Wait - what?!?

Yeah, we don't have THAT kind of pen and paper games! Probably for the best...

Different kind of *cough* "roleplaying."

Maybe we need more female game masters... *sigh*... why do mine only want to be players?

Back on topic! Because I'm all out of bubble bath.

I personally see no problem letting someone switch careers - exactly once. The only real benefit to doing so is getting to take different signature abilities once the new book comes out. They would have to already have a specialization of the Career they would be going to. The way I see it, all they get from a min-maxing perspective would be potentially up to 50xp saved - assuming they bought every in-career specialization at in-career prices. Picking up the new specs would already get you any Career skills those came with.

That said, I'm usually running the games - I haven't had a chance to play long enough to really do any branching out, much less regretting my initial choice of career. So, we'll see if my mind changes long-term.

Bottom line - what does it hurt if they aren't switching willy nilly?

With new books coming out with new careers and Sig Abilities, I would be willing to entertain the notion of respecing a character if something comes out and the player goes "Man, that is MUCH more in line with the character I envisioned!" Take your points, rebuild your character, call it all good.

Or the other policy I have is that all players get a respec in the first 5 or so sessions of a new campagin, while everyone is still feeling out their new characters. That gunslinger just not working? Go retool the character and go.

However, I'd never cater to player whim. You have to come up with a real good reason for the respec, and you really only get one.

In the end, I'm flexable because the name of the game is fun, and playing a dud character is no fun.

If there is nothing officially, how do you handle it?

If the character build didn`t fit what the player had in mind or what the character turned out to be, I would consider letting him or her reinvent the charater and build from scratch. Only the mechanics would change (and might even fit the character better), while the story, personality and everything else would still be the same. I might allow this if the player really wanted it and had a good explanation and reason for doing it. I would not allow it just to try out different mechanics and character types.

I should really learn not to browse forums when I'm tired
