I’ve been living in Japan for almost four months, and during that time I’ve found a small but growing X-Wing community in the Tokyo area. This is a report from the X-Wing tournament held on the 19th of July at Mr.Field Hobbyspace in Kashiwa, in the neighbouring prefecture of Chiba.

An Imperial player since I started playing last year, I thought the move to a new country and the release of Scum and Villainy was a good opportunity to defect from The Empire and try something fresh. I knew that I wanted to run at least one Firespray in my list, and eventually settled on Fett backed up by a couple of Y-Wings.

The general plan for the list was to drop all of my bombs in each game. The Ys get in close and cause trouble with their ABTs and Prox Mines, while Fett flies through and flings a seismic into the fray. Even if it means hitting the Y-Wings. Especially if it means hitting the Y-Wings.

I arrived at Mr.Field’s to be greeted by the store mascot, then it was a short elevator ride up to the store itself. As well as wargames like 40k or Bolt Action, this is one of the few places close to Tokyo that actually stocks X-Wing, as well as Armada.

Tournament Structure:

3 rounds of Swiss.
75 minute rounds.

Match 1 vs Ben
Wes Janson (VI + R3-A2)
Wedge Antilles (Opportunist + R2 Astromech)
Luke Skywalker (Draw Their Fire, R2D2)

Starting in opposite corners of the map we both went straight ahead before turning in towards the “box” of asteroids close to the centre of the map. I sent Fett and one Y in one way while the other went in from another side to flank when they turned into the asteroids.

I turned Fett away from the fight, with the intention of dropping the Seismic as they followed him out of the asteroids. However, the first two rounds of shooting were not kind to me and he’d been taken down to two health, while the X-Wings were untouched. I had to hope that the bombs would do enough damage to swing the fight back in my favour, but a Prox Mine on Wes only resulted in a single damage and he and Luke were cautious enough to avoid the Seismic Bomb that hit Wedge (and two Ys).


Why Fett, why!?

Playing it safe with my crippled Fett meant that he ended up skirting the fight for the next few turns before turning in and being promptly executed by Wes. The Ys were able to bring down Wedge but the other two Xs were able to clear them off the board shortly after Fett.

Result: 34/100 loss.

Match 2 vs Yannis
IG88-B ( VI + HLC + Advanced Sensors + Inertial Dampeners + AutoThrusters)
IG88-C ( VI + HLC + Advanced Sensors + Inertial Dampeners + AutoThrusters)

Local Robot Master and winner of the previous tournament, Yannis was never going to be an easy opponent and he quickly set about dismantling my list. Using Advanced Sensors and self-blocking he was able to keep both IGs shooting while my ships struggled to break through his defense dice.


Eventually he’d dispatched one Y and put my other ships into low hull, while I’d only been able to chip off roughly half of each IG’s health. Things were looking grim and it looked like the game was Yannis’ when just two poor defense rolls and a single autoblaster hit destroyed both IGs in the closing minutes of the match.

One interesting thing I noticed during the tournament is that some of the Japanese players, lacking a localized version of the game, had taken to editing cards themselves.


Eagle-eyed readers will have already noticed that this is actually an illegal list. After a brief discussion the offending card was replaced with Recon Specialist.

Match 3 vs Nag

Another Scum squadron and my first Japanese player of the day. First turn we ran our small ships up the centre towards each other, while our Firesprays went up opposite sides of the board. On the second turn I sensed that he might turn Kavil and the Spacer towards Fett so I pushed the Ys forward and turned Fett in to block and then hopefully drop his Seismic. Kavil and the Spacer did exactly what I’d predicted, but he also kept Kath going straight instead of turning through the asteroids, which left her out of the fight for at least the next turn.



I’d been able to squeeze a couple of hits through on the Spacer before he crashed into Fett, so when he K-turned behind Fett on the following turn it was clear what had to be done:



Kavil had also taken some fire and a Prox Mine on the following turn dealt him a couple of hits and a double damage to remove him from the match.



I then spent the next half a dozen turns chasing Kath all up one side of the board, with her and Fett exchanging fire until I was finally able to land the killing blow.
