Damage tracking

By Comrade Cosmonaut, in Game Masters

Hello, all. I have a question about something I go back and forth on quite a bit.

When your PCs take damage from NPCs, when you roll additional uncanceled successes, do you add in additional damage or no?

I'm really leaning toward not doing it anymore, but I'd like to see what others do.

Yeah, I add in the uncancelled successes, definitely. Combat is supposed to be quick and dangerous.

I do see that argument.

When I don't do it, I count successes beyond the necessary net one as an advantage each, and I use it to trigger qualities, or hamper the players. Suffer strain, or add setback dice, or pass boosts to other NPCs.

As written the uncancelled success increase the damage, if you want to activate qualities, pass boosts to other NPC's etc you use Advantage.

I absolutely add all the successes. Players don't die if they go above their wound threshold, they're just out of the fight, so there's no need to hold back from pummelling them. Not to mention that I don't use a GM screen but roll out in the open, so all my players would immediately know if I was holding back. It sets a bad tone at the table if the players think the GM needs to coddle them through encounters.

I do see that argument.

I add the successes to damage against PCs. They win too much.

On a more serious note, I do it to show them that, when they win, they do it on their own merit. I'm not pulling my punches to make them feel better.

Converting Successes to Advantages is more lethal then just plain damage; it will make crits more likely, and it will totally break Auto-Fire!

Don't forget (like I did) that Auto-Fire has to be declared. My players took me to task on that one.
