Will the Raider get you playing Epic?

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

Yes. Never played epic before but the prospect of playing cinematic storytelling missions with the force which is usually more likely to field capital ships now actually being able to field capital ships in the game is an opportunity too cool to let go.

Will also establish a house rule in which capital ships will be given separate Armypoints to be equipped and fielded properly.

No. It just doesn't interest me. I like the dog fighting and arcs on the small ships. I don't want a big ship in the middle clumsily wallowing around. I also don't like that they're out of scale.

I'll do one game with my friend when he gets the Raider just so he gets to use his epic ships once, but apart from that... no.

Yes. I have always thought that in Star Wars, the Empire brings the bigger ships, and the Rebels try to take them down using their fighters and guerrilla tactics.

So although I don't own a CR-90 (because I don't fancy a Tie Bomber/Fighters vs CR-90 game), I love the idea of a squad of B-wings/Y-wings with a fighter screen of A-wings and X-wings, trying to take down a Raider.

Added fluff that you can have Vader/Emperor on board of the raider and have a 'mission' where the Rebels found out that an important character is traveling from planet to planet in a raider, and things get really interesting.

So yep, I will definitely buy a raider.. once I can get one at a reasonable price :-P :D

I guess that depends on how badly you want all the cards that come with it.

I'd guess you could probably pick one up sans X1 Titles and Emperor card for about 50% off retail

It will get me playing more epic, I already like to play epic

Yeah, this out-of-scale-decision annoys me, too, I have to admit. Especially, since it didn't and doesn't seem necessary (especially with the Raider, which was designed for this game).

Alas, at least the Gozanti will have the right scale...

I really enjoy larger 150-200 point games so I am excited for the raider to finally get here. I got my brother the cr-90 for his birthday and played a couple matches when he flew down. We only had my small collection plus the corvette so we could only field 250 points. In both matches the corvette dominated and i really like the added tactics of managing energy. So now I think my next purchase is going to be the raider even though I could get a bunch of small ships for the same price

Yes! I have played Epic several times, usually Cinematic, but I'm dying to give my Imperial fighters something to protect I'm also very, very excited for the cinematic missions in the Raider.

Yes.

Trying to retro-fit a Tantive into an Imperial vessel never had any appeal for me, and neither did Rebel vs Rebel action. But now, truly cinematic scenarios await; and I'm looking forward to making my first Huge ship purchase.

Oh yes. Especially because I can use ships/combos that wouldn't be feasible in a normal 100 point game, and the image of 2 epic ships during it out while bombers and fighters scream between them is very much a Star Wars picture.

Absolutely agree. I was always going to get a Raider for the cards but the thought of epic play with 2 capital ships is what made me buy a Corvette. Literally counting the hours till I can pick up the Raider (84)

Do you mean playing more? If so, then yes.

Playing more, I hope! I like the format, and the Raider looks slick. I've only had a few games of it so far.

Of course, I also need to finish painting my CR-90...

So wish I had a community here like some of you do.

I have to resort to vassal mostly to get games in

Have never tried playing epic on vassal, but it is something I don't see players play much of

Would anyone want to play epic on vassal?

Problem is it take pretty long :(

I'll happily give you an epic game on Vassal ...... just as soon as I figure out how it's supposed to work.

6 months ok? :)

Yes...while it's fun to spam bombers against a corvette and escort, can't wait to go toe to toe with my own capital ship....even if it's only a corvette sized one.

Do you mean playing more? If so, then yes.

well I was more trying to get a feel for whether the release of the Raider was likely to get people into Epic who hadn't played that format before.

But if it makes you play more Epic that's good too :)

The Raider? No. But the Gozanti cruiser is going to be an auto-buy for me. That will very possibly push me to buy other Epic ships. To this point I've avoided buying the Epic ships almost on principle (I didn't and still don't like the idea of selling tournament legal cards and ships bundled with $40 - $90 of tournament-illegal cards and ships that aren't as popular) but I think it's likely I'll want huge ship buddies for my Gozanti once I get it.

FFG - you sure seem to know how to work your way into my wallet.

My friends and I regularly play in the 400-500 point range so another epic sized ship is eagerly awaited.

The goz I can wait for until prices drop or there's a sale just like with the transport I don't need more ties.

Coming from a competitive Magic background, it's not as shocking to me as it is to some to need some almost prohibitively expensive components to play at the highest level. In fact, I appreciate that with X-Wing there's no temptation to bleed myself dry, $4 at a time, hoping I'll get (reeeeeeeally) lucky and open a booster with the expensive card I need. On top of that, it was really the sweet models that attracted me to X-Wing in the first place, so even though I've never played Epic I get some value in addition to the cards from just having the ship on my shelf. That said, I also enjoy the cinematic aspect, so it's freaking sweet to finally have some Imperial huge ships. But as far as that goes, it's the Gozanti's functionality as a carrier that has me the most stoked...

I've wanted to play epic for a while and now the rest of my local group is excited about it because of the Raider. Hopefully, if the excitement falls off after awhile, it'll be rekindled by the Gozanti. :)

Imperials whos flag ships was the massive and imposing Imperial Star Destroyer not having a Huge ship was a big game ender for Epic play. Now that there are at least 2 factions with their own huge ship players are now going to see Epic as a more viable options especially imperial players.

But Epic is not as refined as X-wing with 3 factions one that still does not have an epic expansion. Not to mention that the fear of income inequality was so high that the huge ships are very underpowered so epic still needs some more touches before it moves to anything other than a casual scenario game.

Epic is broken. You simply don't have an incentive to field huge ships, because huge ships are ineffective, especially against fighter with high agility. Maneuvering with huge ships is boring and the energy management is no thrill either. The raider does not change this. Imperials have the edge, because the have better agile ships. Intercepting bomber before they can harm the capital ships? That was made the computer games interesting. Don't bother - you can't stop a bomber before it reaches its target and why would you? It is wave 7 and torpedos are still useless.

The Gozanti? Any imperial Captain that lets rebels come into x-wing-range without having launched his fighters walks the airlock. Even Armada with its much larger scale has no mechanism for launching and recovering fighters and for a reason.

"Broken" is a little wide of the mark - especially considering that a pair of well equipped GR-75s will ruin even the most determined swarm's day when it Jams, Slices, Rams, then repairs its damage, Recovers its shields and Reinforces to make itself unhittable to a 2 dice attack.

The Corvette is a little undewhelming for sure but a couple of well thought out upgrade cards in future Epic waves should sort that out - it's worked for (nearly) everything else.

Marinealver is probably closer to the mark with "not as refined" - arguably because not enough people have played Epic to give FFG the incentive to refine it.

I'll probably never have time to play epic, but I'll gladly buy the ships anyways. They have stuff for regular x-wing and the models look great.

Yes, already played some Epic before but it was rather one sided each time, always in favour of the Rebels since they didn't need to bring Bombers or Defenders for the anti-huge ship action

Bringing the Raider should mitigate that...
