Epic's fighter problem

question!

is epic supposed to be competitive? is the base game just 100 because w.e and epic has always been equally balanced?

if no, just kick back and have fun.

Here's an interesting thing to ponder: What would you consider to be balanced? Lists with same points being of equal strength? That has almost never been the case, not in absolutes ( just think of naked HWKs).

So then what do you do? You play, you find what works, what doesn't. Maybe next time you try something better. Your opponents do the same. So you both have to play the game and improve your lists game to game! What isn't fun about that?

in a competitive setting, "balanced" means that a fair portion of the games options (in this case, ships including available upgrades) can take on the competition and emerge victorious. "Unbalanced" means that a certain game option or type thereof (such as PWTs, fat ships, swarms etc.) is dominating the competitive scene. The required variety to constitute a "balanced" game and the extent of how badly something is dominating is usually up to the individual. The more egregious, though, the easier it is to convince people (see phantoms).

what I'm trying to imply by the above post is "I don't believe FFG designed epic to be competitively balanced, so much so as a way to have fun with huge games of X-wing."

Honestly I think epic could be balanced. It's not totally screwed up. While I would say many of us have played a decent number of epic games, there isn't like a lot of documentation of competitive epic.

If I was going to try and balance epic this would be my suggestion:

1. 250 points. This reduces alpha strike damage and increases benefit of longer lasting pieces.

It also reduces set up clean up and play time. Making it probably possible to have decisive games in 90 minutes. And fully finished death matches with in 2 hours. This allows for tournaments!!!!!

2. 4x4 for 250. Or 4x5 for 300. A square map gives more room for maneuvering and even different theaters of combat. You have both more room to approach at your desired angle and more width to conduct flanks with. Also a little more space.

By default the 250 rule should make huge ships more competitive. Thus no need for any huge ship requirement restriction. If you want to play 250 fighters. I think you should.

For team epic I would drop to 300 pts 150 each!

I'm not sure I'd go to a competitive Epic event. I'm more into the casually-competitive. Casual is still competitive. I mean, I want to win, right? It's just not tournament competitive. I find I have more fun in a friendly game than at tournaments.
