Imperial Star Corvette, Vigil-Class Scratch Build Project

By Caddieshack11, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hey everyone,

After hearing a few people talk about scratch building a vigil-class corvette but not actually seeing any progress, I decided to take up the torch and begin a project of my own. The final model will be to scale with the CR90 and will be made mostly of styrene with possibly wood used for some of the internal structure. While working out the blue-prints for the final build, I am doing a mock-up out of cardboard and hot glue. I find this is the best way to work out any kinks and trouble shoot any tricky areas before diving in! Feel free to follow my progress and post any ideas/tips you find handy as the project unfolds! Here are a few pictures showing some of my pre-build progress thus far:

Word of advice from someone who made WH40k cardboard titan: leave details like guns for the end:) I know that feeling the you want it to start looking awesome early but it gonna just make it harder later:)

Other than that im looking forward to see progress.

Thanks for the advice! I keep having to hold myself back from getting too detailed and remind myself that this is just to nail down my blue prints and specs for final build.

So I ran into a problem area and decided to restructure the interior a little. There were some tricky angles that I overlooked when first drawing things up but I think I have them sorted out now! Here is a picture of some progress on the revised mock-up:

Sorry it's been awhile since I'very posted anything on this thread! I just went through a move and have been building some furniture which has taken up a lot of my free time. I have definitely not given up on this project and was able to work a little more on the scratch build this week. Here are some pictures of what I've been able to get done:

Look at the size of that thing!

Look at the size of that thing!

I know, right!? I want it to be to scale with the CR90 Corvette and absolutely dwarf everything else on the table. I think it still makes sense that a Vigil-Class would be engaged in a dog-fight/small scale battle and I would like to figure out a gaming mechanic that would make use of its tractor beam. I would like to eventually have it sit just high enough so smaller ships can just fly under it. It's funny because at 255 Meters, it's sort of in a class of its own: not large enough to be a frigate but really not small enough to be considered a conventional corvette.

You could get a Nebulon B Frigate as well, it's in the same size range. For truly epicness.

why cardbord? why not plastic card stock? just wondering.. looks good so far..

Thanks Swedge for the feedback! After I finish the scratch build, I will use mostly styrene for the actual model. I will try to update regularly once I start building with Styrene and share my blueprints for anyone else wanting to make their own. Cardboard is what I have available right now for the scratch build, so that's what I'm using :)

Finally got another chance to work on the ship and was able to figure out the core dimensions for the bridge. This took WAY longer than I expected but I think it's pretty darn close (and isn't the millenium falcon dish fun!?!). Recording everything in my notebook and looking forward to starting to work in styrene! If anyone has feedback or is wanting to collaborate on this project, let me know! Pictures:

Looks good. Keep it going

It's been awhile since I've been able to post or work on this project but wanted to give a quick update. A few weeks back, I reached out to Ansel Hsiao (mastermind behind the Vigil-Class Corvette) and he very graciously shared some original CAD files with me! These files are going to make this project much easier and faster once I find the time to start that actual build. So big shout out to Ansel for moving this project forward! If you haven't checked out his work before, you can go check it out at http://fractalsponge.net/ . He is a very gifted designer/modeler and such a big contributor to the Star Wars community.
