New Raider Preview

By DailyRich, in X-Wing

why not preview of Armada Raider, FFG? <_<

not that there won't be many interested in new epic goodness, but this **** thing's already out :(

on an unrelated note, I love how the aggressive "Assailer" and "Instigator" Raider titles and 100% defensive :P

also inb4 "a sailor?" jokes

Why not more spoilers for anything Armada, I have to say I am starting to feel pity for Armada players. They have bee getting nothing but silence from FFG.

Don't feel pity for us, we still have a great game to play with what we have, just feel pity for our wallets

Where did you find this article? It's not showing up on the news feed when I click the "news" link up at the top of the page.

Well for the moment wallets are actually being spared, at least for the Armada side. ;)

I'm buying more armada. woe is my wallet.

Stego, did you move to armada?

At first I was a little nonplussed by these titles, but then I realized that they are about on par with the titles that come with the CR-90. It's a shame, really, because the GR-75 titles are AMAZING!

If I had to choose my favorite title for the Imperial Raider it would have to be the Assailer. I know, I know, people have been mentioning that it's situational, but I use Reinforce way more often than Recover. I'll grant you that the Instigator will make Recover a much more valuable action, but I still like Reinforce. So how do you take advantage of the Assailer title when ships are just going to want to close the gap? I have a couple of thoughts. One idea is to slap an Ionization Reactor on it, so that you punish ships that get too close. They'll either rush you and deal with the ion effect, or they'll try to bait you with a couple ships, and keep the rest at bay. It's not the best protection, but it's an option.

Another option that is kind of give and take is to fly a cheap Lambda-class shuttle or two out in front with Tactical Jammer, so that the Raider get an obstruction bonus to its agility when it defends. If they try to take on the shuttles, that's great -- it gives your Raider more time to fire. If they try to outmaneuver your shuttle to get a clear shot, well guess what: the Raider now has a clear shot, too. Personally, I only have one shuttle, so I'd probably throw my requisite Captain Kagi out there as the sacrificial lamb. Maybe, maybe I'd put Sensor Jammer on him and take advantage of Grand Moff Tarkin's ability to take an enemy Focus token away. Seems like a silly way to waste Captain Kagi, though.

OH! Lightbulb! What about Captain Oicunn with Tactical Jammer here? If he is in contact with an enemy (or two or three) he is not a legal target, so they might as well shoot at the Raider, but now their shot is obstructed. Interesting...he may like Intimidation here.

Okay, so maybe these aren't the best ideas, but here's the one I think will end up being the most effective: a swarm of TiE fighters. Seriously, you just clog up the space lanes to the Raider and prevent the Rebel scum from breaking through. I have 7 TIEs, but I'm sure 12 would be even more effective. Of course, with that many TIEs, is the enemy really going to be concerned about trying to attack your Raider? In this instance Impetuous, and its free Target Locks may be a more viable answer.

At first I was a little nonplussed

Does anybody ever get plussed?

Or gruntled? I think I've been gruntled once or twice.

Here's how such a squad might look.

Raider-class Corvette (fore) [Assailer, Ion Cannon Battery, Ionization Reactor] (62)

Raider-class Corvette (aft) [Rebel Captive, Ion Cannon Battery, Engineering Team, Tibanna Gas Supplies] (67)

Captain Oicunn [intimidation, Ion Bombs, Extra Munitions, Tactical Jammer] (49)

Saber Squadron Pilot [Push the Limit] (24) x 5

298 points

As discussed above, Captain Oicunn flies ahead to provide cover for the Assailer. He can also drop his Ion Bombs to keep the rebel fighters at long range. Intimidation can soften some targets, too. I like TIE interceptors a lot, so I decided to bring 5 Push the Limit Sabers to harry the opponent. The Raider is a completely different animal from the CR-90. Where the Rebel ship wants to broadside the opponent, the Imperial Raider wants to fly head on towards the enemy (or maybe at a slight angle to take advantage of overlapping arcs). I opted for an Engineering Team to earn more energy on those straight maneuvers. Ionization Reactor punishes fighters that break through to close range, and I figured with all the ionizing going around, Rebel Captive would fit nicely. Though the Ionization Reactor may like Mara Jade more; I'll have to think about that.

Not a perfect squad, and I've not included any bombers, but it's something I'd definitely put on the table. It also has 2 leftover points, so it has room for improvement. However, with all PS 4 ships, the ability to choose Initiative cannot be overrated.

Naw, those are too easy for a team of bounty hunters to board, take over, an loot.

Ok, yes. I want it. When I saw it in the most recent issue of Darth, I got excited. But I think it's too big for this Game. :(

Right? And what organic life-form do I have to torture to get Dr. Aphra and 000 crew cards?

Whenever we get this beauty as an expansion?

Plz DAT.

I'm so looking forward to when this comic comes out in anthology book form, so I can buy a bunch of episodes for 15$.

Also, raider titles.... MEH> Not at all as aggressive as I'd want for the biggest ship in the game.

When I saw the circular docking ring on the side, I guessed it as about two or three times the size of a YT-1300, not including the engine at the back.

But I must admit I'm warming to the Raider.

My issue was always it looked long and flat. But seeing artwork for it, it actually has some mass to it. Still not 100% sold on it, more like 60%, but once there's some battle reports showing it off I might decide to get one.

Truth is, I've found the photographs of gamers to be much better than FFG's.

I like your take on the squad, but I'll never have 5 copies of the TIE advanced title :) I guess lots of people will have Imperial Raiders lying around, so it's not hard to find one to borrow.

Captain Oicunn is built a lot stronger in your squad than in mine, which is great. I'm just a little leery about beefing up a Decimator because I fear the CR-90's Single Turbolasers which have the potential to seriously damage any Decimator (doubling an agility value of 0 is not helpful). The only other thing I'd point out is that Oicunn has retained the Tactical Jammer, but you've opted for the Instigator title instead of the Assailer, and I don't know how much the extra agility die granted to the Raider will help without the advantage of the Assailer's dice modification.

The only Decimator I'd bring to Epic would just be a lowly Patrol Leader with Vader on it to go after HVTs. Keep it away from the CR-90 until shields are down on something. But really it would just be cannon fodder to distract my opponent.

But I must admit I'm warming to the Raider.

My issue was always it looked long and flat.

Really? My biggest issue with it has always been that it doesn't look flat enough. It looks like a big ice cream cone instead of a proper star destroyer-esque pizza slice.

I figured out what to spend the last two points on: Tactician. Now I've effectively made any close range attack suicidal: at range 2 they take a stress token and get blasted by Ion Cannon Batteries, at range 1 they take a damage and an ion token from Ionization Reactor. They'll either stay at range and be thwarted by the might of the Assailer, or perish in a futile attempt to dispatch the warship at close range. Wicked!

If you've never been appointed then you're not trying hard enough...or definitely trying too hard.

And don't worry about your mind. Our Alien Overlords could care less what you think. Or if that you can think. They just want you for your body.
