the YV-666 and Jumpmaster.

From OP:

I already own 4 Y-wings, 6 Headhunters and two Firesprays.

if you don't have any Firesprays you want a couple both bobba and Kath are great in a dogfight and emon makes bombing interesting.

Single Iggy's have done well. I think most of them have been paired with a Firespray.

Oops. No need for assumptions then. My bad.

From what you (and pretty much everyone else so far) are saying, I think I'd go:

I'd agree with this list.

Thanks! I forgot to mention I already have two HWK's as well. I think I'll go with:

Most Wanted (x1)

Syck (x1)

Kiraxz (x2)

Aggressor (x2)

Starviper (x1)

YV-666 (x1)

All for less than $150 I think.

I'd drop the second Aggressor as well, unless you really feel the need to run 2x. I've yet to fly all the fantastic squads I can build with 1x Most Wanted, 1x Y-Wing, 1x Aggressor, 1x YV-666, 1x HWK. There are TONS of great options there.

For what it's worth, I bought only 1 Starviper and 1 Aggressor and immediately wanted one more of each. They are arriving with my Raider (tomorrow if the tracking gods don't lie). I would say get 2 Starvipers.

I finally flew Scum this weekend. 1 Starviper, 1 Aggressor and 2 Scyk. Terrible list, but it was just for fun to try the ships. The Starviper was a lot of fun, as was the Aggressor. I am glad I have 1 more of each on the way. The Syck were very lackluster. They live up to the glass cannon title.

I bought 2 IG-88's and have yet to fly them. I'm kind of wishing I hadn't. I'm just so tired of seeing bro-bots constantly on the table that I just can't bear to put them on..

I feel a bit like that and as a result my aggressors have seen less table time than my other Scum and Villany ships.

To get around it, try fielding them with autoblasters - it's a totally different way to fly them, and makes the ubiquitous IG88-B almost completely redundant, allowing you to try out combos of the others... C and D with advanced sensors is a lot of fun!

What should you get?
