Garven + Esege ... + Calculation?

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Most folks when combining these two pilots seem to prefer R5-P9, which makes a deal of sense.

However, I just wanted to double-check something.

If Garven Dreis has R2-D6 and Esege is nearby with a Focus Token, this is how I'm seeing it go down.

Garven attacks, and has 3 eyeball results.

Garven uses Esege's pilot ability to use his Focus Token rather than his own to Calculate

Garven switches one Eyeball result to a Crit result

Garven has spent a Focus Token, and so passes it with his pilot ability (to Esege)

Garven uses Esege's pilot ability to use his Focus Token rather than his own to Focus.

Garven switches 2 Eyeball results to Hit results.

Garven has spent a Focus Token, and so passes it with his pilot ability (to Esege).

Considering they FAQ'd a Recon Specialist to allow someone to use Calculation and the traditional Focus effect on the same attack with two focus tokens, I am not seeing a flaw in this.

It doesn't interfere with the "Once per opportunity" clause, as you're not activating one ability twice, but are activating two abilities which just happen to both use Focus Tokens.

Just checking it out here first, before throwing out on the main forum :)

Also, pointing out that Esege can take a Recon Specialist, and Garven can potentially pass them to the Moldy Crow if desired...

I agree with your interpretation. If it is legal on a single attack to spend a focus on calculation and then a second token to modify any remaining eyeballs then there is nothing in either Garven's or Esege's abilitities that would prevent them from being used. Each token expenditure is its own opportunity for those abilities.

I don't actually see a lot of synergy with R5-P9 and these two pilots, at least not like there is with Moldy Crow Kyle and Garven. I guess Esege being around makes it more likely that a pilot that takes a focus action will make it to the end of their turn without spending needing to spend focus token from their action.

The "Deal of sense" is that "If Garven takes a Focus action, and Esege is nearby for combat, then that focus will be used exclusively for defense."

Based on the FAQ entry for Calculation, this seems to be a quite viable plan, as they've set a very clear precedent. But I'm still seeing it being a tricky number to pull off. Mind you, if you manage it, the look on the opponent's face would be priceless!

Legit

I also just noticed: Once Garven's done with the token, he could pass it back to esege.... for whom an on-board Jan Ors crew could turn it to an Evade.

Shenanigans!

Never mind, found it in the FAQ, where they call Garven's ability assigning.

So yes, Jan would trigger.
