Specific Crit

By Scojo2, in X-Wing

We have upgrades and abilities that allow you to discard certain crit types, choose between them or ignore them outright, so my question is, how do you all feel about pilot abilities or upgrades that allow you to apply specific crits or specific crit types?

Maarek Stele is a start, but I'm more so thinking of things that might give console file, for example, or have you draw face up damage cards until the first pilot crit is pulled, apply it, then discard the others. It would mean lots of damage deck reshuffling, which might annoy some.

Disclaimer: I'm not advocating, just curious what everyone thinks about the idea.

The only aspect that concerns me is potential delay of game. So I'd want any such ability to have a limited scope. Other than that, go to town!

I didn't think about that. Good point

If you think about it, Bossk's pilot ability already does this - he can turn any crit he would deal into effectively a Direct Hit.

Edit: that's a little confusing. What I mean is that if a ship has shields, a crit normally has no special effect. With Bossk, that crit strips 2 shields. And if the ship doesn't have shields and you have Greedo, that crit becomes a direct hit AND another crit!

Man, Bossk looks like he will be terrifying.

If you want a pilot to cause damage like some specific face-up card was applied just make it part of his pilot ability.

Making a pilot that can quickly mill an entire damage deck is so meaningless on won hand but also so potentially abusive on the other if you believe that knowing what cards are still in a damage deck conveys a huge advantage to a player. If looking for a specific card what will happen if there are no copies of that card left in the DD? You may be more likely to find a specific type of card, pilot or ship, but that's still not a guarantee and I'd be wondering how is this pilot getting to be so specific.

Given the size of the critical hit deck I think the limited scope of critical hit modifies Marrek Stele, Determination, Lebo is enough. Now if we had a critical hit deck as large as the one in Armada then sure we could use a little more critical hit modification to shake the random odds into more favorable results. However it is still very much possible to run out of damage deck cards in a 100 point game without such abilities.

Now of course some people have suggested to add more damage cards to the deck but I think until they print a 2nd edition core (with an update kit for all the 1st edition core set that have been sold) there is no need to modify the damage deck in any way. If it were it will still have to find a way to keep the ration between pilot to ship traits as well as the ratio of direct hits to non-direct hits fairly the same.

Doesn't the rulebook say shuffle and place on the bottom? I'll have to check

Also, I see your point on specific crit cards, but what about the ability to draw until you get a pilot card? or draw until your first ship card?

If you run out of card in your damage deck you will take the discard pile and reshuffle it to create a 'new' damage deck. Of course this deck would have a slightly different composition as you can 'know' every card that goes into it which also means knowing that certain cards are "on the table" even when they are face-down and have never been revealed.

Looking for a Pilot or Ship card may not require milling as many cards but you'll still run the risk of running out especially if you are looking for pilot cards.
