What flight sim to follow Xwing Alliance.

By gamblertuba, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Played Xwing and Tie Fighter back in the day. Loved me some wing Commander back then to. Just replayed XW Alliance. Now what? Any newer space flight sims that compare favorably? Would like story based missions but not essential.

There really isn't anything else out there that compares with Alliance. Custom missions and online play can go on forever though.

There is a slight resurgence in space sims.... but they're more in line with work-sims. Do jobs, mine resources, get money, buy bigger ship, repeat. But that doesn't sound like it fits your bill.

Maybe one to watch for the future is EVE: Valkyrie. Its not out yet, but it is not a work-sim like EVE: online is. It uses VR tech like the occulus rift, which is set to be released relatively soon (early 2016). Valkyrie is supposed to be a launch title. It looks gorgeous, but I can't help but imagine that content will be relatively short.

I had hoped for a next gen version of X-wing as it was a brilliant game.

I'll be looking forward to a Ep VII sim, hopefully they bring one out.

While not a "newer" game there is a space sim game called Tachyon: The Fringe that came out around the same time as X-Wing Alliance, and it is available on Steam. It has a mission-based structure where you have to choose between the "rebel" faction of independent frontiersmen or the large corporation seeking to control the fringe territories, though the moral lines are blurred enough to make it not a straightforward choice of good vs evil. The campaign is mission-based and story-driven, and the main character is voiced by Bruce Campbell.

I liked it a lot, it has some fun mechanics like being able to change the facing of your ship without changing your directional movement, so you can spin the ship around and blast enemies that were behind you while still continuing to move away from them.

Sadly EA is all about online modes now we are unlikely to get a mission based single player game.

I would find this hard to believe as even battlefield had single player. (yes battlefield not battlefront)

EA is gimmicky and if they are going to pull a fast one it'll be that it requires you to have an EA account and logged in just to play the **** thing single player or multiplayer.

Dangerous Elite is really nice. But dont expect a story there, more of exploration sandbox.

Why Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen but in SW universe can't happen? Is is such a hard thing to ask? Do the developers hate money? People would drop money in no time on such title.
