Do you think they'll introduce a 3rd faction?

By Rocmistro, in Star Wars: Armada

I think they will do 2 new factions once episode 7 stuff comes out, but those will likely be fully compatible with the 2 existing factions. First Order can pair with Empire, etc.

Only after introducing the ships that will be coming out of the the next trilogy. FFG will likely ride the crest of Star Wars' popularity and S&V ships are not exactly recognizable to many people.

That has not stoppoed wave 3 and onward from being super popular in X-Wing.

I am interested to see how they incorporate the episode 7 ships. As Crabbok said, maybe they will do it as two new factions to handle the time continuity issues. I hope there is some mechanism for keeping the fleets coherent.

I'd also say that most of the "Expanded Universe" stuff is complete rubbish and I fervently hope they avoid it.

I'd rather they keep the factions relatively straightforward and introduce new product either as discrete new factions (Mandalorians, pirates, scum etc) or as variations on existing kits than continue to fill out the factions with EU junk. Apart from the aesthetics, as I fear has happened with Xwing once you reach a certain point with continual expansion of new ships in a faction you lose the authenticity of the faction and the game devolves into gimmicks.

For example, rather than bringing out weird and silly new capital ships for Imperials, bring out an alternate Imperial star destroyer kit - a post empire version or an Emperors Guard version etc.

The idea of excluding the EU/Legends capital ships from Armada is insane. Neither side would have any medium base ships if you exclusively used ships from the movies and cartoons.

I don't think a third faction is planned, and I suspect Armada is planned out further than X-wing was. I say this based on the upcoming wave two squadrons. If a Scum and Villainy expansion was foreseeable, nearly every one of those ships would be saved for it.

You say that but we have the Victory Star Destroyer and that is from the EU

Exactly. Once Wave 2 hits there will be 3 capital ship classes seen in the OT that aren't in the game, and 2 more from Rebels. If you swapped the EU ships from Armada out for those to make the game onscreen ships only you would basically have nothing left for future waves besides new ships from the ST, other new films, and Rebels unless you bring in the ships from TCW and the PT that haven't appeared in Rebels or the OT and those would only last a couple of waves

Lyraeus, darlin', that is what the rogue said :P It's Ophion that might need the reminder. -laughs- As of right now, we have no original trilogy ships in the Imperial dockyards.

But it is true and sorta bears reiteration: as much as EU designs have been hit and miss, that means there's some real good 'hits' along with those misses. And then again, not every capital ship from the official media was a gem. Not every ship from the original trilogy was widely recieved (or even commonly known). I like variety, and thus I care not from whence the ships flow, only that they do.

I don't much like those fancy-pants battledragon ships that that such-an-such a league has, you know, the two rotating pie plate ship: but I'd still wouldn't mind a third faction eventually. Not that I'd know what they'd look like, but if they have some Z-95's, all well and good. Though, like Crabbok and Ophion, I sorta wonder if Episode VII-IX will be new factions or just some semi-integrated entities. It'll be interesting to see how integration is handled.

Post Scriptum: Bloody rogue ninjas, 'tis unfair to the rest of us, it is!

VASD may have started as EU but it was in the Tarkin Novel so it is now Canon.

I sure hope not. That would mean bringing the uglies from the Empire At War computer game.

What Uglies? Non of the Zann or Hutt or Black Sun fighters I recall from EaW were Uglies and I don't see any listed in its Wookieepedia article.

You dont have any OT ships in the dockyards because all there ever was WAS the ISD. Its not my fault Lucas thought to spam those and TIE fighters.

Correct. Uglies are hybrid fighters like TIE balls mated with X-Wing wings. . . . *shivers* ugh.

I think fist order will be a good test for if we'll see multiple factions. Personally I'd love for this go like 40k, STAW, and Firestorm Armada where there's many factions and rules for combining fleets.

Ripilbus + Dimok vs Imps!

Bring it on you child trading wierdos!

Ohhhh subfleets. . . I see where you are going with that. . . I think that would be MUCH better than a third faction. . .

There was plenty of desire and demand for scum-aligned ships in X-Wing with all of the bounty hunter craft. That makes sense... but what Scum and Villany capital ship is in as much demand as any of the Star Destroyers or Rebel MC series? Any one single scum ship as popular as the Liberty, for instance?

Only thing I can think of is the Wild Karrde, a transport. The Errant Venture is just an ISD, which you can house-rule to remove four dice from the pool before firing or something to represent it accurately.

I'd rather see new craft from Episode 7 in the popular factions before we get to Scum and Villany.

The Keldabe. . . Yes, I dont care. Boo me to oblivion but I LOVE THAT SHIP! It was well designed. It looks beefy, it looks dangerous, and it is **** sexy!

Keldabe
Aggressor (the Madelorian Star Destroyer, not IG 88s ship)
Crusader

And those are just off the top of my head from EoW alone. Plenty of great EU ships put there, and as X-Wing has proven as long as they are interesting and have the Star Wars logo tacked on, people will buy. Heck they already have with the AFmk2 which I am sure fell into the light demand department before it was announced for this game.

The nice thing about the Pirate fleets is that you could get the same ships and have them get new paint jobs as well as print out new cards with various different upgrades that the original faction versions did not have. Oh and new titles.

It most certainly did not as there were no shiny, new trilogies at that time.

Given that FFG's marketing model consists of just four new ships per Wave, they would do well to include the ones in the new trilogy first and not some obscure S&V ones the same way they exhausted all the canon ships for X-Wing before delving into the EU.

Honestly I don't know how many new capital ship models TFA will have but I doubt it will be more then one wave's worth which means any wave between the TFA wave and the next movie will need to use Legends or new ships.

AFAIK there has never been a Star Wars movie that introduced more then 4 capital ship models and most only introduce 2 or 3.

Don't forget that Rogue One will be set just prior to episode 4. You can assume more new ships from that as well the following year.
