How the best Dark Heresy games end.
The games not over until they use exterminatous!
One of the many things that I love about the 40K setting is that Exterminatus doesn't need to be the end of the campaign;it can just be the end of a story arc.
Well the whole party is dead. The Arbite claimed he didn't know how big the blast area would be.

Not his best idea to use a nuclear device
It wasn't a nuclear device. Planetary bombardment was strictly lasers, HE, and Kinetic strike weapons.
The captain was very clear with him when he gave him the device saying 'the lances would hit first followed by the macrocannons'. A macrocannon broadside from orbit from a cruiser class ship is pretty obscene. It's not intended for delicate work.

Did you allow them to burn fate?
What were they trying to kill with the orbital bombardment, other than themselves apparently?
No orbital bombardment is delicate work! Haha
They got into a fight with a demon prince. They killed the demon prince, but prior to that one of them called in the orbital bombardment. The demon prince would have come back obviously, but the party had the ability to deal with him.
I allow players to burn fate in situations that are actually survivable. Being at the center of an orbital bombardment and having to climb a staircase in the center of the blast was not something that I feel that they could survive. I may, at some point down the road, allow about 4 out of 5 of them to come back. The reasons for using the last resort were a little murky. One the PC's lead some guards to his partners house and they shot him as he came out the door. He felt intensely guilty and the demon played on that causing him to become depressed.

It can be the start of a story arc, too, or even a great kick-off event for an entire campaign!
Well it's a mix of two things. I ran out of material with the campaign book being over. I like to work out of pre-gen books to give myself an overall story, and the group seemed to have real life stuff every other week which killed off my interest. I gave them the last resort device at the start of the 7 episode 'final' season out of four seasons. One of them decided to use it. It was a potential ending. There were several potential endings. My new campaign is in Calixis, so events going on in Askelleon won't really matter.
If anything of that group ever comes back I may use the orbital bombardment event as part of why one Inquisitor fell from favor and why a rogue trader left the sector. I just don't think it is likely until we get another Dark Heresy Second Edition Campaign book. I'm also not putting that group back together.
