Help me make my Big Game Hunter.. No wait, my Big Fish-Monger!

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I have this charactter idea. Well a few ideas actually... It started out with me picturing a Quarren with a harpoon and has developed fron there.

Basically I want an aquatic species character who is good at survival skills, but also trading and social skills. ...

Ideas:

1) Quarren Explorer: Trader+Big Game Hunter(or marauder?).. The harpoonist and traveling Fishmonger. He should have some kind of harpoon. Huntsman Vibrospear is good if marauder, but are there any Heavy Ranged that can work as a harpoon gun? He should have some skill with the harpoon as it is part of his background and upbringing and a big part of his previous life as a harpoon fisher(alien monster fish?).

2) Herglic Explorer: Trader+Big Game Hunter.. Big guy who left his planet to represent the family business, a fishing-, wildermess- and hunting gear-franchise, as a traveling salesman on the Outer Rim.

He is a good trader but not a good Big Game Hunter, but he wants to be and that is why he convinced his family and business to let him leave and work for them on his own on the edge.

He also has a harpoon, either for affectional value or for "demonstrating the goods", but he isn`t necessary skilled with it yet, so it doesn`t matter if it`s a vibrospear and he doesn`t have melee as a career skill.

- What do you think? Any ideas for better career or specializations for my idea? Any other species that fits?
I like herglic and quarren for how they look, whale and squid, but as a bonus one has 1 starting skill in charm, the other in negotiation.

- Do you have any ideas for what can work as an harpoon, other than the spear? A heavy ranged gun of some sort maybe? Net gun is interesting too.

Other gear I can look at and afford at character gen?

The first thing that comes to mind is using the stats for the Corellian Bow, tweaking it just a bit, and calling it a harpoon gun.

Cool! I see it has 1 hard point. Any suggestions for mods or add-ons?

Work with your GM, see if you can work out a way for it to be retractable. Also, since the bow has special ammo, work with them on that, too. Harpoon gun with a retractable line and ensare could be brutal.

Isn't there already a harpoon gun in Suns of Fortune?

You could also consider the Vibrotrident found on one of the NPCs in Force and Destiny.

Vibrotrident: (Melee, Damage +1, Critical 2, Range [Engaged], Defensive 2, Pierce 4, Vicious 3.)

Nice! I only have the FnD Beginner Box. Since it`s on an npc I guess you don`t know how many credits it is?

Given the price of other vibro-weapons, I'd put it right around 750-1000 credits.

Have you considered Nautolan (Force and Destiny Core) or the Aqualish (Dangerous Covenenats)?

Yes; the Styanax Lance, described on page 97.

I believe this fits what you're looking for.

Styanax Lance (Sons of Fortune)

Skill: Ranged (Heavy)

Damage: 8
Crit: 3
Range: Short
Encumbrance: 8
Hardpoints: 2
Cost: 200
Rarity: 8
Special: Cumbersome 4, Limited Ammo 1, Pierce 3, Vicious 1

Bio:

A large, vicious harpoon gun, the styanax lance has
been used by countless generations of stabmen to
hunt the ferocious sea serpents that haunt the stormy
Sea of Jarad on Tralus. Mounted at the bows of their
nagaks (the wide-hulled, oar-powered boats used by
the human and Selonian seafarers of Tralus), the styanax
lance is a meter-and-a-half long harpoon with a
sharp, barbed durasteel tip designed to penetrate the
armored scales and tough skin of the styanax. Thrown
by the strong arms of the stabmen, the lance is attached
to a stout flexisteel cable about two hundred
meters long, which the stabmen use to haul in their
prey. Rarely seen outside of Tralus, the styanax lance
is occasionally used by off-world big game hunters on
safari to bring down particularly large beasts, such as
giant gundarks or bull rancors.

Oh ****; that's awesome.

OP, you should definitely make a Nautolan with a trident named Paz Ideen

I did think about Nautolon, but not a fan of how they look, not as something I would play myself that is. Aqualish are cool, thank you

Haha :P

I am starting to lean towards the Herglic Trader/BGH, but he is getting more of a Ahab/Moby **** vibe, but more as a young trader. His grandfathers trading ship was eaten by a spacemonster, so now he is obsessed with finding the monster and killing it.

If I go this way I`m not sure if a harpoon would make much sense anymore. Spending 40 xp to get 4 Brawn to use the Styanax Lance(cumbersome 4) is quite a bit for a Trader/BGH-type too, when I could use it on skills....

Buuut, a huge harpoon would look so cool and iconic on this big whale guy.. Hmm... I guess the trading ships could have sold fishing gear from the Herglic homeworld and that`s why he has it... Rifle is also cool but..

* Edit: I kept the Lance and redused Brawn back to 4. I can still use it, but the difficulty is one rank higher. Not too bad when this weapon only shoots short range and I get why it would be hard to use it engaged.

Is it a gun or is it thrown? The skill(ranged heavy) suggests it`s shot by a gun you hold with two hands, and thrown might be a figure of speach(?).. Throwing a weapon with two arms seems clumsy, so thrown would be ranged light, right?

A whale-man using a harpoon is hilarious (to me, at least).

Some thrown weapons apparently use Ranged (Heavy). Perhaps the balance of the weapon requires both hands until the final moment of the throw (where one hand drops away early in the throw allowing the other to provide the power).
