An interesting find for squadrons

By Intys Rule, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

p6 RRG, ENGAGEMENT , If line of sight between two squadrons is obstructed, those squadrons are not engaged even if at distance 1 of each other, though they can still attack each other.

I haven't played with squadrons in my fleets for some time, but this is new to me. Basically, if an X-Wing engages a Tie Bomber by moving within Range 1, I can "disengage" my bomber by flying another squadron between the bomber and the X-Wing. Then I can fly my bomber off to somewhere safe and start bombing ships. This gives a whole new meaning to the concept of "Fighter Screen"!!

I just might fly a few bomber builds for this!

Also note that LoS between squadrons is closest-point-to-closest-point (p7 RRG LINE OF SIGHT )!!

But I don't think squadrons ever obstruct LOS....

Ah, there it is, RRG p.7, Line of Sight

• Squadrons do not block or obstruct line of sight.

However, you could drive a ship into the gap and obstruct LOS, freeing up the squadrons....

Yep, I did that once. Had the other guy plough a Gladiator into my Furball so my Y-Wings would be released.

Oh.... yes you are right. :(

I guess back to my ships then....

Something you can do, though, is fly your bombers onto an obstacle, as even if the enemy squadron is in B2B with you, you're not considered to be engaged.

(RRG p8: If line of sight is drawn over an obstacle, the attack is obstructed even if the bases of the attacker and defender are touching)

Just an addition to the above, it is also possible for a small base ship to land on the station just perfect and have all tellow dots obstructed, therefore only allowing B-wings to attack it. I don't think it is a position a ship will end up in on purpose, but it did come up by accident last night in a game.

Huh....does this mean that squadrons shooting at other squadrons through an obstacle must deduct one die from the attack?

Yup.

I believe this also affects counter, so counter 2 becomes counter 1 if the attack was obstructed.

This.

A bomber on a token can shoot straight past fighters attempting to engage them.

I like it. It's thematic, too. If a squadron was hiding in a debris field and you tried to go in after them without an accurate reading, they'd be able to fly right past and disengage at will.
