Gaulus Sector

By RLogue177, in Game Masters

I am thinking of a new campaign I'd like to run. I'd like to center it in and around the Gaulus Sector. This is where Ryloth is. I want to flesh out the setting a bit while I'm cooking up some stories and plot hooks.

There is, obviously, a lot of information on Ryloth and twi'leks and the spice trade. But there isn't much available for the rest of the sector. It consists of eight major systems including Gaulus itself, Ryloth, and the Smuggler's Run. There are also two sentient species native to the sector, the Gaulians and the Wreans (and twi'leks, obviously).

Clicking through the links for the systems and planets located within the Gaulus Sector, the scant information means I can put in and create a lot of things wholesale. With what plot hooks I have in mind so far, I've been jotting down a few notes of different things to include in the sector, but I also want to brainstorm a bit with the community here for some other options. So I have a few questions that I'd like to hear ideas for.

Who are the Gaulians? What sort of species are these people?

Who are the Wreans? What sort of species are these people?

There was a Republic outpost in the Wrean system during the Clone War. What form did that take? What might still be there?

There is a Rebel communication base on Liintaar. Is it a staffed facility? An automated relay station?

The Smuggler's Run system is just a bunch of asteroids being used for various activities. The largest one, Skip 1, is the site of a decently sized spaceport with lots of casinos and cantinas. If you had something going on in the Run, what would it be?

Who are the Gaulians? What sort of species are these people?

Descendant from Kumumgah settlers, this off shot are akin to Sand People, just from mountains instead of deserts. Feral, almost non-sentient, they form raiding bands that attack other settlers (Twi'lek mostly) who formed colonies on Gaulus.

Who are the Wreans? What sort of species are these people?

Near-Human, most of them descendant Ruusanian settlers from the time Wrea was occupied by Brotherhood of Darkness operatives. preindustrial society focused on fishing and hydrophobic farming, famed in the sector for their alternative healing methods, similar to Bacta and Kolto.

There was a Republic outpost in the Wrean system during the Clone War. What form did that take? What might still be there?

Supply and shipping base, focused around the agriculture exports and the bacta/kolto replacements. Today is discreetly run by a Twi'lek clan, banished from Ryloth, using its facilities to ship spice.

There is a Rebel communication base on Liintaar. Is it a staffed facility? An automated relay station?

Staffed mostly by droids, with a few sentient overseers, it houses one of the largest Subspace Transceiver the rebels have in stock. Used mostly to supply operatives with a discreet and encrypted feed, similar to the holonet. to pass information and orders.

The Smuggler's Run system is just a bunch of asteroids being used for various activities. The largest one, Skip 1, is the site of a decently sized spaceport with lots of casinos and cantinas. If you had something going on in the Run, what would it be?

  • Covert mining operation (rare deposit)
  • Pirate base (staffed by droids/non-sentient laborers and the pirates are not present, most of them got caught or on a long haul)
  • Shadow-cantina (secret meetup place in a hollowed out rock for a syndicate cell)
  • Various space inhabiting oddities ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Vacuumbreather )

Very nice, Rusak! All very good and usable ideas.

I love the Gaulians you offered. Mountain People as an offshoot of Tattooine's Sand People. That's awesome, and I'm going to use it! I feel like they are more organized and less startly than their Tattooine cousins. I was planning to have Gaulus as the seat of the sector's Imperial presence. There are a few, scattered towns and stations where colonists live, and the Gaulian Mountain People continually harass these settlements when they feel bold enough. Imperial forces recently came in to quash a Rebel base on Gaulus, and units of stormtroopers are being garrisoned in the towns to root out further Rebel activities. The locals are actually thankful for their presence - for the moment anyway - because Gaulian raids have decreased.

I like the idea of Wreans being a descendant colony of Ruusanians and that the planet was once home to a Brotherhood of Darkness cell. I don't know much about that time period, so I'll have to do some reading. I also like your idea that Wreans are practitioners of alternative healing techniques and that they live a simpler life. Some good possibilities there.

The thought that the Republic outpost was more mundane than a military base is a good one. Twi'lek entrepreneurs have moved into the old facilities and are using them as a discreet base for exporting. I like that. However instead of spice, I think they are exporting the "bacta/kolto" stuff. They aren't cruel taskmasters and slavers, but they are definitely exploiting the Wreans to make a profit. Meanwhile, the place is starting to become known as an eclectic trading bazaar as other offworld merchants begin to move in. This is giving the twi'leks some mixed concerns. Whereas it opens the opportunity for more sales, they don't want to bring too much attention to their business and become "regulated."

The Rebel communication base is a small relay station mostly staffed by droids and overseen by a single sentient leader. Their job is to simply pass on information from operatives and cells. I like it. Their equipment is totally encrypted and mostly automated; they are not even privy to the information itself. The sub-space transceiver is one-of-a-kind and would be quite valuable on the market in itself. The person stationed there with the droids is a... unique personality... considering his company.

I like all of your Smuggler's Run hooks and will use them!

I applied a little graphic magic to the map from the Atlas. The systems Alarevi, Wxtm, Liintaar, and Miv-rah, I had to just kind of best guess their placements. I also put in the line for the Death Wind Corridor that leads from Ryloth up to Roon. This forms one edge of the infamous Spice Triangle.

I suppose I should bust out some graph paper and draw the sector out for greater detail for myself and my secrets, but I wanted to get down the placement of the systems. This will be the map graphic I hand out to the players, though.

I'm glad you like my ideas, I was just pooling details from the wiki about the sector and the mentions of the details.

Now that I see the distance from Arkanis sector, I am not sure if Tatooine was close enough for settlers. but bigger excuses can be made (some ancient routes were populated between the two stars, and Gaulus is the only remnant).

Nope, I think the mountain people offshoot of Tattooine's sand people is fantastic. The two worlds aren't really that far apart, astronomically speaking.

Then there's Miv'rah. There is nothing (that I can find) in the Wookieepedia about this system other than it is located in the Gaulus Sector. So, this is what I've created so far...

Miv'rah System

  • Miv'rah itself is a water world.
  • The "shallow ends" are over a thousand feet deep and the crust there is riddled with cave systems
  • There is a sentient, humanoid, aquatic species native to Miv'rah, and they live in the various cave systems; they are Stone Age hunter-gatherers. (They are totally aquatic, not amphibious.)
  • The poles are frozen and provide the only solid surface on the planet. These caps are frozen to the core of the planet such that they don't free float on the surface.
  • The world is teeming with aquatic life - among the countless fishes of all varieties and sizes are the XXXX, amphibious flyers that are always migrating, and XXXX, giant eel-like sea dragons.
  • There is a forest of tall and thick seaweed trees whose tips pierce the water's surface thousands of feet above. At various depths, sea creatures use the trees as spawning grounds.
  • The weather systems over the oceans are quite often stormy and turbulent, sometimes making air travel very difficult. The south pole is frequently buffeted by snow storms.
  • At the end of the Clone Wars, a group of Separatist military leaders decided to run instead of surrendering their fleet to the newly constituted Galactic Empire. They landed their starships on Miv'rah's south pole ice cap, where they were quickly buried by snow storms. The few officers and crew that remained (all the fleet's droids shut down) left the planet for other systems. Their plan was to lie in wait for the time when the people would rise up against the Empire.

The Wookieepedia has an article on a Sullustan criminal named Gaor Tembon. He's got a ship named Miv'rah Firestorm. He's from the WEG supplement "Wanted By Cracken." With that in mind, I'll say there is another world in the system much closer to the sun. It is a molten world, always on fire.

What other neat things might Miv'rah hold?

Alarevi is another system that has no information on it. I have not yet come up with any plans for it, and ideas would certainly be welcome.

The Wookieepedia makes mention of a drink named Alarevi Ale that was served in a bar on the first Death Star. Coincidence, or is it linked to the system of the same name?

Perhaps Alarevi is a fairly unattractive and inhospitable world where a large monastery can be found. The monks (not Force sensitive or anything like that) trade the ale for supplies and resources they cannot find on the world.

Considering the systems in the sector divide to S-17, S-18 and R-17 quadrants, you should consider pairing them in themes.

For example, Alarevi, Gaulus and Wrea are in S17. They should be considered fertile and inhabited systems.

Miv'rah and the rest (except Smuggler's run) from R-17, should be considered potentially inhospitable (Ryloth for example, as a harsh rocky planet).

I would make all the inscription you made as the planet Alarevi, the ale could have some elements that depict a watery planet or aquatic race.

I like the idea of making Miv'rah system fiery, its namesake the Miv'rah Firestorm.

Maybe its a gaseous system, this is why there is no information about ladnable planets ןמ the system (which are refereed to as stars, not planets). I like thinking that most uninhabitable planets, are a mining project waiting to happen, or any corporate operation looking for raw materials.
