Vassal Armada Tournament

By MattShadowlord, in Star Wars: Armada

So I messed around with the interface a bit. Seems okay. Though is it just me or does vassal seem like a tool that requires multiple monitors?

Also, how can you rotate ships in smaller increments during deployment? And is there a way to have them snap to the maneuver tool at the correct speed?

Finer rotation currently implemented in v 2.0

Snapping to the tool in progress... will be part of 2.0

Terrific! And thanks again.

In that case it is probably worth waiting for 2.0 to do a tournament.

BTW I have a lot on and probably shouldn't organise another tournament myself, so if anyone is interested in stepping up as a TO please feel free.

I'm in.

Will this page be where matches are organised or shall I also subscribe through some other tools?

I also noticed the front shield 'bug' on the MK-II but it's been noted already I see.

@ransburger: thank you so much for this killer tool. Appreciate lots.

I suppose I could organize the thing if no one else wants to step up and take a crack at it.

Will have to check out the Armada module (done a lot of Vassal X-Wing-ing), but shouldn't be too hard to use ;-) I would like to participate if possible, it depends on different factors though (I'm located in Europe, there might be difficulties to get a game going if most of the others are in US timezone)

Guys, is there a sort of community were gamers can arrange random "friendly matches"?

I guess a forum or even just a chatroom could make the deal.

I'm finding hard to find people to play against (locally especially but also on Vassal); I would especially like to find Vassal opponents since I believe it is a tremendous tool to analyse tactics and different possibilities within and before a game.

Well, not exactly, but we can certainly start one.

How about we all post what times / days of the week we are free, and then you can message people to arrange a game.

For example, I am free on Mondays and Wednesdays all day, and Tuesdays in the afternoon. Sometimes I am free on Weekends.

Good idea. I'm potentially free in the late evenings, Pacific Standard Time, M-Th. Ideally after 9 or 10pm. (I know, not great for the rest of the continent!). Possibly weekend mornings if we finish before 10am (better for the rest of the continent)....

Yes, I don't get much time to play. :(

BiggsIRL, I will see what my schedule looks like this next few weeks and we can work on something

Thankfully I live in Oregon so I can work with your time table.

Sounds good. Just a heads up, my Wednesday this week (tomorrow) is shot during the day. Got called in to work.

Double postin': I am going to start a new thread for actual organization of the Vassal Tournament.

Edit: Use this thread for discussion and when people are free.

i'm usually open mon-thurs around 8-9 PM Central time USA and can stay up till 11-12ish if need be. This is for the next two weeks before college starts, when ironically, I will have more open time. Feel free to PM me to set up a game time.

Hi All, Noob question but is there a guide for setting up Vassal? I've installed/activated the Mod it's the next bit that I'm not sure about having not used it. Do people just sit in the main room waiting for an opponent or organise in advance? When do you put in your army list etc?

BiggsIRL, can you please report in this thread a link to the new one relating the organisation of the Vassal Tournament when you create it?

Thank you.

I think that using a forum to state when one can be available would become messy (especially if we are more than 10, if people go beyond phrases as long as "Available Wed 13th 20:00->23:00" and especially if people add several posts to update formerly-declared availabilities).

My proposals:

A) Doodle poll: anyone can insert his availabilities on a chart (that a few of us will have to update --> add further time slots as we go forth in time); then people willing to play in a given time-slot can reach out to those whom gave their availability for it. I created a test-doodle-poll so that we can see if this option could be workable:

--------------> http://doodle.com/wkgb7iuuetaiyczw

--------------> please notice that that time slots are indicated in UTC (universal time) so that we do not have to convert one another's time in ours (I think we span at least 2 EU + 4 US timezones); if you are not familiar with UTC please refer to: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx

B) Hangouts chat: if our Armada-Vassal community is not greater than 10-15 people this could be a very convenient tool: I write when I would like to play and all those that read the message decide if they want to "set an appointment". Should I feel harassed by notifications (e.g.: a day I know I won't be able find the time to play) I would be able to mute that chat's notifications for some time.

--------------> I will create a chat anyway; those of you interested in this option please provide me their @gmail address.

EDIT:------> WhatsApp could be another tool to create a group to find opponents (a gmail @ would not be necessary); I personally prefer Hangouts though.

Well, it looks like I have an actual deadline to try to get v2.0 out... :)

Can anyone familiar with Armada on Vassal estimate how long 6 turn 300 point games are usually taking? Time is my biggest concern about comitting, and I've found X-WIng took a lot longer to play in Vassal vs real life.

I need to get some Vassal games in. Thankfully I have tomorrow off. I think I will practice it tonight.

Sadly it does not replace the experience of on the board feel

well it varies a lot, a good rule though is that vassal will probably add 20-30 minutes to your game so 2 hrs and 30 minutes or so. I have been able to complete all of my games in 2ish hours

A game against one of my regular opponents on Vassal (eg Doobleg) probably takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on how much trash we're talking.

I did have a game where my opponent took so long to think about each token he spent it was a bit agonising - I mean easily 5 minutes to respond after each attack. I'm quite patient, but in real life I'd have politely prompted, then prodded then poked him by then :D

Fortunately that is the exception to the rule and most people motor along quite quickly, but it's worth keeping in mind when playing vassal newbies that they might need to be reminded the game isn't play by email :D

Play by email?

Until a community-tool whatsoever does not kick off, should anyone be up for Vassal games "in European working/playing hours" (I may ask to break them in halves of 1,5h max each) please feel free to contact me; I'm also on hangouts: alby1kenobyATgmailDOTcom.
