A Hundred Times In a Life a Coward Dies.
You should download and play Armada on Vassal with me.
Here's the bare minimum you need to know to do it.

Hi Matt, I have a section you might want to add. It is a HUGE timesaver to only need to get the cards and ships out once.
How to save your squadron's ships and cards:
Click on the 'Pieces' button. Drag your ships, squadrons and upgrade cards from Pieces window to any area of the map. (I usually put mine neatly in the grey margin area at the bottom, but anywhere will do)
Go to FILE, and click "Begin Logfile". Give the file any name you will easily remember (eg 'VicVicGlad' or 'MothmasSwarm')
Select all your ships, squadrons and cards (click on the map, hold the mouse button down while you draw a large box around them)
Press Control-D to Delete (yes delete) all the pieces at once.
Press the Undo button (curved arrow at the top left, under 'File')
The deletion will be undone, and the squadrons, cards etc will now reappear.
Go to FILE, and click 'End Logfile'
And you're done.
How to load your squadron's ships and cards:
Go to FILE, Load Continuation
Pick the file you saved earlier (eg VicVicGlad.vlog)
Press the play button (top left, next to Undo) until the replay shows the part where your entire fleet, cards and squadrons reappear after being deleted during the recording.
And you're done.
Ooooo, now that is a bit I didn't know about.
Definitely adding it to the guide.
I've played quite a few boardgames on vassal, haven't tried it with Armada, my biggest concern was how the maneuver tool would work or if it would work at all. It's way different than moving counters on a hex board. Going by this tutorial it looks functional and I think I'll do some vassal games to work out the bugs in my next tournament fleet. Thanks for the tutorial.
edit: with 70 vassal users logged in for Armada in the past 24 hours doesn't look like I'll have a problem finding an opponent.

Great, thanks.
Bumping these instructions up since Felforlife was asking how to save and load a fleet
Ahh this is great. Ive tooled around with this trial and error type. Now to find so e opponents
Can't get this to work unfortunately. When I click the map I get the map, but no way to select the pieces. To select the pieces I have to close the map, but then I have no way of dragging them onto the map.

Vassal tends to work best when you have multiple windows open within the program.
When starting a game I'll have the map open, and the pieces window open. Click and drag pieces from the pieces window to the map to get them onto the table.
As the game gets underway I'll close the pieces window unless I need it for something, and open up the dice window, and my "hand". (The numbers across the top) which holds my damage deck, and where I'll change my command dials during the command phase.
Yeah, you'll need to re-size the windows in order to use them at the same time. I've usually got the table open at about 2/3 of the screen, with the chat room as the other 1/3. Pieces / Dice / Damage Deck go over the chatroom 1/3 as I need them.
