DR-45 "Dragoon" Calvalry Blaster Images?

By OddballE8, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

dont just count the stuff beyond the shroud. the barrel would be everything beyond the trigger. it just might be inside the other workings.

Doesn't really matter since the weapon is too short to accomodate a long barrel inside the casing.

But since the description specifically states "a long-barreled blaster pistol", I'd say they mean on the outside of the casing, not inside.

uhhhh being a gunny long barrel refers to the length of the barrel. One does not say a colt long slide has a short barrel even though the barrel is entirely inside the slide. So I don't find your logic solid. Also based on what I am looking at above that gun is a foot long. Which is really long for a pistol. For comparison the DL-44 is much shorter at around 7 inches.

I still wouldn't describe that as "a long barreled pistol".

A large pistol, sure, but not with an emphasis on the barrel length when describing the looks of it.

"Long barrelled pistol" sounds like it has a visually long barrel to me.

Besides, the pistol you're showing there is hardly much longer than the DH 17 blaster pistol. So I certainly wouldn't describe it as a long barreled blaster because of that.

Sure, you could say that my choice wasn't longer either, but it sure does have a visually long barrel.

Looks nice! Needs a longer barrel, though, since the description specifically states "long barreled blaster pistol".

If I had not already shown the image I used to my players, I'd possibly go with yours.

I played around with making the barrel longer, since that’s really the opposite end of a rifle barrel that’s sticking out. There’s a lot more barrel that could be pulled out.

However, it didn’t look right to me with a barrel much longer than this. The receiver is from a 12-gauge shotgun, and that plus the barrel as it currently is, well that’s already pretty long. Any longer, and the barrel will stick out beyond the bottom of the holster/stock, while still leaving the pistol grip sticking out the other end. I did carefully check placement and size to make sure that the holster/stock would actually function in both roles.

At the end of the day, this is just my first rough draft of what I think it might look like. To me, the Dragoon not only has a long barrel (for a pistol), but a thick one as well. Those thinner barrels like you find on most .223 or .308 rifles just don’t look right to me for this application. And I couldn’t find a receiver/pistol grip combo that looked better than this — and I tried virtually every single possibility.

You’ve got to go with what looks right. And what looks right to me may not look right to anyone else. YMMV.

does it have a barrel extension?

I’m claiming that the Augmented Spin Barrel is the thing that looks an awfully lot like an MP5 suppressor on the right-hand side of the graphic. ;)

Yeah, i can see that it's from a shotgun, and that's also what makes it look like short-barreled to me, since I know for a fact that the barrel only starts after the bolt, meaning it's extremely short in this case :)

BUT, you could also just dispense with the entire housing (since you don't need shells) and make the housing end right after the trigger guard, pretty much.

I'd also make the barrel thinner, but that's just me.

After all, it's not a shotgun ;)

That's how I'd handle it, at least.

But like I said, it's a good design, and a good starting point.

EDIT: Threw this together. Rough sketch, but you get the drift. Barrel still as thick, but just showing what I mean by shortening the housing.

That’s pretty good! I hadn’t figured out how I could shorten the housing and still make things look right, so I’m glad you did this.

Thanks!

No worries.

Like I said, I'd still make the barrel thinner, since it still looks like a shotgun more than a blaster.

Maby make that rail-looking thing right before the barrel extend further back as well?

I'd say remove or hide anything that is remeniscant of a shotgun, like the tapering off of the housing above the grip, things like that. Stuff that players will surely pick up on and go "hmm, that looks like a shotgun".

Anyway, keep working on it until you feel satisfied.

I got my image and I'm happy with it, so I'm sticking with that one, but if you can make your own instead, more power to ya :)

There are images for the DD6 blaster pistol, upon which the DR-45 is purportedly based - if you haven't looked at it already.

Yeah, I saw that one, but the only images I found were from SWG, and I rarely use those since many weapons were duplicates there. (especially those that didn't appear in the films)

Hmm, no. I wasn’t aware of that. Do you have a reference for this?

That’s a reference for the DD6. Do you have a reference for the fact that the DR-45 is derived from it? I’ve seen the comments by the guy who wrote up that description that he based it on the concept of the Colt Dragoon (as mentioned earlier), but somehow he got that weapon confused with later weapons where the stock actually could be used as a holster.

But I don’t recall seeing anywhere what weapon the DR-45 was supposed to be based on, with regards to other in-game weapons.

I say do one based on the DD6 with a longer barrel and stock and spin barrel like you did... I think that would look awesome

Only the weapon description:

"The DR-45 cavalry blaster by Merr-Sonn is one of a line of convertible blaster carbines marketed to vehicle crews and beast riders. Based on Merr-Sonn's popular DD6 blaster pistol , the DR-45, also called the Dragoon, is marketed as an all-in-one weapon providing the portability of a blaster pistol with the range and stopping power of a blaster carbine. To accomplish this, the base weapon, which is a long-barreled blaster pistol, can be fitted with a detachable polycarbonate shoulder stock and a range-extending augmented spin barrel to turn it into a respectably effective blaster carbine. The stock and barrel are fixed to the base weapon with sturdy quick-release mounts that allow an experienced user to mount or dismount the attachments quickly and easily. While not particularly common, Dragoon cavalry blasters are slowly finding a following among members of the Rebel Alliance who value their versatility, reliability, and stopping power."

Huh. I have no idea how I missed that. Thanks!

Does the range of the Dragoon change in carbine mode? (Sorry, I don't have SoT).

I am keen to do a similar custom job for my Gunslingers DL-44s (as per https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/197105-dl-44-attachments/)

No. The profile remains the same, it just changes it from Ranged (Light) to Range (Heavy).
