A simple question for you all: what are your favorite uses for TIE Fighters outside of swarms? Are there any unique pilots who you particularly enjoy using?
Edited by Covered in WeaselsUsing TIE Fighters outside of a swarm
Dark Curse and Backstabber are my favorite TIE Pilots to use outside of a swarm. They're my "go-to" when I have points to fill in my Imperial squads - Dark Curse over Backstabber if I only have room for 1.
Dark Curse, especially with a Stealth Device, is bizarrely hard to kill (especially for two-ship lists) and can work as a great blocker and nuisance.

This. Backstabber if I need more offense, but DC otherwise. Scourge may see some play once the Gozanti drops and I sometimes use Mauler as a cheaper heavy hitter, but rarely.
I use em to block for Rexler he sits back at range while they close fast, so you either ignore three attacks in your rear or allow brath to snipe at will while you kill 12 point ties.
mini-swarm count? ![]()
otherwise echoing Dark Curse. The Tie Fighter and A-wing dials are actually not that far apart. Both can be incredibly infuriating blockers, but of the Ties only curse is durable enough to really be a bloody nuisance.
Beast works well too, but being limited to greens makes him harder to use.
I have a list with Vessery and a Scimitar for the TL. I was using Fel/Jax as my third, but decided to try some TIEs. Pulled out Curse and Backstabber...as people have said. People almost never shoot at curse, so he's great
To push down their throat with the bomber. I kind of want to free up a point, but BS is really nice as a 3-4 dice cheapo. I was considering night beast as I really like the idea of him: perhaps dive right in with next to curse with focus/evades.
I have outmaneuver on vessy.../so I like double flank threats, the TIE being much less threatening.
Can't wait to see the new TIEs.
Good suggestions! I remember my first games with just the ships contained in a starter box, and just how annoying it was to kill Dark Curse, but I haven't thought of bringing him since then. I will definitely try him out again in the future.
i like backstabber, I like to let him stay out of the shooting for the first round or two and then bring him up on their flanks/back.
Black squad with calculation I have been using as filler helps get some crits on all these Decimators
Black squadron with draw their fire is an obnoxiousl addition to a squad that leans on keeping 1 ship crit free. +1 for dark curse; the enemy's inability to hit him with focus, target lock etc enhanced attacks is great ability against rebels and scum that rely on things like fcs/gunner combos to make the most out of their attacks.
I use them as fillers. So, for example, you could build Deci decked out + a mini-Swarm of 3-4 TIE Fighter generics.
The TIE Fighters could be used for blocking or as secondary attackers.
I like having 2 academy's to use as simple blockers, together they can block most anything on that first assault which could be a game decider down the line
I make use of Beast from time to time, when I have room for only one. Free actions is always nice to have, and enables the beast to go wild on BR or tank with evade. Just don't force those greens every turn to not limit yourself.
DC of course shines almost every time when on the table.
You usually see TIE fighters as an escort to RAC or other Turret ships. They still have their use thanks to their dial and action selections.
Ties are the best, so iconic!!! Put ties where ever they fit, as they deserve a place in every list! Long live tie fighters!
Ties do make their way in to my lists, as others have said normally as an escort to a decimator.
I have been having some success with a black squadron with lone wolf, I started running him as a distraction on the flank to hopefully take some attention away from my heavier hitters, however he normally gets completely ignored till he kills a ship then due to focus and rerolls much my opponents chagrin refuses to die!
Never been disappointed with him yet.
I've used TIE fighters as fillers in two squads. In one squad, Commander Kenkirk is decked out to be defensive, so I added "Night Beast," "Dark Curse," and an Academy Pilot to get some more shots and to keep the theme of defense. It's actually been quite successful.
I also employed "Backstabber" in my TIE interceptor squad because I didn't have enough points for an Alpha Sq. Pilot, and "Backstabber's" PS 6 is really nice. He's like a TIE interceptor light. He supports Soontir Fel, Lt. Lorrir and a Saber Sq. Pilot with Opportunist.
Never had much luck with "Mauler Mithel," and "Howlrunner" is obviously best to use in a swarm. Although Hothie had some pretty good use out of her as a support ship for two Bounty Hunters in his Additional Damage squad.
Depends on what you mean by "outside of a swarm". Do you mean not with 7-8 and perhaps with Howlrunner? Because, there are a lot of ways to use Tie Fighters not flying in formation.
I've found an Omnicron with Fleet Officer and Dark Curse, Night Beast, Backstabber, and 2 Academies to be great. Throw out the 2 free Focus each turn and double your actions.
An academy is great to throw out there as a blocker. Black Squadron pilots can take things like Wingman. There are a ton of things you can do with Tie Fighters.
Night beast plus the new mk2 title will be a nice little action efficient ship.
The good(evil?)ol TIE fighter is still one of the best ships in the game.
Having an AP or two in your squad can do you no wrong.
