An all X-Wing List?

By DeGriggs3, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Looking for thought on an all X-wing list. To me, the X-wing is one of the most iconic ships in SW and Im sad to see so few of them on the table tops. I currently own two (i was out fo the game for a while, but Im coming in full force) and looking to expand. Since so many waves have come out since I left, what upgrades and such are X-wing fliers finding helpful out there? i know its biggest weakness is it's cost, but I like to believe there is still life in the ship. Any thoughts to get a new guy going?

Wedge Antilles (29)
Opportunist (4)
R2 Astromech (1)

Luke Skywalker (28)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R5-P9 (3)

Wes Janson (29)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R2-D2 (4)

Total: 100

You'll need to come up with a formation that works for you, but typically I'll stick Wedge in the front with Wes flying behind him, and put Luke on either the left or right side (depending on the initial deployment). Their high Pilot Skill lets you place them after most others have already been placed.

You won't always want to use Opportunist, since Wedge may not always be able to perform a green maneuver (though the R2 Astromech certainly helps) and Wedge needs to Focus as much as possible.

I placed R2-D2 on Wes since he will more than likely be your opponent's first target, because he creates the synergy.

Because of Luke's native ability, you're more likely to still have an unspent Focus token during the End Phase, so R5-P9 is really great here.

The biggest weakness is a combination of cost and its ability to do **** else apart from jousting

Compared to the tie fighter's dial + roll (or indeed the bwing) the xwing is simply a stiff ship with no real redeeming qualities outside a few character pilots and its iconic look.

Any 4 X list will be strictly for fun, the ship simply isn't that good and it's got no way to transcend its stats

The pilots that can transcend the ship's stats are Luke (great actions independent defense), tarn (combo with r7, solid against 2-ship builds), and Biggs (unique, trollish ability)

X-wing 'fix' will bring the iconic ship back to the forefront (hopefully!). Unfortunately, no idea when that will happen. Most likely in the new year, when Ep 7 has had a chance to wow/disapoint (depending on your pov)

Wedge is still powerful though, but squishy. Keep him cheap, protected and master your jousting skills and he can do alright for his points. If you do a search, I'm sure you can find plenty of 3 and 4 X lists----there's been quite a few over the years (even some recently)

I have not flown ONLY X-Wings in awhile, but something like this might be up your alley:

TARN WEDGE

100 points

PILOTS

Tarn Mison (25)
X-Wing (23), R7 Astromech (2)

Rookie Pilot (21) x 2

Wedge Antilles (33)
X-Wing (29), R2 Astromech (1), Push the Limit (3)

If you are only going to get a third X-Wing, there are some good lists for 3 out there as well, like the one frbfli posted above.

I highly recommend running one or two x-wings with some other ships to form more of a cohesive rebel unit. Also, if you do not have the Transport, it is wonderful for the newer X-Wing pilots (Tarn Mison is one of my favorites, if you can tell). I flew Luke and Tarn along with two z-95s and an A-wing in my local regionals tournament and did OK. I had a blast though, so it was a win for me overall.
