Vassal Armada Tournament - Signups / Results

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

Okay, will be starting game today.

I haven't done ANY prep work, and have no idea what I should and shouldn't do against both a list of 3 Moff VSD's and VSD's with basically just gunnery teams. Any last minute advice aginst that kinda list, or against my opponent?

So are we getting an extention? Still havent been able to get a game with my opponent

Lets fight eachother :P

Its only been 2 hours of wait... he'll show up... right?

By the looks of it the earliest me and my opponent can play (because of work scheduals and time zones) is the coming weekend.

Do you guys want a battle-report or just numbers? I can ms-paint some images.

I don't think I can adequately convey how well "Second Chance" preformed, despite the circumstances, again!

So... Finished your game, Corvette?

(yay crap paint!)

would of been a 8-2 win, but we didn't know how accuracies that you got with a re-roll did, so we assumed they worked, and he locked down my redirect (after I used my evade, which seemed weird) and killed the CR90, causing it to be a 7-3 win. If I could of gotten just THREE more damage on that VSD... GAH! wish the game could last a 7th turn.

I also like how I managed to inflict a hull damage and 6 points of shield damage onto one Assault frigate in the first 2 turns via 2 obsticals! > :o

anyways, battle-report!

okay, end of action, the enemy had 3 victories engage a small rebel squadron of 2 frigates and a corvette

one of the frigates (Valor) immediately turned away from the front arcs of all of the VSD's, causing the overlap of an asteroid

that dealt a faceup damage card...

which cause massive shield failure, removing all fore section shields, which was at full (4 shields!)

thats is like hitting an additional 2 debries fields... :(

so that was pretty hard to stomach right out of the gate

then, next turn I reveal my engineering command and SPEND my veteran captain card for an engineering token

anxious to fire, I roll my broadside dice from the Valor, and score all blanks :(

then Rekkon tells me that my time for repairing step ends before the firing, and I must discard my dial because I already have the token from veteran captain

and I cant spend the token either, only before attacking

so, that was an engineering value of 6, aka 3 shields, that I lost

(I mean, I was in the wrong, but it would of been nice if he maybe told me or something, I haven't played Armada in a few weeks and have had a busy day, and stress caused me to mis-remember stuff like that)

then my maneuver carried my left shield counter over a derbies field as I angled away towards the station. I was then informed that the little half circle still counts as collision, and I take another 2 shield damage on the Valor.

At this point I put on my warface

My CR90 and main Assault Frigate, the "Second Chance", comes just BLASTING out of that astroid/debris belt they were moving through

and just opens hell on the closest VSD that they can find, which actually caused it to break formation and try to escape the withering fire

the other 2 VSD's proceed to chase the Valor (the one that took the damage from obsiticals) as it limps to the station

Second Chance gives the flagship a passing broadside as it pursued the Valor instead of the one it attacked last turn.

Which ended up causing massive shield failure and hull damage, causing fires and venting atmosphere into space.

That gave the Valor's crew hope, as they did damage control and rushed to their guns to fire upon that pursing flagship

The Second Chance, with the flagship now out of range, turned her attention to the original target and then felled it with a broadside as the CR90, the 'Spitfire', had harassed it and taken down most shields. Even with an engineering each turn, it could not tank enough damage to last against the fury under my guns.

However, the spitfire had gotten carried away in its attack, and had also received lots of shots from multiple VSD's. After taking the front arc when it could not escape, the advanced projectors saved it from being instantly vaporized by splitting damage across all the shields instaid of bypassing them and applying the crits directly to the forehead er hull.

the shields only spared it momentary, as it still succumbed to turbolasers from long range VSD turbolaser fire

Meanwhile the Valor, after repairing that crit with the station, and using repair and maneuver commands to evade damage/bring back up shields, was ready to stand and fight, and started executing an about-face

however the game ended before Valor could finish off the admiral, but left his ship hulked, with basically no shields and only 3 hull out of the original 10 remaining

that's like a cinematic version or something. The pictures are more accurate, but still.

Hmm, so I think I end the tournament with 24 points? Remarkable.

Next time I will take more than 5 minutes to whip up a list. Lots of upgrades that didn't see use at all!

I think the key to my success was making sure only 1-2 of their ships were shooting at me a turn. That fell apart this game towards turn 5 and 6, so that's why I lost the CR90, and ignoring that doctrine is why I almost lost my second game when I charged through the middle.

Although, it might also seem that the key is to hit as many asteroids and debris fields you can. <_< :P

I think that what list you fly is only part of the equation, feel free to meta/tear my list apart as much as you want, but I wouldn't recommend running it.

Assault Frigate Mrk2 A [second Chance] <-- Gave it Advanced Gunnery ALL THREE TIMES
-Paragon
-Mon Mothma
-Raymus
-Sensor Team
-EMC
-Enhanced Armaments
Assault Frigate Mrk2 A [Rage Against the Dying of the Light] [Valor]
-Veteran Captain
-EMC
-Enhanced Armaments
CR90 A [Pretender] [Spitfire]
-Leia
-Advanced Projectors
(299pts)
[The names in boxes is ship names I gave them. strike-through's are ships that were lost in action]
Everything not bolded is something that I will probably swap out
Things that I want, if I was to run this again:
-Point Defense Reroute on one AFMrk2 (and a gunnery team with it)
-Have a Ramyus+Tantitive combo instead of Leia. Or at least a VC.
Keep Paragon with Sensor Team and Enhanced Armaments. Sensor Team allows you to take a roll that you basically flubbed, and sticks and accuracy on it to let the hit or two through.

Why on earth did he move his VSD away? He would have had double front arcs on your para O_o

When you see Second Chance comin' after you, you'ed better run!

(hmm, I think the same thing kinda happened in the second game as well.)

Tallying up your points, Corvette, it looks like you won 92 - 53, which is actually a 6-4 victory.

And that is it. Here are the standings after 3 rounds. I wish we could have resolved the other top matches, but it is what it is. For those of you with draws, I gave the 2nd name the win across the board - coin flip decided it. Not that wins even matter.

Congratulations to doobleg who's impressive 19 points and 464 MOV in the first 2 rounds allowed him to limp into 1st place with a "could not play" 5-5 draw. Here is your prize, for your signature, sir.

Congratulations also to JJs Juggernaut who made 2nd place.

Correllian Corvette was the only player to go 3-0 in wins without a bye or a draw, so congratulations to him as well. Here is a prize for you!

If doobleg and Masseter want to play at some later time to see who would have won the whole thing outright, I'm sure we'd all love to hear about it / see the writeup.

Wow my MoV and SoS are really low!

Like, below everyone up to chilligan. Weird, what does that mean?

Whee! Thanks, Biggs, for putting this tournament together - I had blast! Thanks too to Ransberger for Vassal Armada - a faithful port of the original system that has amazing functionality. Kudos, sir!

Final thanks to all of my opponents for the enjoyable and challenging games, and to the Armada community as a whole - I really enjoyed reading all the comments on this thread, and look forward to playing you in the (hopefully near) future.

Sorry if that came across like a victory speech, but I woulda said all that either way. Definitely up for giving Masseter the satisfaction of finishing our game sometime soon. :D

Darn that bye and its low MoV!!! Good games with my opponents and lots of fun all around! Thanks for organizing Biggs! I'm looking forward to the next one!

Ditto.

I also found Armada is much more unforgiving with mistakes. You make a big mistake in a game, it counts heavily in the entire tournament.

Was fun overall, but I wish I had the opportunity to get 3 games in.

Hmm, 10th place isn't bad after I suffered a 0-10 defeat the first round :)

Can't wait for the next one

I dunno, I managed to deal myself 6 shield damage and a face up damage card in the first two turns in my final game. :V

Oops

Be flexible and constantly readjust your situation and what you need to do.

Circle or the shield wheel counts as colision with ships only and when overlaping squadrons

Edited by Microscop

I feel 7th is highly ironic given the 7 pixel overlap is essentially what cost me the second game xD

Just to point out if either myself or MattShadowlord had pulled 8-2 or higher we would come first :P (If we got to play our 3rd round game)

Edited by KovuTalli

Not exactly Kovu, you guys got a 5-5 tie for not being able to play.

Ah I didn't see the third round had been added as a 5-5, My bad!

Microscop, the shield dial does count for all overlaps.

Overlapping occurs when a ship overlaps an obstacle, squadron or another ship.

What is a ship you may be asking yourself? Well the Rules Reference on page 10 bottom right under Ships says:

"A ship consists of a ship base, a ship model, a ship token, and a ship card. All components must match the ship’s type, and the name on the ship card must match the name on the ship token."

Under obstacles on page 8 bottom left:

"•A ship or squadron or squadron overlaps an obstacle if part of its base is on top of the obstacle token after moving (excluding activation sliders). Ships and squadrons can move through obstacles without issue."

The only time I don't think the shield dials count is for moving off the board.

I was just interested because I viewed them as accessories and that the base was a perfect rectangle because we don't measure from them. Shows what I know. That first few turns I was getting my nose ground off as I kept paying a high price for my mistakes. But that motivated me to win, I sat down and focused and remember my doctrine, and stuck with it.
