X-wings - I want to play them....

By Dressy, in X-Wing

I never see anyone playing x wings at my store or even on YouTube these days.

I've tried playing them with my son, but they seem so underwhelming.

Does anyone have a competitive (not op) list they could share please?

Sorry for being a noob. Just want to give them a go as well as provide a challenge to my opponents.

Should have added, at my store there are lots of Brobots, horn/dash, Fel/with something's.

Luke Skywalker w/VI & R5-P9

Wes Janson w/VI & R3-A2

Wedge Antilles w/Predator & R2-D2

Or

Tarn Mison w/R7 Astromech, Shield Upgrade, Prot Torps

Luke Skywalker w/R2-D2, Draw Their Fire, Shield Upgrade

Biggs Darklighter w/R4-D6 & Hull Upgrade

The first list is all offense... Wes shoots, strips tokens, stresses... Luke shoots, and Wedge delivers the hardest hit last reducing the opposing ship's AGI by 1 with 1 reroll...

The 2nd list is all about funneling damage to Biggs who can reduce any damage suffered over 2 by taking stress... Luke pulls crits for him which he regens with R2-D2... Luke and Tarn both as they are set up are monaters end game... This list is all about slow playing for the long game...

Hope you find something that works...

I still enjoy playing a squad of XWings at times! We play 150 pt lists and I think that helps us play pretty much whatever ships we want to and the builds are always more balanced!

I wonder if 100 points isnt too limiting and doesnt allow for all builds to be more balanced?!?

General consensus, as I understand it, is that X-Wings cost too many points for what you get against the tier one lists you're talking about in your meta. So you're not alone in finding them underwhelming. I have, however, seen a pair of rookies alongside Dash or Han with reasonable success.

I've done very well with this

Been using it for awhile.

Tarn mason

R7

Fletchet

Gold Squadron

Ion cannon turret

Btl title

R3-A2

4 bandits.

I've also seen Han and luke work pretty good together.

I've played 3 Rookies + E'tahn with Stealth to some success, a guy at my LGS plays a XXXZZZ swarm and it makes big ships cry, that is if you can get arc on them. Good luck vs brobots though, those things are insane...balanced and counterable...but insane all the same xD

Thanks for the replies.

Howie, nice looking lists, unfortunately I don't have VI as yet(waiting for Houndstooth?). I will have a go with the second list though.

I'm one z short for that list Shirako, but can easily pick one up. Thanks.

I play them all the time. Try to play named pilots, as their good special abilities help make up for the overcost. Some good named X-Wing pilots are:

- Tarn Mison

- Wes Jenson

- Wedge Antilles

- Luke Skywalker

- Biggs Darklighter (mostly in a support role)

Even Garven Dreis has his uses sometimes.

Hold on let me just highlight something

Don't you know that all competitive lists are OP? :o

Okay jokes aside. but for the meta there are only 2 kinds of lists. Good lists and all others. There are some strong lists out there. The most powerful X-wing pilot is Biggs, now many people try to invest points to keep him alive but Bigs is supposed to die so it is probably best to not invest anything on him.

Hobbie with R3-A2 is a nice control build and becomes a stress sink. Although Wes with R3-A2 might be better on the control and just give him VI.

As for tanks well there is Luke which makes a good tank as well as Tarn with R7.

So there are a few builds out there with X-wings. Sure the stat line may pale in comparison with other ships so the rookie and red squadron pilots are not the ones to pick but the pilots especially in the core set are still viable. The only thing though is that the meta favors big point fortress ships escorted by throw away ships that don't give much points in return. B-wing are a nice tanky escorts that take a couple of turns to knock down. X-wings can still be a good all around ships but a good jack of all trades tends to not be that good in turn based games.

I've played an XXYZ list to reasonable success (I've lost 3 out of >10 games with it), winning even against Dash/Corran and Soontir/Chiraneau. It's Biggs with R4-D6, Hobbie with R3-A2, Dutch with R7-T1 and an autoblaster turret, and Cracked. The idea is that Hobbie can always de-stress himself from droid usage by spending a TL, and Biggs can always save the focus for defense and still modify his attacks thanks to free TLs. The list is relatively immune to blockers as you can get free actions in the combat phase, and if an arc-dodger manages to stay just out of arc and range 1 of your ships, Cracken can always give Dutch a free TL+boost action to close in on the glass canon and nail it with unavoidable hits. A list I really like and have ran to success a few times is:

Prototype A-wing, Refit, Thrusters.

Jake Farrel, Proton Rockets, VI, PTL, Title, Thrusters.

Rookie X-wing

Tarn Mison, R7, Stealth device.

Comes in at 99 points.

I know I know, "Stealth Device on an X-wing?!" Yes but when you (hopefully) have them reroll 3/4 damage down to 1 or 2 that extra green can come in handy!

We just played a 300 pt game (with 3 players per side), and the rebels had Wedge w/ predator and Biggs (among others like YWings and BWings) on the table. It took the imps quite long to finish Biggs (some lucky rolls in the rebels favour involved of course), giving all the others free time to go crazy on actions and focussing on offensive playstyle. Wedge was still on the table in the last round, and he dealt quite some damage during that game. While it wasn't a competitive game with those 100 pt super lists it was still nice to see the X Wings doing well among all those shiny new stuff. Btw, the imps brought nasty stuff like Decimator, Whisper, Braxler, TIE Swarm, Fel.

Wedge with predator and Biggs are still viable in tournament builds, I would say. I can also see a beefed up Luke having some use.

The hardest part for me when playing rebels is that they lack the mobility (engined up B Wings, and A Wings aside), so I have to remember to just fly conservative and not try anything fancy - point the nose at your opponent and shoot. No being super smart with your moves.

HMM... I wonder why anyone other than a turnie, would ever play a 100 point game.

300 plus is where it's at!

So fly em the named pilots are still strong it's the generics that really suck bantha poodoo.

I play defenders allegedly the most overpriced ship that's really easy to kill because it has no evade action, that doesn't stop me winning with them.

Dev team knows they need a boost its on its way but nothing is stopping you using x-wing's right now you just need to be smart about it.

X-wing is not nearly as bad as you're making out. It's only problem is that it has an old design, and newer ships benefit from hindsight and more modern mechanics.

Wedge still murders ships, and I really like Wes too.

A rookie with R2-D2 is one of my favorite ships to fly. It either gets attention which leaves your big boys around longer or it gets ignored and leaves a healing ship for late game. IMO it's a win win for the guy using it.

They are good in bigger games or scenarios where moving around quickly and with fire power is a good thing. A-wings are fast, but only 2 attack dice. B-wings are too slow. X-wings are mobile and dangerous.

Oh come on, you can fit a decent GR-75 in their, too, right? :) I have a great Epic Squad I've been dying to try out with Tantive IV, Quantum Storm and 6 Rookie Pilots.

CR90 Corvette (Fore) (71)

CR90 Corvette (50), Tantive IV (4), Han Solo (2), Single Turbolasers (8), Sensor Team (4), Weapons Engineer (3)

CR90 Corvette (Aft) (58)

CR90 Corvette (40), Dash Rendar (2), Single Turbolasers (8), Engineering Team (4), Tibanna Gas Supplies (4)

GR-75 Medium Transport (45)

GR-75 Medium Transport (30), Quantum Storm (4), Chewbacca (4), EM Emitter (3), Backup Shield Generator (3), Expanded Cargo Hold (1)

Rookie Pilot (21) x 6

This tactic has been dicsussed before, but the idea is for the Rebel Transport + EM Emitter to run interference for the CR-90 by obstructing attacks, while the CR-90 sits at range and pounds away with it's primary weapon and Single Turbolasers. The Quantum Storm is made to survive so it will take them time to wear it down. Hanging back are the X-wings whose role is to attack any enemy ships that close in on the Tantive IV where ti can no longer shoot them. I really think Rookies can hold their own in Epic, although the B-wing always tries to outdo it.

I've had good success with this:

Wes Janson (29)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Wedge Antilles (29)

Opportunist (4)

R2 Astromech (1)

Luke Skywalker (28)

Opportunist (4)

R2-D2 (4)

Total: 100

That is a solid list. The Transport is a good little ship.

If you want to have fun and be thematic at the same time try:

Luke

Lone Wolf

R2-D2

Engine Upgrade

Han

MF Title

Lando

Chewie

Push The Limit

Engine Upgrade

99points

or swap Lone Wolf for PTL on Luke for 100pts.

Not going to win many tournaments but is really fun. And If you get good rolls with Lando you will really annoy people.

Try to have a little fun with this. :P.

Etahn A'baht (32)
Draw Their Fire (1)
R2-D2 (4)
Biggs Darklighter (25)
R5-D8 (3)
Wedge Antilles (29)
Push the Limit (3)
R7-T1 (3)
Total: 100

Why not go with Luke instead of Etahn?

Etahn I find is better The more ships you have

With draw their fire, luke has more shields, and better defense ability.

Could probably throw shield upgrade on him as well.

Sure, a swarm is nice with Ethan, but this is fun and different while Luke, Wedge, Biggs has been done to death. :P.
