MEN OF THE WEST

By Chris85, in Strategy and deck-building

Hi everyone

This is my first post but I'm a long time reader of topics on this site.

I'm posting today in the hopes that someonee could help me out or point me toward a good two handed thematic deck consisting of rohan and gondor.

I have a rohan deck already that I enjoy and holds up that includes eomer, spirit theoden and eowyn. It holds up pretty well and I love playing it but want a gondor deck to accompany it as my brother is a huge gondor enthusiast and thematically I love the idea of te two decks supporting eachother. He would love tactics boromir, be regions and imrahil but he understands that this might not be best option and doesn't mind if there are better options

I'm not bothered if the decks arnt powerhouses, as long as they're fun and thematic but can hold there own.

I also love the idea of using cards like mutual accord and using cards in deck 1 that are specifically for deck 2 and vice versa.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

I would like to hear too if someone has these kind of decks, because Rohan and Gondor decks has always been really hard themes for me to build decks.

Yeah, being able to have two decks represent rohan and gondor respectively and coming together to compliment eachother would be a thematic orgasm.

The foundations are there for sure, with cards like mutual accord accompanied with leadership boromir a ability and visionary leadership have potential to be devastating.

Or rohans many ally discard abilities that trigger not only eomers attack boost but ready imrahil and trigger horn of gondor.

With theoden included you can effectively play horse breeder, scry for a mount, chump block, ready imrahil, reciew a resource for horn of gondor an boost eomers attack by 2, all for ZERO RESOURCES!!!!

There are other deck synergy combos but something seems to be lacking an I can't see the defining card/s showing up until the return of the king saga expansions

I *almost* did this recently with a mixed pair of monosphere decks -- Leadermir, Imrahil, Erkenbrand and Speoden, Eowyn,... Frodo. (Hey, I was paranoid I needed another defender.) All the allies were Rohan/Gondor, though. One of the odder design decisions was to put all my copies of Eomund in the mono-Leadership deck, just to be Sneak Attack'ed. Having Pelargir Shipwright quest for 4WP after Visionary Leadership hits the table is very satisfying.

I've only tried it against a couple of scenarios, but it pleasantly spanked The Massing at Osgiliath. I didn't get to pull off some ridiculous Mutual Accord move, but it did end with a nice win-more moment, where Astonishing Speed and a double-triggered Faramir willpower boost (thanks, Strength of Arms) combined for such a high willpower value that I didn't bother fully counting.

Eomund sneak atk in the gondor deck sounds awesome! Hadn't considered it.

Pelagir shipwrights questing monster synergy between the two is exactly what I'm aiming for as an overall natural companionship between the deck builds

I also like the idea of mutual accord enabling spirit Hama to become the target of gondorian discipline allowing him to withstand an attack of 5 and then an attack of 6 before ultimately discarding himself readying imrahil, boosting eomer and triggering the horn. All at zero cost too

Man, hadn't thought of that. I think you can do even better than you said, though: if you ready Hama with his effect after declaring him as a defender, he's already a total of 5DEF, so with Gondorian Discipline, he can tolerate 8ATK without dying!

Though if you want effective Imrahil readying/Eomer boosting, Hama has to leave play before player attacks, so he actually has to serve as a chump blocker after that (as opposed to his own discard effect, which only happens at the end of the combat phase). Not actually so easy when you're 5DEF, heh.

Ah yeah good point :P I guess it's only worth while if I want him to survive the attack

double-triggered Faramir willpower boost (thanks, Strength of Arms).

How i never realised this that you can use hes ability again if you manage to ready him. THANKS SAPPIDUS :D

IMO the best way to play Gondor at least in solo, is mono-Leadership with Boromir, Aragorn and either Sam or Balin. Imrahil could be also a good option if using the upcoming Valour keywords. Basically you use all the Leadership weenies and Gondor allies like Envoy, Errand Rider, Herald of Anorien, Ship captain, etc, and all the buffs like Boromir, Faramir, Visionary Leadership, Sword that was Broken, even a single Celebrían´s Stone can be a great splash. The thing is, you will mainly use Galadriel to fetch for free an attachment from the top 5 cards. That is huge, and works wonders, even though it's not really thematic in the traditional sense. If using Balin you also gain access to King Under the Mountain for card draw, again, a really powerful effect for Leadership. You also run Gandalf + Sneak attack, obviously, still an amazing combo. Also a couple Tome of Atanatar and Strength of Arms, to just ready all your allies after questing. And if that wasn't enough, we now got Ingold and Veteran of Osgiliath. This would be my 2 cents for Leadership Gondor.

As for Rohan, yeah, Eowyn Eomer Theoden is my favorite lineup, even though I haven't played it. It just seems like the best deck, at least in solo where you need to do everything well. This is the current list of what I wanna play as Rohan:

theoden
eowyn
eomer
hama x1
horsebreeder x3
wr traveller x3

I brought a pair of Rohan/Gondor decks to GenCon that worked really well together. The heroes were Faramir(Le)/Aragorn(T)/Mablung and Theodred/Theoden(S)/Eowyn.

Now I'm kicking myself for not writing them down before I tore them apart. I can try to reassemble them from memory if there's any interest.

Yeah tactics gondor does seem to be the most accessible overall so I may have to let beregond go in favour of erkenbrand.

The rohan deck looks good too, I will give it a try and see how it favours compared to my usual build

AUTHRAW that woul be awesome! Thanks

I had a lore gondor deck that had leadership boromir to give all the Rangers a boost. It basically had boromir for the good attachments in leadership and his boost when he had resources. Oh, and sneak attack. The rest was pretty much lore. It origanlly was lore aragorn, lore faramir, and leadership boromir but I like the new trap lore ranger better than faramir. I would play this in combination with my Rohan deck which was fun to see the bonuses cross over.

Nice! Do you have a deck list?

Sorry, I forgot to write it down before I tore it apart.

It had all the the lore gondor Rangers. Only one of the uniques seeing they were cool but not needed to function.

Seeing it had two lore heroes it ran the pay one draw for the amount of lore heroes.

It ran ithillean pit and forest snare for traps but it should probably be more with switching out faramir for the new lore ranger hero. Speaking of faramir, his leadership ally version should be added to the deck.

It had Aragorns stuff to make him leadership and plus one to everyone's will power.

It ran three steward of gondor that had to go on aragorn to give him gondor, plus he was the best choice for resources.

Gandalf and sneak attack were in there. The event that makes all gondor people and Rohan people get each other's traits was in there along with the event that gave everyone an attack and defense bonus for being gondor was in there.

I did have ranger bow in there to put on the weak Rangers.

It had the silvan guy to look at the top card just for good measure. It had a couple of the warden of healing also a bonus with the gondor trait.

It was still in the midst of being fine tuned when I scraped it for a different project so this list of the basics of what was in it is the framework. I will say that I wasn't happy with the amount of thinks to spend boromir's resources on but at the same time I didn't really have enough going for him that I wanted more leadership cards. So if there is an attachment I missed that lets you spend resources to do something that would be perfect for him.

Parting Gifts? Or just a Song of Wisdom?

I like permanent effects over one shots so I would go with the attachment. I forgot Lord of Morthand when I made the deck so don't forget that seeing most of your allies will be lore.

I like the idea of the deck, the ranger aspect of gondor isn't something I've tried out yet, the deck sounds promising though and could go well with a rohan partner deck so I will give it a whirl

Here is a pair for you. The Gondor deck is pretty well refined. The Rohan deck is still in it's infancy, so it might need some tweaking. But I think it is a really solid beginning.

Comments:

Ok so this is a bit oddball I know. But I am convinced, convinced I tell you- that Spirit/Lore Rohan is really, really good. At least as good as Spirit/Tactics Rohan and maybe better. Hence my helms-deepish (Haldir) rohan deck. The Gondor deck blocks and supplies bows of the Galadhrim for Haldir, plays guys with 8 million attack and generally does what tactics does best. It does have some help with questing though, Celebrian's stone if you draw it goes over to Theoden to boost his Willpower further.

For Rohan, lore is nice because of 1. Gleowine, and you can muster him (hopefully). Card draw is hard to come by with Rohan decks I noticed, Gleowine helps a lot, and 2. Ambush is perfect for Rohan because it bypasses Rohan's main weakness: needing to defend. Favor of the Lady is sort of weird, not sure if I like it, but if it is good on anybody it's good on Theoden, right?

The decks look cool, il try them out tonight.

Quick question though, is theoden supposed to be in both decks?

Lord of Morthond only works in mono-Leadership.

Since Leadership Theoden doesn't exist yet, I assume the first one was meant to be Theodred.

Ah, righto. Probably why I didn't have it in the deck originally. I was just doing a quick scan for other cards to throw in there and didn't read it too hard. And I have never built an outlandish deck, so...

d'oh. Yeah, Theodred is what I meant. Edited for future reference.

I went back through today and tried to remember my GenCon decks. I've posted them on CardGameDB:

Gondor goes to GenCon

Rohan goes to GenCon

They did pretty well at a lot of the things we threw at them over GenCon, including a bunch of the Lost Realm and Angmar Awakened quests, but we weren't able to beat Ruins of Belegost with them.

EDIT: I think there's something wrong with the CardGameDB website, because I can't see one of the decks. So in the meantime, here are the decklists in plain text:
