The app of the game of the franchise

By Pac_Man3D, in X-Wing

How about this: an official app version of our beloved X-Wing miniatures game?

Would you be interested in such a thing? The reason I ask is because I lately find myself spending lots of time putting new lists together and wanting to try them out when I have no friends nearby (or at all, for that matter). I was thinking that an app would mean players could give a quick road test to new lists privately against an AI (or online) without going through all the faff of setting up a game at home.

This should go without saying, but of course it would pail in comparison to the genuine article - but as a supplement for use on long journeys or when you're on the crapper for extended periods? Could be interesting.

What do you think? Heresy? Feasible?

Cheers

Would love it. would probably even pay for wave expansions. Multiplayer could get frustrating but it would be a cool solo game against a cpu or a pass and play.

I don't think you could fit x-wing on a phone (maybe a tablet? idk don't own one of those)

I'd expect a game of XCOM quality (only in terms of graphics, obviously, since X-wing isn't even close to the same); not something that you'd find on Vassal (which I can imagine being a right prick in the rear to manage on a phone)

I'd have the choice of isometric with cinematic interludes (like XCOM) or top-down view.

Well for it to be "official" it would have to come from FFG who is already in rather sophisticated terms with the copyright owners Disney. That requires contracts, negotiations, heck ever look on the packages to see who made the games, it even includes a Lucasfilms approver. That right the give production credit to a person who works for Disney to either says yea or nay. And with not too long ago a wave of C&D on X-wing related apps going out I don't think an unofficial one will be at best.

FFG is working on developing some sort of tournament software and right now that appears to be the extent of their software investment. As far as putting X-wing on a phone or tablet I really don't see much. Half the benefit about playing a miniatures game is you get to see the miniatures on the table not on some screen you can't touch.

I think Vassal does an okay job of creating a digital environment for X-wing. Other than that I would rather FFG focus on what it does best, table top games.

I believe EA has the rights to star wars games

Not sure about mobile market.

Have you tried vassal?

Require a pc but it's the best thing when you don't have anyone around to play

There are a host of SW mobile games so I don't think any blanket licenses were sold in that regards.

I don't however think X-wing would work via mobile.

a) time for 1 game exceeds what is realistic for a mobile game

b) x-wing cannot efficiently be played asynchronously (ie by email). Dice rolling alone is a back and forth engagement

At least, those 2 factors matter to me. Battlelore: command does not support asynchronous gameplay and FFG still made that. But I do wonder, if things like moving were automated, would games get down to about 30 minutes?
