Mist of Bilehall

By rugal, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I must say I'm really disapointed. This new expansion is far from what I was hoping :

- no heroes, no class

- a one act campaign (no act 2? what does it means ?)

- no overlord class

- nothing really new

It's more like a monster and campaign expansion box with nothing more to go with ...

On top of that, the undead theme is not my cup of tea personnally. I was more hoping about werewolves or Uthuk or something like that.

If heroes may not be really needed since H&M and other expansions offers many (but never enough to me), it's clearly in need of hero classes (at least one healer and one mage) and another class for the overlord like the raven one,

I'm gonna buy it anyway since I need all of it, and monsters are always good addition, but for the first time, I'm not expecting it like a child. I hope next expansions are not going to be like this one, because if it is, maybe campaign books are enough

Well, I expecting it like a child, to tell the truth. But I too think it could bring new classes and new heroes. Anyway, it will be gladly welcome.

Am I the only one to think it's deceiving ?

I wouldn't call it deceiving, but I'm a bit disappointed too. New monsters are cool, but its not like they are offering more monsters than an H&M pack offers.

More lieutenants are cool too, but if there are no rumor cards, they only way they are going to be seen (if you're not playing the bilehall campaign) is if you use a single one of them as an plot deck Agent.

And like you said I also would like to have seen some extra overlord deck and hero classes.

I agree we still need a Healer and Mage class to have 6 options for each class. Also, I'm gonna buy it cos I bought everything so far.

However in my opinion; they could have made a seperate "Hero" and Monster pack for it and make another Campaign Book of it.

Lieutenants can be seen as plot decks

But plot decks have the same problems as heroes : since it's only one per campaign, having all of them is useless and since it's not usable in mini-campaigns.

So, it's like a H&M box without H and some cards and a small campaign. Not sure to see the point right here ...

looks like I will do next expansion myself :(

Too be honest, we still don't have a clear view on what the campaign will be like. They call it (if I remember correctly) 'A full, one act campaign'.

Why call it a full campaign if it would be shorter than a mini campaign? So the one act might just mean its +-10 quests all in the same act, instead of divided over 2 acts? But that seems really weird.

Me wants more magic users, too!

I am looking forward to the expansion and the Lieutenants.

Won't it be cool to add vampire Lieutenants to fight along side Lady Eliza Farrow and help her take the kingdom of saradyn!

I too do like at least 2 of the three lieutenants as plot deck (but need to see more to be sure they are better than previous plot decks)

but the matter is more about Mist of Bilehall which looks like a strange and deceiving expansion for the time being

Wow, I was just thinking about, and ...

maybe the next expansion will be a full hero one : with only heroes, classes, and campaign ? Sounds like weird though ...

It feels like and expansion to calm people down so they would not say the game is slowly ending. It looks like a more complex version of H&M Collection with new tiles.

I mean... haven't all of the small boxes just been "complex H&M packs" with tiles, quests, a story, and some shop cards? I don't see how this is different except having more stuff for the OL and less stuff for the heroes.

Maybe they are lacking of ideas ?

Or maybe it's to please people like Beren says ?

Only thing is sure : if thoses expansions continue to come, it will break the small balance of the game if adding only to one side and not the other.

I prefer H&M boxes than this one, or campaign books from so far. I will say more when I will have the box, but the game deserves better than that to my opinion.

Admittingly, I am on the fence about this expansion. I won't reserve final judgement on it until it actually comes out, but I must say that for a box expansion, it does seem to be lacking in comparison with other boxed sets. The lack of hero classes sorta just makes this a "special" campaign, in which all the components provided are really solely provided just for going through it alone. The lieutenants as well, who will only have ACTI or II Cards, so either they'll be weak and you can never epic play them, or you'll never see them appear in Act I.

I also... and this is just my opinion.... don't think the OL needs anymore benefits. The introduction of Plot Cards and OL Rewards has made him plenty powerful enough as it is and when you take into account some of the quests out there that are OL favored, quite frankly sometimes I think he's too hard to defeat. That being said, with an idea like "Taint", I'm not sure why or how it didn't cross the minds of the developers that it could be an ability gained from an OL reward. That's what rumors are for.

Like I said, I'm reserving judgement, but as of right now, it's not high on my list of things to get. I think I'd rather go for Heirs of Blood and some H&Ms.

I'll gladly buy it, however I was also thinking about something more like the other expansions. Anyway, let's wait and see. H&M collections, in another hand, are at the bottom of my list.

Well that explains why I couldn't find the act 2 two cards for the lieutenants, as at first I actually thought they were missing. But the lieutenant packs for all three do have act 1 and 2 cards. Strangely the monster cards from this expansion did have act 2 cards so wondering why not for the lieutenants. The rule books states another expansion will come out later this year that will has a connection to this one so wonder if the act 2 lieutenant card will be in that expansion. I don't mind that this expansion is a little light but the price should match, so I agree with rugal. Price should be had been lowered or add in more content.

The reason that the monsters have Act II version is that you can use them in other playthroughs, the same goes for the agent cards on the plot decks. They didn't include the Act II versions for the lieutenant because they aren't used in MoB, but it is 99,9999999% sure that these lieutenants will reappear in the next expansion.

I agree it is likely we'll see Act 2 cards for these lieutenants in "Chains that Rust" since the paragraph in the "Bilehall" rulebook makes it sound like the stories are linked. I don't know of any lieutenants in previous campaigns who have appeared in the first act and then been completely absent from the second. However, "Mists" and "Chains" are clearly a new type of expansion, and there's nothing prohibiting FFG from having a different kind of story. The plot decks have Act 2 agents for these three, which is a good sign.

I'm intrigued by this expansion but it feels a little "incomplete". I think I might wait until the Chains That Rust is released, and if it gets good reviews, I'll pick them both up.

I think for me, while I'm still waiting for this to arrive, is disappointment that unlike other small box expansions, this one doesn't have Rumor cards for the quests - so the only way to play them is in the mini-campaign.

While there are no rumor cards, it's not exactly a mini campaign- it's 5 Act 1 quests starting from 1XP, rather than 3 Act 1 quests and an Act 2 starting from 3 XP. Additionally, it sounds like the story can be continued/combined with the Chains that Rust campaign, judging by the note in the quest guide.

The other thing to note is that there are no Act 2 quests in Mists of Bilehall. Therefore, even if you had an Act 1 rumor, there would be no corresponding Act 2 advanced quest card. The expansion isn't set up to fully support the rumor quest mechanic (my only point here is that it doesn't seem they decided arbitrarily not to make cards- the campaign format actually doesn't lend itself to rumor play due to being entirely Act 1, saying nothing about the Tainted cards.)

Maybe, just maybe, the rumour cards will be included in the Chains that rust expansion.

While FFG has broken this trend once (with Dark Elements), they do not typically include components in one expansion which require another. "Chains" would have a similar problem to "Mists", assuming it follows the same format. If it is a one-act campaign, any included rumor cards would still be missing a corresponding quest from the other Act.

When you look at the story of MoB and tainted mechanic I guess it stands to reason that we didn't get rumor cards Even though it sucks a bit.

On another note: is it just me or did the quality of minis actually improve with this expansion? Maybe it happened with some H&M pack (I don't have any of those yet, but I'll be getting two of those next week) but as far as I can tell it's different plastic then usual and boy, did the level of detail go up! Bone horrors are just wickedly awesome!
