which of the CRB's is your favorite?

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

In celebration of Force and Destiny finally being on its way to my home I thought it was fun to see which of the systems is mst popular on these boards and why. Now I know the EotE boards are frequented way more often than the other 2 but that might also have to do with the fact that it has been around the longest.

So, which of the CRB's do you prefer, and why?

I think that EotE's CRB is the best because it lets you play out in the rim, not in an organised military or as a dedicated Force user (I tend to think of AoR and FaD as being expansion packs to the base experience of EotE)

Ditto. Plus I always felt the EotE CRB let us explore an element of the universe that wasn't largely exposed in the original trilogy (except maybe the first half hour of Episode VI).

I have the most experience playing and GMing with Edge of the Empire, and I've only been playing/GMing about a year. However right now I have a strong urge to run, or at least play, in a Force and Destiny game. I've never had strong feelings towards Age of Rebellion, but I wouldn't mind a good campaign using that focus either.

To me, they are more setting books than rules sets, since the rules are the same across the three (aside from Obligation, Duty, and Morality).

I love the Edge, it's a fun setting where you can make your own stories and not worry about galactic politics, or get involved out of the blue (Han Solo style) if that's the way you want it.

Rebels never really had any appeal to me. Being part of this large organization that you don't control sounds to much like mission-hopping for my taste. Sure, you can work around that, but the general concept is not that appealing.

I am fairly excited about the Force. I've seen bits and bobs from the beta-book. What will make or break the book in my view is how well FFG have managed to balance force-users using the carriers in that book to "mundanes". In the old WEG the problem tended to be that the Jedies were underpowered at the start of the campaign but then jumped lightyears ahead of other characters as the game progressed. If FaD can allow me to GM for a group with both force users and non-force users it will probably be used a lot in my games. If not I'll stick mostly to the Edge concept.

I will be very interested in seeing how FaD handle the fluff around an entire group made up of force-users. Seems like a bit of a stretch to have that many force-sensitive doing stuff together as a group after the fall of the Jedie order (and really, even before that).

Oddly enough, I've never been interested in being a jedi or a rebel, even when I was a kid growing up with the OT.

It was always the seedy underbelly of the galaxy that intrigued me, not the mysterious jedi or the underdog rebels (although those would be my second choice).

I always played han solo or boba fett (or sometimes chewie) when playing make-belief with my friends as a kid.
I was never really interested in the computer games where you got to be a jed, and usually stuck with a blaster even in the ones where you could be a jedi.
I played through my first run of KotOR as pretty much a gunslinger, even after I found out I had force powers and that I was revan.
My first playthroughs of SW:TOR were of the non-force using classes (sans the Imperial Agent, since I'm saving the best for last).

It's just not my thing, I guess, to play the superhero or the underdog soldier.

That said, I have spoken with my playergroup and at some point they'd like to move on to AoR.
And that's kinda ok with me since adventure hooks will be a ton easier for me :)
So far, I've had some tentative "can't I be a jedi" requests, but I've said no with the motivation that the jedi are all but extinct and having one in the group would attract too much attention.
But, I have said they could become force sensetive at a later date, if they still want to, but I hope to stave off buying FnD until a few years later.

I'll break the trend. Force and Destiny is my favorite. The Force has always been my favorite part of Star Wars and I'm so happy to see its book released. The art is phenomenal and I was happy to get a few signatures in it while at GenCon this year.

With that being said, EotE is a very close runner up. When it was first released, It caused to set my lightsaber aside and take a hard look at the Scum and Villainy part of Star Wars. It was a very refreshing and welcoming experience. The feel of EotE is wonderful.

I've only had a few chances to play a pure AoR game, and I've enjoyed them, but it's not a style of game that grabs my attention.

EotE: 5

AoR: 0

F&D: 1

Thusfar, Edge is by far the most popular. However looking at the responses this may also have to do with the order of release a bit.

Well many of us don't have the FaD book yet so that might skew things a bit.

Yeah, I guess I did post this a few weeks too early. Let's see if we can keep this thing rolling until then!

:)

To nitpick over words :) I don't have a favourite CRB. They are just collections of careers and equipment, mostly, and I grab whichever is handy to look things up. The rest is just mix-and-match...you could easily use "Duty" in a criminal underworld setting, and use F&D careers wherever you like.

My favourite setting is EotE, even though 2 of 3 players are using AoR careers in an Edge setting. My favourite setting might be F&D, if it was set before the Empire and I could find players who knew enough about the SW universe and the nature of the Force to play with.

I would be surprised if EotE was not the most popular at the end of the day. It easily has the most approachable tone and open-ended setting of the bunch. You can bring anything into an EotE styled campaign and it'll fit. In contrast, AoR and FaD have much more definition, drama and gravitas that will necessarily narrow them a bit.

I don't know about the EU but as far as the movies go, we've seen AoR ink the original trilogy and something close to F&D in the prequels. We haven't seen the EotE setting on film and it seems, to me, the most "this is what it's like to live I this setting" setting. I wasn't even a Star Wars fan before EotE gave me that option. Star Wars was just some weird movie my dad made me watch. I'm still a "bad fan" (loving ewoks and Jar Jar like I do) but I can't least figure out why!

Are polls possible in these threads?

- I would say EotE first for me, as it feels more like my favourite parts of SW, like my favourite scene, the Mos Eisley Cantina and Jabba`s Palace.

- FnD at second place because of how it handles force-users way more interesting than just Jedi! In hiding and remnants of a lost era or untrained and unknowing. Rebellion Era is perfect for that and FnD represents what I loved most about SW as a kid.

- AoR is cool too, but the rebellion and the war itself never fascinated and compelled me as much of the backdrop it made and the seedy world in the shadow of the Empire.

As I only have 2 of the 3 (and one for only 24 hours), I cannot honestly say. I'm more along the lines of "There is A core rulebook, and it comes in 3 volumes. This is the Star Wars Saga we will play in. You start off with nothing and are on the run." The players will have choices to make that will have influence from Obligation, Duty and Morality. If I cannot get that in a single character sheet, they will have add-on pages. And... we're gonna have a blast. In time, I can look back at our campaign(s) and tell you what I have pulled more from, but we're going to be using all of it.

Going against the grain here and saying Age of Rebellion is my favorite. I'll talk an X-wing over a lightsaber any day of the week.

That said, in terms of being a CRB, Force and Destiny is probably the most beautiful and succinct rule book I've ever read.

And of course, Edge of the Empire has the coolest name.

I feel like Force and Destiny is the most refined of the three. The language seems more clear in places, for certain. At our table, we mostly use the Edge of the Empire book unless someone is playing a specialization out of one of other books. (We have an Ace/Pilot and a Force user whose spec I can't recall of the top of my head.)

EotE over Aoe and F&D. I like them all, but I have always preferred the smugglers, bounty hunters, cartels, and underground more than anything else.

Right, also... I'm a bit of a "mystical powers" fanboy. All the way back to 1977, I wanted to be Luke rather than Han.

Some of us "old-timers" actually had quite a bit of experience with the EotE setting before there was even a dedicated EU (i.e., pre-90s): the Brian Daley Han Solo trilogy, the L. Neil Smith Lando Calrissian trilogy, the original Marvel Comics SW series, the Droids cartoon, etc. Heck, as a kid, I definitely ran more action figure play sessions with 'bounty hunters all crammed into my Slave I hitting up all the space cantinas filled with random aliens' than 'Luke Skywalker in my X-Wing taking on Darth Vader and his fellow Imperial pilots in their TIE Fighters.'

Plus, Han and Chewie have always been my favorite SW characters.

So this is a no-brainer for me. I absolutely prefer EotE to the other two CRBs.

Love me some SW-style space western! (Add a little cyberpunk/Blade Runner-style spice and a dash of neon-energized Miami Vice flavor for good measure!)

[F&D feels almost sacrilegious to me, with the idea that a multitude of Jedi are running around in between RotS and SW ... when it is clearly stated that 'their fire has gone out of the universe' and that Luke and Leia are the 'last hope.' If F&D and its accompanying material were set during the Clone Wars however? Well, hey, that'd be a different story!]

I am in the minority, but my favorite is Age of Rebellion. In fact, I planned to buy Age of Rebellion, and only Age of Rebellion, but since Edge came out way before I couldn't wait and got that CRB first.

Now I have campaigns with different groups in both settings and while I love them both, I really enjoy the focus of the rebel campaign. My players like to work together to battle an evil government, it just is satisfying. PLUS, the promise of eventually taking command of a whole base or capital ship is just inspiring.

Of course, I couldn't resist and got Force and Destiny, starting a third campaign with a third group of players tomorrow in that setting!

My nominal CRB is EotE because that's the setting that I've always enjoyed most about Star Wars, with me watching the above mentioned Droids cartoon on a DVD, the adventures of Kyle Katarn unfold on Youtube, the currently airing Rebels animated series, and currently reading the KOTOR comic series. The bounty hunters have always been my favorite, holding no allegiance to anybody, doing a little good and a little bad. However, my GM uses all three books, so its interesting where things can go.

Force and Destiny is my favorite because being a force user is way cooler than the rest. Plus, the morality force you to think two time about your action and create interresting situation.

Edge will still have a special place in my heart.

Overall I prefer EOE because I love privateer style campaigns and it so far has a much vaster selection of ships in my favorite size range (Sil 5 and Sil 6)

But Corebook alone I prefer AOR. While its Sil 6 inventory is horrible and its selection of Sil 7 ships likely to be used by Rebels as bad if not worse (I have no clue what they were thinking when they decided to not include either model of Assault Frigate) it has three specs or spec and career combos where at least one, and often more then one, will be obtained by the vast majority of my characters. (Usually one in chargen and one or both of the others later.)
