A not so typical list.

By herbaljoker, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So i have been seeing a ton of 2 ship lists lately, and while they have all been very effective I don't think I want to run one. I play inperials, and Soontir Fel IMO seems to be pretty much auto include in most imperial lists.

So with that being said, I really want to run the baron with your typical load out of autothrusters, stealth device, and PTL. But what are some other ships that could run really well with him. I have The Decimator, and I love that ship but I want to kinda do something different than Soontir Fel and a big ship.

I currently own 1 defender, the imperial aces, 5 TIE's, 1 Phantom, 1 more interceptor, the Fire spray, and the Decimator. What kind of effective list do you think I could run with these ships, keeping in mind I really don't want to run a 2 ship list.

5 ties (4 academies, 1 stabber of backs)

go hard and don't look back

The thing with Soontir is he's not a very synergistic or supportive kind of guy. His capability improves inverse to the number of ships on the table (the less there are, the more powerful he becomes). So generally, he doesn't like being part of a swarm or going up against them (he can do it fine if you keep him away from the majority of ships and are good at avoiding the inevitable block attempts, but that takes a lot of practice).

Against my better judgement, I ran Soontir at Gencon with PtL, title, autothrusters and stealth. I seriously regretted it. The stealth did absolutely nothing for me. Against most shots, he can arc-dodge or use his prodigious tokens and tank through em just fine. The three times he died in 6 games were: 1) my screw up allowing him to be blocked then shot to death with no tokens; 2) getting fed crits from a vader decimator; and 3) being one-shotted by IG88B w/ HLC + FCS at range 2 (again my bad---should've BR back to range 3 for autothrusters, but I was tired by that point and somewhat ill).

These are all situations that stealth device absolutely does nothing to help out Soontir. They also happen to be the best ways to kill the baron. So I don't see the point taking an upgrade that doesn't protect you against the things that kill you, and only helps you against the things you can survive without it. I will be taking shield upgrade or targeting computer from this day forth!

I might try the list with the baron teamed up with a TIE swarm. Hopefully you get the swarm in the opponents face and then hit from the flanks with the baron

The two squads I fly Soontir Fel with are 1) Soontir Fel, Carnor Jax, Imperial Shuttle, and 2) Soontir Fel, "Backstabber," and two other TIE interceptors. My favorite is the shuttle. The squad looks like this:

Soontir Fel (Push the Limit, Autothrusters, Royal Guard TIE, Shield Upgrade) [36]

Carnor Jax (Push the Limit, Autothrusters, Royal Guard TIE, Shield Upgrade) [35]

Captain Yorr [24]

95 points

I change the way I build Captain Yorr almost every time I fly. Sometimes he has Fire-control System and a 3-point crew like Rebel Captive or Mara Jade. Other times I just add Darth Vader and save the 2 points for initiative. I really like this squad archetype. The shuttle gets a chance to hit hard when the opponent is trying to destroy your interceptors. Shield Upgrade really makes opposing ships toting Darth Vader crew pay for attacking my fragile TIEs.

The other list I like, which is probably not top-tier, but I had loads of fun with involves 3 TIE interceptors.

Soontir Fel (Push the Limit, Tageting Computer, Royal Guard TIE, Autothrusters) [34]

"Backstabber" [16]

Lt. Lorrir (Autothrusters) [25]

Saber Sq. Pilot (Opportunist) [25]

100 points

This has gone through many iterations. At Nationals last year I switched Lt. Lorrir out for "Fel's Wrath" and ended up 37th or so on the first day, solidly in the middle of the pack. I think for that one I also traded out the Saber Sq. Pilot for a Royal Guard + Push the Limit for more staying power. Sadly, if I chose that again now that Autothrusters are out, The Royal would get the upgrade instead of Lorrir. I just really like Lt. Lorrir. Probably to an unhealthy extreme. And now that I look again, you could just have Soontir Fel with 2 Royal Guards + Push the Limit and "Backstabber" for a pretty wicked squad.

I loved running him with a doomshuttle and whisper. I think three named 'ceptors or two and a phantom would be fun.

These are all great ideas thanks for the input. Just started playing this game and found this community. Everyone here seems to be super chill and know what they're doing with their squads. So it is super appreciated.

All right so I was thinking of this 3 interceptor list. Be brutal if necessary.

Soontir Fel - autothrusters, PTL, title, and stealth device.

Carnor Jax - title, expert handling, hull upgrade, and shield upgrade.

Turr Phennir - PTL, and autothrusters.

if you wana be extra unique, take Soontir + 5 Ties but replace Soonts for AT + SU Carnor

How about Carnor Jax - PTL, title, hull upgrade, autothrusters.

Howlrunner and 4 academy TIE's

Howlrunner and 4 academy TIE's

Somebody ran that fairly successfully at Gencon. Not sure where they placed in the end, but its not a bad idea at all. It forces your opponent to choose between Carnor or Howlie as their first target. If they go after howlie first, carnor denies focus/evade so they have no defense against your return fire (allowing more damage potential). If they go after Carnor, then you have Howlie's re-rolls, (so more damage potential). Either way you can make your opponent really hurt for taking out that one ship...

I used to run this build before Autothrusters with Hull Upgrade instead...but it was always a blast in a casual setting and I never lost with it (out of only four games).

FEL'S TRAINING MISSION

PILOTS

Academy Pilot (12) x 3

Delta Squadron Pilot (30)

Soontir Fel (32)
TIE Interceptor (27), Royal Guard TIE (0), Push the Limit (3), Autothrusters (2)

You could put Targeting Computer on Fel...or Flechette Cannon on Delta. I love having the low ps defender to get his 4K in without being blocked (if it's the right choice) and have the option of moving everyone but Fel in whatever order necessary.

I always had a blast.

Expert Handling Seems redundant on Carnor since he already has the BR. I would go VI with thrusters and shield. then maybe Hull on Turr as well and VI instead. PTL doesnt really work well with Turr's ability, plus you want him shooting as early as possible.

I've tried Expert Handling, and he just misses something. Here's an idea: instead of Hull Upgrade, give him Experimental Interface. That way he can Focus or Evade, then use Experimental Interface to trigger Expert Handling to shed a Target Lock and Barrel Roll out of arc. What do you think?

EDIT: Obviously he wouldn't remove the TL of the guy whose arc he dodges unless that's the only lock on him. Just screw with their offense in a fight to stay alive, but keep a defensive action as well.
