Q' About Flight controls in SWBattlefront

By R22, in X-Wing

I originally posted this in the SW:Battefront Squadron Trailer thread but it's turned into more of an "XBox1 vs. PS4 debate" and my question is more focused on gaming mechanics because I haven't owned a console in awhile. But this game is calling to me and I have some questions.

1. Is it just me or did the A-wing seem to have targeting cross-hairs that auto-followed within a small center area of the HUD while in 1st person view? Oddly enough I'm kind of okay with it given the idea that A-wings had swivel lasers (cannon blah, Disney changed it, blah, whatever). But if that's true for all fighters I'd be bummed.

1b. Like many people, I'd rather see flight simulator controls than arcade style flight controls. Can anybody comment on this? Arcade style to me means the ships basically function like cars, going left or right, with an awkward ability to go up and down ALL THE WHILE MAINTAINING THEIR Y-AXIS. That's what gets me. A ship turning left doesn't turn left like a car. It typically rotates it's X-AXIS somewhat so that the intial "turn" is more of an upward or downward dive made along the newly rotated to Y-axis. For example, if you hold your right hand out in front of you palm down and turn right to model a ship, it doesn't stay palm down while your hand moves right. Your pinky drops, your thumb lifts, and your hand is now palm "left" with your now quarter-clockwise rotated hand moving left or "up" along it's original axis. Seeing ships turn like cars and only slightly rotate just blows the realism for me, so much so that I'd even accept an awkward "auto" rotation gimmick put into the flight controls that rotates the ship into turns . It also means pre-programmed maneuvers at the push of a button or button-combo (like that K-turn suspiciously looks to me). Now I'm okay with the 1st person being somewhat limited since there's no way you'd pack in all the functionality of X-wing vs. TIE Fighter. I accept needing to fly in mostly 3rd person but it would be awesome if:

a- the ships flew like ships, not cars with flexible horizons

b- the ships each had discernible flight profiles, not generic tweaks like X-wing = slow, A-wing = fast, maneuverability for each the same.

c- ships like the Falcon could host multiple players with others at the turrets

d- PLEASE GOD LET THEM FLY LIKE SHIPS AND NOT CARS. I don't expect this but it would SOOTHE MY SOUL something AWFUL.

Okay, I'm done. Insights would be appreciated.

Dat K-Turn right at the beginning!

Yeah.... about that.

Red Leader: "...Red Squadron, stay in attack formation..."

*RED FIFTEEN IMMEDIATELY DOES A K-TURN*

Red Leader: "....yeah, thanks Red Fifteen. You're a great help."

Maverick has had a hard time engaging ever since goose died.

FTSGecko. Dude. Way too soon.

I hope it's more like a simulator as I love that type of controls, and have gotten very good at it in Battlefield (though probably out of practice)

But to appeal to a wider audience and it is star wars, won't surprise me if it's more arcade style.

Usually makes for fast pace games which this also looks like

Skip to the 12:30 mark and you can see an X-wing in flight. It seems to be handling the way you want.

It looks a lot like Battlefront 1 & 2. But I've don't know if I've ever played a flight sim specifically, so idk what the difference is.

Well A-wings are supposed to have swivel cannons (up to 60 degrees in the frontal arc.). So the auto lock in 1st person makes sense.

It seems the ships fly the same as the did in the 1st two Battlefronts.

Although my big question is will there be playable bombers? I want to still be able to fly Y-wings and TIE bombers at least, and the B-wing as well if they can add it.

You might want to take this to the off topic section, since it is, well...off topic.

According to a friend that worked at EA earlier this year, the flying feels rather bad with a keyboard and mouse. The ground combat is the solid part of the game. He did not have the possibility to test with a controller.

Isn't the targeting assistance a thing on consoles?
This might be just in console version, while on PC no auto target

its a Battlefront game by EA.

Anybody hoping for anything even remotely simulator-like is going to be very badly disappointed. I hope i'm wrong....i still play all the X-0wing games with my stick today!

But i will literally and genuinely bet real money that this will be very arcadey, and not at all like the X-Wing series or other "simulators".

Pretty much EVERYTHING feels bad when the controls are a keyboard and mouse.

Except for RTS games, FPS games, all MOBA games, quite a few RPGs and so on.

Flying is anything though i agree tends to suck with KB+M.

At the risk of scuppering some potentially lucrative bets....it appears I was correct:

Verdict: very fun, absolutely NOT in any way a simulator style game.

You should try Warthunder. It's great with mouse.

And I'm talking about "between the trees" and "under the bridge" kind of flying.

I was trying to fly with joystick, but mouse gives much more sensitive control..

I totally forgot Warthunder, good point! Though i kind of suck and only play arcade :(

Even xwing alliance and xwing/tie fighter had target locks. This is the same thing, allows you to focus on 1 singular target amidst all the other madness. I don't think it still allows your lasers to track them from what I saw and read about it. It's also mainly for missiles or torpedoes. Without that lock they won't follow the target. As far as flying goes you'll need a dedicated flight sim for that, I really don't think they will incorporate mechanics like elite dangerous into any Star Wars game judging by all the games in the past as well as they would want a wide audience. Those types of hard core flight sims with flying mechanics like you state are for a very narrow market of people. It could work but I think they would keep it more like the xwing series. Also this game isn't restricted to side to side movement. You can fly up/down whatever you wish. They even stated there are power ups below you on the ground you can grab. I don't think it'll be the best dogfighting experience ever but I think it'll be decent. Also here's a decent article written by an xwing alliance and xwing/tie fighter guy http://arstechnica.co.uk/gaming/2015/08/star-wars-battlefront-fighter-squadron-mode-isnt-quite-x-wing-but-its-****-close/

I might be alone on this, but Battlefront has NEVER had good controls for vehicles, especially air vehicles. The most common sight in a game is a guy running to a helicopter or jet and crashing it inside a few seconds...

We have around 8 or 9 threads about Battlefront between the off-topic section on the main X-wing section.

That's because noobs hop in the game without ever trying out the vehicles in tutorial modes or off-line modes. Its not a flight-sim, but the controls are decent enough. If you want a flight sim there are a lot of games out there for you.

To be fair, the controls are rarely to be blamed here :P

I hope you can still fly bombers, they were my go to ships in space combat. I also hope it has space combat, but with more differentiation between maps, not just a different planet in the background.
