Troll backswing on a miss

By StefvW, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey guys,

Backswing reads: ".... choose any number of figures affected by that attack. Each of those figures tests.. "

What happens when the attack is a miss ( X )? Can backswing still be used?

Looking at the rulebook, it seems that already at the beginning of an attack it gets determined who is affected, so that's before the dice are rolled. Following this, it seems backswing is valid since regardless of the miss there was/were hero(es) affected.

What do you think, does this makes sense?

Thanks!

RAW, that hero is still affected by the attack. However, I think it is worth submitting the question to FFG to see if that is an intended consequence, because it seems a little odd that an attack could miss and still stun 4 heroes. However, as I said, RAW it looks legitimate.

To me, since the attack is a miss, there's no affected figures, so no backswing

Thanks for your comments. Intuitively, this feels strange, but I agree that RAW it seems like backswing would apply. I'll indeed submit the question and see what they come back with...

Another one we had discussion on, again related to backswing but now in combination with Word of Misery (each time hero suffers any damage, also suffer 1 fatigue): if both the attack as well as the backswing do any damage, are these 2 separate damage-dealings and therefore would you get 2 times 1 fatigue? It doesn't say on the card that backswing is considered part of the attack, so my thinking would be yes

thanks again

I agree that intuitively it's a bit weird. However, this works after a miss, and that requires being targeted.

Backswing is explicitly immediately after the attack. It is a separate instance of damage dealing.

There are skills (check out the shadow walker for example) that specify "after you perform an attack which is not a miss. ) Perhaps Backswing is intended to have that, but it doesn't currently. Hence the question to FFG. Please post the answer when you get it.

Sometimes it helps seeing a situation on a role-playing point of view.

The missed attack that did not damage the hero(es) but still achieved a small cut/bruise"whatever to the hero(es). For this reason, heroes have to test against a condition (e.g. poison).

Official reaction from FFG and it's indeed as we thought:

Yes, backswing can still be used if the troll misses. Yes, the attack and backswing are considered 2 separate instances of dealing damaged for Word of Misery.

Thanks for playing!

Troll backswing is pretty awesome, and has moved trolls up significantly on my 'large monster' favorite list. I like it alot more than the 'Bash' skill they used to have :)

They're brutal, especially when there's a Frenzy and/or Word of Misery involved...
