When I go to change my avatar pic all I get is a list of graphics by game type with pre-made ones... I am prob just blind, but for the life of me I can't find how to use a different image...

I don't think you can. I'm pretty sure you're limited to only the ones they have listed.

That said a lot of us have X-Wing ones, which apparently were removed for some unknown reason.

There are no custom avatars. People with seemingly unique ones have scoured the entire list. One catch though, some avatars seem to have been removed from the list. So if people had them before the removal, they will keep as their avatars.
