GenCon - Rescue at Glare Peak

By gribble, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Evidently, players in the official FFG games at GenCon were given copies of Rescue at Glare Peak. Just checking if anyone there picked up a second copy or otherwise doesn't want the copy they were given and would be willing to part with it for the benefit of a foreigner? I'd be happy to compensate you reasonably...

:)

To be honest, unless you're a real completionist, you're not missing much.

It's not as good as FFG's best like Jewel of Yavin or Long Arm of the Hutt. It feels like one of the by-the-numbers WEG rebel adventures to be honest.

And it cops out of the confrontation with Vader - they probably had no choice really, but it still feels like a missed opportunity and a failure of nerve.

Regrettably, I *am* a real completionist, but thanks for trying to make me feel better about missing out!

When your clever players ****** the warheads off of a few proton torpedoes from that downed Y-wing and attempt to set a demo charge to kill the Sith Lord, you do kinda wish that scene could play out...

My players didn't go that far, but they did use the proton torpedoes to scuttle the downed fighter and make one hell of a distraction for the Imperials.

Meh, Vader's long dead in our game anyway... And I know they won't let the PCs fight him, so it just seems silly even involving him. It's an RPG, and if it has stats, the PCs will find a way to kill it...

Anyway...Gribble, I feel your pain. I personally hate 'exclusives' for conventions or Kickstarters or anything.

I want to see gaming products in the hands of gamers. The only people helped by 'exclusives' are Ebay scalpers.

If you really wanted to play out the arrival, replace Vader with an Inquisitor from Force and Destiny. It'll most likely result in a defeat for the party, but you'll have the stats to play it out.

If nobody ends up being able to help you here, your best bet is probably going to be to set up a saved search on eBay for it. I know there was a seller that was selling them for a few months. Tends to get mighty expensive though (I think most went for $70-$100 each).

There's always the (somewhat dwindling) hope that they'll put it up as a PDF download at some point also.

FFG can't offer PDFs of Star Wars products that they sell. Rescue was sold to stores for Rebellion Day demos, so they may not be able to ever offer it in PDF.

Wasn't the previous EotE "Free RPG Day" adventure also sold to stores? That has been released as a PDF download.

That's what I was thinking gribble, but maybe the free rpg day game was free to stores? I don't know.

The Edge free adventure was included in a Free RPG Day. It was a free product from FFG that was basically donated.

Stores had to pay for Free RPG Day bundles in order to have the adventure and everything else that was given away that year shipped to their location. This is to offset Free RPG Day costs, not the publishing companies costs.

Money may have changed hands, but it wan't going to FFG. Thus is was a Free product as far as the licensing agreement goes.

But the AoR adventure was not? Despite working in a similar manner? Was it a FFG specific thing?

So the lead developer was running the adventure at GenCon. I had played in it for Rebellion Day last year, however my GM highly modified it and cut off the first 2/3 or so, only doing the prison break part. So after the game I asked him a bit about Vader.

He said the idea was they wanted to give the players a sense of urgency, but also wanted there to be a satisfying way for it to end when time was up. Saying that Vader arrives and cuts everyone in half with his lightsaber, they figured most players would say that would be a pretty cool way to go out and not feel like they would have been able to actually overcome the thing causing the abrupt ending of the adventure.

Also, this is not a convention exclusive. While not widely available, it was something stores could have run back in October.

FFG sold it directly to stores. I can't remember an exact cost, but I very vaguely recall seeing one for the order/application page for retailers.

And it was specifically as a promotional event for AoR. Not as part of normal Free RPG Day like Shadows of/Under a Black Sun.

Makes sense.
