I like the Gozanti but.....

By Xander Krane, in X-Wing

.....it has the potential to put me off the GR-75 and CR-90.

Why?

Because the Gozanti is the right size and they are not. While scale differences in Armada don't bother me, I like the universal 1/270 scale of X-Wing. That being said, I was originally going to add the CR-90 to my collection after I bought a good little fleet of ships and large ships. But then came the Gozanti.

Expect to see at least one Gozanti in my Empire collection. Possibly more than one. It is my favourite Epic Ship miniature, with CR-90 second, GR-75 third and the Raider is my least favourite.

I don't want another "what epic ship I'd like to see" thread. Not that I've spotted one recently. Instead I'd like to say I hope FFG create more 1/270 scale Epic Ships.

I'm currently scouring through Wookieepedia when I've time to waste, hunting for smaller big ships. I thought no bigger than twice the size of a Gozanti, which oddly enough includes the GR-75.

So far I like the IVP-1 System Patrol Craft for the Empire. I nickname it "the hedgehog", it is 120 meters compared to Gozanti 63.8 meters.

Also at 120 meters is the DP20 Frigate, aka Corellian Gunship, is my choice for the Rebels. I won't be cruel and suggest a new GR-75 at the right scale. Perhaps the 100 meter Action IV would make a suitable alternative.

That is as much as I've got so far.

What do you think?

Should future Epic Ships be chosen from among those that won't need a different scale?

Have any of you got the CR-90 or GR-75 and find they look fine alongside X-Wings and Millennium Falcon?

Basically, yes. Fighters look beautiful next to the Corvette (and Raider); Large ships feel a little bit big, but it's not bad enough to bother me.

Star Trek: Attack Wing (as an example of games with scale problems) has a problem where ships that ought to be about the right size aren't, and sometimes Model B is bigger than Model A even though Ship A is larger than Ship B. X-wing doesn't have the problem, even in Epic.

Yeah I'd agree with Vorpal. I think the CR90 and GR75 look ok on the table with fighters. With large ships they look a bit off, but not too bad.

Would of been nice to see a full sized CR90, but would of cost a good bit more so I'm ok with the decision they made.

I feel the true test will be a CR-90 face-to-face with a Gozanti

Well the Gonzati is 63.8 meters long and at 1/270 scale it should be about 9.3 inches long, so it will not be technically bigger/longer than the other Epic ships, it will be obvious that it is in a different scale. I know it's heresy to say, but I feel the same way about the Raider and feel like it looks "like a scaled down" ship as opposed to a ship at the right scale. I don't like it, but I love the Gonzati.

I've been a little bit concerned about the size between the Gonzati cruiser and the CR-90. But I agree with everyone else above CR-90 looks great next to the small models, a little off with the large ones especially the Millennium Falcon.

But as long as the Gonzati is smaller than the CR-90 I think it'll be okay and fun to play.

I feel like the only odd one out is the GR75, which at its scale isn't much larger than a MF at 1/270. What bothers me especially is the tiny cockpit, the CR90 doesn't have features I can relate to in terms of scale.

The true test might come with the ghost. Put the Ghost near the CR90, compare with SW Rebels screenshot when they appear docked (or is that a different variant?

The command bridge of the GR-75 sometimes looks a bit out of place when held close to an X-wing or a TIE cockpit. It's the ship that looks the most downscaled, but once you're playing you soon forget that.

CR90 looks beautiful and not out of place in the slightest. If anything it looks better because the docking rings are the same size as those on the Falcon and Outrider. Raider looks to be the same as the CR90 in that respect.

But as long as the Gonzati is smaller than the CR-90 I think it'll be okay and fun to play.

Gozanti'll be GR-75 base. Picture about transport size.

The product page gives you it next to two TIEs for size comparison.

I actually like the feel good scale vs actual scale. To be honest if we could find a feel good scale for the Star Destroyer I would be all for the Star Destroyer in Epic than having an impossible scale Star Destroyer which would never be played.

Now X-wing does respect the scale of the models way better than some games (looks at Star Trek: Attack Wing <_< ) still I understand that in a table top game you have to respect your constraints as much as any other projects. Some of the Nebulon B frigates that have been shown on this forum might fit the feel good scale even though their are at a much smaller scale than the other epic ships. Still I think they can still find their way into epic.

Well I feel much better from peoples comments.

Raider is just.... what!?....so wasn't bothered about that.

Transport I was interested in, but can live without.

Knowing the CR-90 is will still look good is enough feel good factor for me. It's a big investment. Price of a fleet of smaller ships.

I do maintain a hope that future ships will follow the Gozanti example and be built to 1/270 scale.

I know this is an old post but was looking to check the Gozanti's to scale before getting one, yep I only want to use 270 scale ships personally. With regard to the GR-75, I just pretend it's a GR-45 and everything's peachy - 60.75m, perfect!

Well... let's hope you don't find out about the size discrepancy of the Ghost

I love the fact that must of the ships are to scale, but as cool as that is I'm happy to have the Epic scale ships in game as is. For the sake of playing I can handle the size difference. At true scale they would simply be too big.

I would have thought FFG would create the IVP-1 before the showed up with the Raider; OTOH I like the Raider.

I sort of expect the Action VI or Jabba's Space Yacht to be the Scum's Huge ship.

I would love to see the CEC Gunship in the game. I also think it would make a great "any Faction" epic ship.

The "relative scale" ships still look sweet on the table top. Interestingly, the Kenner Blockade Runner toy is more to scale and now to me it looks WAY too big.

The true test might come with the ghost. Put the Ghost near the CR90, compare with SW Rebels screenshot when they appear docked (or is that a different variant?

The viewing window on the front of the CR90 really does a lot to make it look 'correctly' scaled next to the fighters. If the thing was the same size ratio, but much larger, the window would look bizarrely huge.

So, FWIW, it looks decent next to the Ghost, IMHO. Maybe smaller than it appears in the series, but not badly so - and, as noted, the proportions of the details on it (windows, hatches, guns, etc) look "right" at the scale it's at.

Is that corvette on top of a GR-75's base? I can see a second set of epic bases without the template and it's bugging me now that I spotted it. Edit: Spotted the GR-75 base. I think what really confused me was the ghost base on top of the cr-90 base.

Oh, yeah, sorry - I usually stack all the base tokens for a ship WITH the mini (as you can see on all the other fighters). Not a problem on the other ships using the 'huge' bases, either, as they only have one base tile each.

Ghost was the first problem, in that it uses a 'thicker' base like the huge ships, only it has multiple base tiles. If you try stacking them all on at once...the stand won't fit in place. So had to find a spot to toss the extra tile where it wouldn't get lost. ;-)

the minute scale issue in xwing is so minor i dont even notice it.

Startrek Attack Wing has a scale issue. THAT is scale problems. Miniature games arent going to be 100% accurate, even 40k has some scale issues when you look at the art vs the models or the fluff vs the models. But Startrek Attack wing shows a Borg Cube being BARELY bigger than the Enterprise...WHAT! lol

I love my GR-75, even if it is collecting dust because I rarely get to play epic. It does look a little out of place next to the falcon, but given the Falcon was scaled differently than the rest of the large ships anyway, it really isn't that noticeable, and in either case it's not an eyesore. The GR-75 also looks Fantastic next to little ships I might add.

Ahhh, the Imperial Patrol Vessel.

I loved making little swarms of them in Empire at War; I'd love to see it as an Epic ship! (A Scum perhaps?)

I have a Raider so I know what you mean: I don't get it out for use much, but next to my fighters it makes my squadron feel like a fleet. ^_^

The Falcon is scaled correctly.

I have not gotten to fly my Gozanti yet! I'm quite frustrated. I've started my Casual podcast and I've got so many missions and HotAC games going on that I just haven't had time for Epic yet. I really want to go through them. Well, that and family killed almost a month of gaming for me. I should be smooth sailing this summer....except for a week for vacation (or Holiday as they say abroad).
